Black
Several times on my site when I have used the term "African American," someone has pointed out to me that we should just call the person black.
Do you think it is inappropriate to refer to a person as black?

I haver come across the same thing. I try to be respectful by saying "African-american" and then I get told I should say "black" instead. Life never ceases to amazxe me.. lol

No, I don't think so... It's like how there's Irish-Americans and Italian-Americans but they just get called "white" or "caucasian."
I think if you have one or both parents who're from another country, you're [that ethnicity]-American... but once your family's been here awhile.. you become black or white or Asian or whatever the generalization is.
I dont think there is anything wrong with it.. Strangely enough, in my econ class today my professor lectured about how in economic reviews and academic papers they catagorize african americans as "black" and many people find it offensive...

Nah. Actually, I always kind of wondered if "African American" was really the phrase that was implying/assuming things... I mean, not all people with dark skin are American. Or African, for that matter...
I've always seen the issue as somewhat of a quandry; we should give an entire group a label based on the color of their skin for the sake of political correctness? Just because a large number of black people in this country descended from Africans doesn't make it right. What if people insisted that white was an inappropriate term for anglos and insisted that they be called English Americans?
Not all white people come from England just like not all black people come from Africa. What about English descendents born in South Africa (or whose parents were born in South Africa) and moved (or was born in) America? Wouldn't that make them African American?
i prefer black. i dont consider myself american, being that the qualifications of a citizens stretches beyond just being born here. but hell we're called something different every other decade. we've went from nigga, to negro, to afro america, to african american. whats next lawd?

@Endowedbythecreator - You forgot colored as one of the other things black people have been called. I don't know if it's good or not. I just listen to find out what's the PC thing to call people these days, and go along with that.
I remember when I as writing a paper on South Africa and Nelson Mandella and all that for English class, my teacher tried to correct me and tell to use the phrase "African American" to sound more professional. It took all I had to not call her retarded.

why not? we call ourselves, "white" even though we're technically, "Caucasian"...
I've always used the term, and see nothing wrong with it.
