Is Myspace the Digital Ghetto?
I was reading an article about claimed there is a "racial disparity" between Myspace and Facebook.
The article made reference to a speaker that indicated that "white flight" caused whites and others to leave the less cultured myspace for Facebook.
The speaker also indicated that Myspace users are more likely to be "brown or black." She said that "teens who use Facebook are more likely to condescend their Myspace-favoring peers." Here is the link: Link
Do you think Myspace is the digital ghetto?

actually...yes.
Ya kinda
[my comment from site article]
Honestly, the only reasons I started joining social networking sites was because of my friend's recommendations to do so. It started when Xanga was still widely praised before the oncoming wave of MySpace, Faceboek, then Twatter fiends started erupting on the net.
I actually reverted back to Xanga when I stopped talking to friends on MySpace - have a better chance of chatting with them on Facebook now :P
It could be determined by reasons to why anyone would join any network. Originally it was for friends I could talk to online whenever I was bored, or if I wanted someone to hang out with. Now, some crowds use it for some small online fame. Look at YouTube, remember LonelyGirl15?
Before I get into a detailed five page essay on why I joined social sites, I'm going to say that I like Facebook for being easier to contact friends, while MySpace is just a lovely site to try any freaky HTML/CSS script for lolz and following bands you ACTUALLY like.
Plus, Xanga will remain my true online domain <3
It's a pointless website, that's for sure
i suppose. they are some "ugh" stuff on there.
xo
no, Blackplanet is! still. always. MySpace can never hope to achieve that level of ghetto.
it's trying really hard, though. if Jerry Springer had made a social networking site, it would be called MySpace.
Psssh, no.
No
Myspace still exists? (and yes)
Sort of. It's like the... trailer park of the internet. But ghetto makes it sound almost cool.
I never noticed it, course I just use my myspace now to follow bands.
I'm not on it anymore, so I don't know. >.>
No, I just think MySpace is one gigantic forum for advertisers.
I still don't understand why everyone favors Facebook over Myspace. Facebook is the sewers of social network sites. At least Myspace has videos. :)
ghetto can mean alot of things.
i think what most people think when they say "ghetto" is poor trash, either white or black.
since most people who live in ghettos are poor, i don't see how you can generalize that most people on myspace are ghetto. stats?
Facebook is the Upper East Side.
And Xanga...is....Times Square.
Heavily influenced/biased on my part.
nope facebook is
What's the difference? Honestly
Myspace is the digital ghetto, but not because of race.
I prefer hoodstars
myspace is bleeeeh.
Myspace is ghetto not because of race.
It's got a lot of everyone on it, but by far it has more little kids exposing themselves.
Dumb little kids from the ages of 10-13 don't go to facebook because you can't put annoying glitter-text and bad youtubes all over it.
i agree with jupiter312. My experience doesn't seem to show that it's a race thing, just that the goal seems to be who can post the most number of images of themselves in competition with their friends.
Facebook gets on my nerves even though I have one... you have to go around the effin world and back to do anything... its so annoying... besides I dont really see anything on Myspace that screams ghetto but maybe that's just me...
@Loser_Lizzy - I agree about the little kids... my brother just recently got involved with a girl on myspace that claimed to be 16 (he is 18) and she convinced him to go north for a week to see her... well turns out she is 14 and her parents were pissed when they found out... lucky for him they let it go since he had no idea... this could happen on any online community though
