  • Learning

I am pretty much of the thinking that I can learn anything in life if I apply myself.

If I needed to, I could learn physics.  If I needed to learn to computer program, I could learn to program.
I see people who think there are certain things they are not capable of learning.
Are you capable of learning anything?

  • There are things I do not enjoy. There are things I am not good at. But so far there is nothing I can not learn. But I have reason to believe there are levels of theoretical mathematics that might beat me. But I had not seen them

  • If I had the time, probably. But I don’t.

  • Yes,  there are thinks that I cannot learn and do not want to study. i have a very talented wife who fills in the blanks for me.

  • If u take the time and effort you can. However laziness and frustration usually trumps all, otherwise we all would be super physicists

  • I could probably be the next Einstein if I wasn’t wasting my learning abilities on memorizing episodes of Family Guy.  Oh well, I don’t regret my decision.

  • I am capable of learning social skills. (but I doubt I will)

  • I find it hard to wrap my head around complicated math, and I suck at athletics, but other than that I’m very good at learning.  My memory is impeccable, so it’s easy for me to retain knowledge.  Plus my determination is ridiculously high when there’s something I want.

I also have a background in sales and speech and debate, so I’m very logical as well as persuasive.  Convincing people to do/buy stuff is fun and I’m good at it.

  • Just about.  Not sure if I could memorize all 2,100 characters of Mandarin Chinese, but I  may try it sometime.

  • Hmmm… Maybe.  I do enjoy a challenge.

  • No. I may be able to learn some things in theory but not necessarily in practice, such as complex math. I can learn the formulas easy enough but have a hard time apply the correct formula in certain scenarios.
I think the idea that enough application and drive can allow one to learn anything is not as valid as some think it is. If you can’t carry a tune, you might be able to read the notes, learn the timing even but you cannot sing. Learning something and being able to apply it are two different things.

  • I’m very determined and often think the same thing, that I can learn anything if I wanted to. I have limitations though so maybe not everything but many things. I shall be testing that theory as I head back for some postgrad studies next month :) Completely agree with @Yorokobi1010 -  that is what it comes down to in my opinion too!

  • We have incredible potential to learn and do many things well. At the same time I appreciate people who honestly do one thing well. In part I attribute my several successful and lucrative careers to not watching television for 30 years.

  • Probably. I just need time and motivation to do so.

But that being said, I can’t do everything, so I do everything that I can.

  • Nah, i think i’m too old to learn a new language and be fluent in it

  • Yes. I was thinking about this today actually. Most of the things I have chosen to pursue in my life did not come easy to me. I became good at them almost purely by effort. Music and playing the trumpet is my best example. My family knows NOTHING about music, so I did not have a musical upbringing, no siblings or family members being a role model. The trumpet was always hard for me, but I just tried and persevered, and 7 years later I made it into university as a trumpet major.

Though that didn’t pan out, I also played hockey and a similar thing happened.

  • If you put me in a university setting, I will get bored to tears no matter how interesting the subject might appear to be when I signed up for the courses. But on my own I’ve learned so much since leaving that setting it’s like I’m a sponge. I think the standard university format was just poison to me and learning stuff on my own is just so much better and a lot more fun.

For instance, right now I am reading four books.

    1. Bearing the Cross by David Garrow which is a biography about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Were I reading this in an American History course I would hate it and be miserable. Right now I can’t wait to read more and more about this great American’s life.

    2. Washington: A Life by Ron Chernow which is a biography about George Washington. Were I reading this for a course about the American Revolution I’d be like, “Holy Crap am I bored.” But because I can read at my own pace and dissect each chapter as I wish I enjoy it immensly.

    3. A Beautiful Mind by Sylvia Nasar which is a biography about the Mathematician John Nash. This book might be standard reading in an Abnormal Psychology class. The thought of having to read certain section by certain times and not having the flexibility to take things at my own pace is just abhorrent to me. Instead, I get to let each chapter sink in and write out my thoughts(like I do for every book I read) as I move along.

    4. The Unveiling by Keith Harris which is a book about understanding the biblical book of Revelation. Put me in a theology course with rigid guidelines and quizzes and tests and all sorts of notes on a blackboard and I’ll tune out and think about something else. Now that it’s just me and the book I can take the time to really understand what the author wants to get across.

So I guess the answer to your question, Dan, is yes. I feel like if I have the freedom to pursue the subject on my own time, I can learn anything.

  • The vast majority of people are capable of learning most academic topics. Degree of understanding and comprehension might show some separation in the curve though, especially at the tail end.

  • As you age, the way you learn and retain things changes. You will be figuring that out in not too many years if you are really observant. When you are younger – you can absorb many more things in a short amount of time. Its a very gradual change – much like eyesight – but if you are observant – you will notice.

  • Not whether there’s a god or not.

  • “Are you capable of learning anything?”
The answer can only be yes because if you say no, that is something you’ve learnt.

  • @mhmd1434 - What is your point in adding these unsupported declarations in the comments you visit? Is it because declaring your faith is all you have? That is only preaching to the choir. If you have an argument then give it, otherwise, you’re just a nonsensical irritant.

  • I believe I am capable of getting pretty good at anything I apply myself to. There’s a difference between learning something and being the master of masters though.

  • I think I am capable of learning most things. BUT there are timley and financial limits, and whether it is possible to ACTUALLY learn things within these limits can be influenced by the talent.

You just don’t always GET TO apply yourself to something as you would need to.

  • I have a friend in the medical field who says that she can do anything if she’s shown what to do. I pretty much agree with her.

I worked for an old MASH dr. who told me he would rather just see me do something then to just stand there with clean gloves.

  • No.

I can’t remember things as well as I should be able to.  This makes learning math difficult.

  • Can you learn a foreign language fluently? I want to see you on Xanga chat speaking Chinese :)

  • Yes. I could learn anything, if I wanted to. Love physics, by the way.

  • You have a high level of self-esteem, Dan.  I think that’s admirable.

  • Yes, though I might not enjoy it as much as learning other things, or find it as easy as others, or be as good at it as others. But I could learn almost anything to a reasonable degree if I honestly tried. I think that goes for most people, we’re more capable than we realize.

  • Yes, given time I can learn anything I set mind too.

  • just as Adam said I am alarmed that a mother can get paid $8484 in four weeks on the computer. did you read this page http://www.rev24.com

  • Nope. Too stubborn.

  • I need a patient teacher. I need to be able to ask “dumb” questions. I remember being afraid to hold up class with my questions because my teacher and peers would get impatient.

Reason #237 why I will homeschool my children (and hire quality tutors for each subject).

  • Yep.  I can learn anything if I have the right person to teach it to me.  Just don’t put me there and tell me to “do it” like some people.

  • I am fully convinced that I will never come even remotely close to learning how to understand humanity.

  • I think I can if I applied myself

  • I’m with you on this one. I think if I put in the time, I can learn anything.

  • I’m going through a period in my life where I just crave knowledge, but on my own terms.

Anything I truly want to learn, I can. In school, while I did well when push came to shove, I was most disinterested in most of what they were trying to teach me because I wasn’t able to connect with it. I barely got through 10th grade, with only 2 credits to show for it, but it was when I ventured into the world and found myself that I found what I wanted to dedicate my time learning about.

I think a little bit of everything appeals to me when it’s applied correctly. It depends on what I’m going through, what I can relate to. When I’m really into something, I believe I’m capable of just about anything for sure.

Except math. Numbers are NOT my thing, never have. Maybe some day that will change, though. Who’s to say?

  • I would like to say yes to this, but the realist in me knows my limitations… so I have to say, No.

Edit to add:  on second thought… with enough time and assistance, I could probably learn anything.  So, my answer is Yes.

  • I am fully incapable of learning many things! For example, I cannot, in any shape or form, comprehend sewing, knitting, or crocheting. Which is funny because they’re not considered very difficult things.

  • i think it’d be 75% my enthusiasm and 25% from great teacher.

  • Yup. I am pleanty capable. The problem I have is motivation.

  • Perhaps. .. .

  • I’ve come to realize that I m capable of learning anything, but I only retain the things that are interesting to me. 😄

  • I used to think so, but I lack the time.  And being in computer science takes a lot out of me.

  • I try to be. Not always successful, but always willing to try. ;)
