  • Why Are We Committing Suicide?

More Americans are committing suicide than are dying in car accidents.

In fact, I was just reading an article that mentioned the increase in the suicide rate and also how Americans are reporting an increase in stress.  Here is the link:  Link
Why do you think we are committing suicide?

  • Don’t kill yourself Dan.

  • More pressure from society, I guess. People have different reasons for suicide.

  • I don’t know what motivates people to kill themselves.  Probably an imbalance of chemicals in the brain for one reason or another.

I do know, however, that this world is a very very crazy… messed up place (largely thanks to humans).  That list is long and distinguished…

  • Having considered it before myself, I can imagine there are as many reasons as there are people doing it.

Also, reddit.com/r/suicidewatch is a good resource if you find yourself having such thoughts.

  • Nobody told me we were killing ourselves. What day is it supposed to happen? What are we wearing?

  • @Erika_Steele - CFM Heels and nothing else.

  • there are lots of reasons:

People are used to instant gratification and don’t feel compelled to work as hard.  If something doesn’t work out, people get frustrated and quit.
Economic times are tough.  Poverty.  Debt.
    Physical or emotional abuse.
Lots of trauma going on in the world and people might think, “what’s the point? we’re all going to die sometime?”
They’re severely depressed and don’t seek treatment.
They’re psychotic.  Auditory command hallucinations telling them to kill themselves.
    Substance abuse, accidental overdose.
    They’re impulsive.
They’ve got a terminal illness and don’t want to be in pain anymore.

  • Poverty and isolation and drugs.  I do these funerals all the time.

  • Why is suicide one of the leading causes of death for veterans?

  • Because instead of helping each other out, we wait for the new iPhone.

  • Because they want to. Simple as that.

  • When I think about my friend Tyler who committed suicide in Jan., I struggle with so many emotions. I miss him and I am sad. I see the pain he causes his family by being gone and I’m mad. He had everything going for him, and yet the only thing that calms me is knowing that he was so mentally ill that he couldn’t see how good life was for him. I spent time with his family this weekend, and I hate seeing them suffer. I don’t know why people commit suicide. It truly is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. And no matter the pain you’re in, if you commit suicide, you cause a lifetime of pain for your loved ones.

  • Uh… this is actually less to do with suicide rates going up  and more to do with car accident fatalities going down.
Suicide rates in the US are actually pretty stable even if they did increase slightly (and still less so than most countries) during the recession.

Oh and I full support a persons decision to commit suicide so it doesn’t matter why. Their life, their reality, it isn’t any of our business what they choose to do with it (as long as they don’t take anyone else with them in the process).

  • I don”t know but it is sad.

  • why not? some people are unneeded, unwanted and unnecessary. wouldn’t it be better if we creeps just killed ourselves instead of making trouble for everyone else through our continued existence?

  • I think the main reason is we are often so secluded from the rest of society that when we do need help, there’s none offered. In other countries, people are able to rely on their community more so their troubles do not magnify. I also notice that Americans frown on “airing dirty laundry” while many other cultures, it’s ok to discuss one’s trouble in public.

  • It could be linked to a decrease in meaningful person to person interactions as the use of technological communication has increased, minimizing the release of the domino effect pf “healthy brain” chemicals that are released durnig ‘real life’ interactions.

  • I think some people lose hope. Having hope in life is a very powerful motivator. Like a couple people above said, maybe they just feel there is no hope for them in their current family/job/relationship/school and they just buckle under the pressure and decide life is not worth living. Suicide is the saddest thing ever as it means there was someone who just felt their life wasn’t worth it. Every life is worth something in my opinion. Everyone has something to offer the world even if the world has nothing to offer them in return.

If anyone, ANYONE out there clicked on theo’s post to see what people had to say about something you are considering, call this number: 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-784-2433. That is the National Suicide hotline.

  • depression, lack of faith and support system…i guess.

  • Because parents don’t beat their kids when they misbehave.

  • There are likely a number of reasons many of which were already stated in comments before this one, chemical imbalances to living in a society that has become more *me* oriented.

There are probably some who blame our government because after all, if there were no seat belt and airbag laws death by car accident would again overtake death by suicide.

  • @ellechristina – Emotional Support, there is no APP for that.

  • Because it’s easier with a gun.

  • Rightwing policies that have oppressed the poor, women, and minorities. I wouldn’t even call it suicide. I’d call it genocide committed by the GOP.

  • personally, from a college student’s POV and friend from a suicidal teen, it is totally the stress. It the fact and overwhelming feeling that we are wating our (and our parent’s) money doing something that won’t garentee just a job after we finish school, and even if it does, how long until we are out of debt? Waht if we fuck up and then our life is shit?
then there are the smaller things: papers to write, jobs to keep, relationships, assignements tht take forever, price of gas or of books or the amount of time left to do a million and one things.

Pressures from parents, from friends and family and society.
its a million and one things that can cause someone to try or to commit suicide.
i guess though it all comes back to the thought that nothing could get any worse and it won’t get any better so the only way out of the hellhole called life is to just end it. people might miss me, people might not, but at least i don’t have to feel this terrible, this awful and gross.

  • Because they make a choice that waking up every morning is far worse than never waking up again.

  • Lost touch with reality?  Poor priorities?  Decline in face-to-face contact?

  • Good and nice post………

  • I don’t know. Many reasons. I’m sure in some percentage of them the horrors of war certainly don’t help.

  • Life get’s that bad sometimes. Life isn’t fair and some people just don’t like dealing with it. I really think with high population counts and what the world is really coming to, pressure needs to be taken off of people to stay amongst the living.

  • It’s the Plant’s… Just ask Mark and Zoe… They’ll tell you.

  • @TrueBritt - That is so true, they are mentally bogged down, that they believe everything that isn’t true like they’re worthless when they are NOT, they believe they are unloved when they ARE. I’ve seen what suicide causes to :( its sad and its a loss of life but I believe you hit a point they are mentally ill and don’t know the truth that they are special/ important and etc.

  • I DONT AGREE AT ALL WITH LIVE AND LET LIVE…….. BUT LIVE AND LET DIE………………. MOST PEOPLE GO MENTAL AND KILL THEMSELF. I GUESS STRESS CAN MAKE U CRAZY. HOWEVER KILLING YOURSELF CANNOT B UNDONE AND IF DONE CORRECTLY CAN BE PAINLESS AND I CAN TAKE OR LEAVE IT IF I SHOULD.OR IF I PLEASE……………WE ALL DIE ANYWAYS. KILLING YOURSELF IS LIKE FOLDING IN POKER……….. WHY RAISE IF EVERYONE AT THE TABLE KNOWS YOU DONT HAVE A PLAY. THE LOSING CARD YOU END UP PLAYING ANYWAY. IF YOURE GONNA DIE SLOWLY….WHY NOT KILL YOURSELF TO END THE SLOW PAIN…. NO ONE LIVES FOREVER………..RIGHT? IF YOU CANT AFFORD THE RIGHT CORRECT PAINLESS WAY WITH A DOCTOR GO OUT INTO YOUR COMMUNITY AND STEAL SOMETHING OVER 200 THOUSAND DOLLARS AND INTENTIONALY GET CAUGHT……I WOULD SUGGEST ARMED ROBBERY OR GTA…… DONT HURT OTHERS WHEN DOING THIS OR THE POLICE. BE NICE. PLEAD GUILTY AND THE STATE WILL DO IT FOR U IN ABOUT 6 TO 9 MONTHS. THE STATES AND THE LAW WILL DO IT FOR U……..YEP……..

    ISNT THAT NICE……

  • Suicide as I see it, has little to do with stress. Mostly it comes from a lack of an inner vision of who you are and if you have a focus in your life. Its this emptiness, not seeing a future or a mission in life, which grings people to end it

  • Because they realize (or feel like) no one wants them.
Except for those who take 120$ an hour to tell them what stupid cell systems they are, and those who get a plus on the CV for working at a suicide line, and awkwardly talking to complete strangers.

  • @SKANLYN - Glad to hear you are delighted to pay for Obamacare and the national debt. Why don’t you pay my share, too?

  • The stuff I see in the news mostly seems to be teenagers who were cyber-bullied, though what the news chooses to report on probably isn’t representative of what’s actually going on. I would think if more people are stressed out and that’s linked to increased suicide, it’s probably because of the financial crisis. So many people struggling to make ends meet who just aren’t able to.

  • Reading comments on Xanga.

  • We’re not all that bad. Should see the rate in Japan. What I would like to know is why are we hurting others?

  • Because it’s instinctual. Animals do it, too, when their instinct is telling them things are too difficult to be able to die. It’s a way of taking control of your life.

This is why I’m convinced everyone in the world should try acid at least once. I’m not kidding. I probably would have killed myself by now if it weren’t for my psychedelic experiences. Now trying to figure this life out is almost fun.

  • I guess they get up in the morning and decide that death would be better then the life they are living

    I don’t know

  • People just handle the stresses of life, which I find hard to believe but I must have it easy too.  IDK.

  • I blame the fearmongering Liberal Democrats. Who wants to live in the world they are trying to create? Just another dystopian future in the making. Be better if the apes took over. Hail Caesar and Company.

  • @DenimPants - The suicide rates in Japan and South Korea are tragic. Honor plays a big factor in it. If unsuccessful in life, love, work, sheer loneliness, they will take a dive from a bridge or get lost in the woods and hang themselves. Very sad.

  • @winniezpoo - That’s the precise attitude that makes young people kill themselves. They’re born into a cold, selfish world where people like you would rather have them die hungry in the streets with no access to healthcare rather than pay an extra nickel in taxes. If it were up to your ilk the only thing we’d be spending tax payer dollars on is invading and occupying oil rich nations. You’re pathetic.

  • It’s Obama’s version of “hope and change” working itself out in the market place.

  • The suicide rate is higher than the homicide rate. I think one big problem is how stigmatized mental health care is. psychologist = shrink / medication for psychological problems = just a big conspiracy by the pharmaceutical industry.

  • because they don’t see any hope.

  • The article that you linked was interesting up until it started blaming the suicides on the government. What does the government have to do with suicides? There are so many things wrong with the article I don’t even know where to begin. It’s just ridiculous.

The article aside, I think suicide are a sad but natural part of life. There are many forms of life that “commit suicide” and though it’s sad, we also shouldn’t be so overly concerned about our own feelings of horror and sadness about the subject as to prevent someone else from passing on.

  • What an attitude! I have paid my way my entire adult life. I have paid taxes on multiple homes, house people that needed help, counseled people that needed help and taught people for 26 years to help them. How you dare how to say this to me when you don’t even know me is nd my comprehension. You say ilk and I say your a different ilk than I am. I have actually done the job. You are only talking about it.

  • It’s a harder society to live in. There are so many social stigmas nowadays. The media doesn’t help either. Just so many places were a life can go wrong. The “perfection” that is shoved down our throats every day via the internet, TV, and magazines. It’s just hard not to listen. Not to mention that most kids are growing to be bullies.

  • People are unhappy and therefore are committing suicide… still considering the obesity which there is ruling.

  • My guess is that it’s one sociopath with a vendetta and his angst-ridden girlfriend. Oh, wait, that’s the plot to The Heathers.

  • People in the United States don’t understand that suicide rates are a direct reflection from depression. My close friend from High School, Jessica took her own life a few years ago, so I have a better understanding. If people in the United states are depressed and don’t know how to handle it, then they will commit suicide. Jessica took her own life, so she must have been depressed. So people need to address their problems with depression, unlike Jessica did, so we have a decreeing suicide rate.

  • I’m so sorrry for your loss Bloggger 345. I think the point at which you are attempting to reach is that people in United are depressed and suicide is a result. I agree. If people in the United States are depressed and can’t handle it, then they will commit suicide. People take their own lives in this country, therefore people are depressed in our country. Suicide is not the main problem, it’s the depression that’s taking a toll on our country.

  • Because suicide isn’t as much as a taboo as it used to be. People are a little bit more accepting of it and honestly I think that’s good, versus making people live in hell their whole lives.

  • Financial difficulties, I guess. If that’s the case, why am I still here?

  • Twinkies are gone, twinkies are back, twinkies are gone again. Who amongst us could possibly handle such a roller coaster of emotions???

  • Well it’s hard for me to believe anything the article says since it turns pretty quickly from an article about suicide rates to a ridiculous Obama-bashing rant.

Also, to answer your question truthfully – the world is, in addition to being a beautiful, mysterious, magical, complex and amazing place, also a disgusting, horrid, degrading, oppressive, horrifying, confusing place where we are all going to die?
Anyone with half a brain thinks enough to have moments of existential crisis.
    Just my two cents.

  • We need Jesus…to give our spirits a little lift…we are to centered on the cult of eternal youth and money….both are fleeting…and way to focused on being celeberities.

  • I’m certainly not in the mood to commit suicide, nor do I have the desire to. I have zero sympathy for those who attempt and or go through with it. In my opinion, it’s a selfish act, with no regards to those left behind. Who by the way, I do have sympathy for. Stress in the work place? Sure. But that’s just a part of life. Something I can deal with. And when I do, it  makes me a better person for when I have to deal with worse, or more stress.

  • Lack of mental healthcare, and a stigma perpetuated by people who post images like this one. Well done, Dan. You are the problem.

  • @armnatmom - i feel sorry for you.  it must suck to go through life without the ability to feel empathy.

  • I certainly hope some of these comments are a perverted attempt at humor because many of them are cold and lacking in compassion. The human personality is increasingly being understood as in part being a pattern of chemical imbalances. Just a few years after high school, and near the end of the Vietnam War, my father committed suicide. He fell into such a dark pattern he began blaming himself for all the issues of our family. His depression hit as medical science was just starting to understand mood control with medications. Being a vet he had consistent care but was shifted between medications so quickly we often wondered were these genuine emotions or the medications? Years later as one of my brothers dealt with depression I learned that it can take weeks to months to see if a medication is effective. If it is  not withdrawal and starting another med can take months. If  my father’s issues had happened only fifteen years later it could have had a very different outcome. It took years to come to the full realization that the members of the family did not cause his downfall. There were large loads of guilt and mystery which were carried by his family for years. A major lesson from this period was often people’s issues will happen whether I am a part of their life or not. Often they are part of a pattern which have developing for years.

  • Could be so many different reasons. I won’t get too much into detail because that isn’t the point, but sometimes I just stop seeing the point. It’s depressing to think that I’ve been spending money and going into debt to go out in the big, wide (really messed up) world and compete for jobs and then stay at said job for however many years, forever getting up and working the same hours. I try to think about positive things – family, friends, spouse, etc. Life is good sometimes. But I mostly find everything depressing and don’t know if I want to spend the next 50+ years doing it.

  • Horrible pressure from tutor
