Smoking Part 3
In New York they are considering raising the age in which a person can begin smoking to the age of 21. The chair of the City Council introduced a bill that would make it illegal to purchase cigarettes for anyone under 21. Mayor Michael Bloomberg has supported the bill in order to help “curb the habit.”
Would raising the smoking age from 18 to 21 really curb the habit?
Comments (217)
No. And it’s a dumb idea.
Yes
I think that it would… Im not sure why I think it, but it would
People can get married at age 18 and die for their country at age 18 but can’t smoke? That seems silly.
3rd!?
just ban it all tgeather
Smoking is harmful and the less amount of people smoking, the better.
ahahaa, sorry but no, everyone basically starts in high school, we’re not 21, but hey we do it.
This proposal is too ridiculous to even comment on….
Cool! 3rd!
Anyway …. to answer the question, I don’t think it would do anything to curb the habit! Here in Scotland many kids start smoking whilst still in high school, despite that being illegal. <><
i meant we’re not 18*
it’s like drinking.
no, but i still think that’s a good idea.
No. It would probably make it worse. Teenagers find ways to drink, they would find ways to smoke as well.
For some, maybe.
For others, no.
I agree with imopinionated too.
That’s very true
it actually might, because a few years later people’s minds would be more mature, and they would have enough sense not to do it, or it could backfire and create more temptation to try it earlier
smoking is still SOOOO disgusting..eww
anything that makes it harder will help curb it. I am pretty sure New York is already one of the states with the most stringent smoking laws.
~~~megan
no it wouldn’t.
Fight mental Illness Stigma
I do agree with BLONG1110 - smoking is dreadfully harmful to people’s health, yet, despite all the health warnings and evidence, folk carry on smoking! I don’t think anything health authorities do or say will ever make a difference. I just don’t like having to breathe in second hand smoke. <><
Hell NO!!
Candy
I think it would help, and I’d certainly support such a law, but I don’t think it would pass. I think enforcing possession penalties for those under 18 would be more of a deterrent.
RYC:
absolutely!!!!!!!!!! thank you!!!
it may or may not, but isn’t it worth it considering how many lives it might save?
no.
people smoke at 14, its not gonna stop anyone
i’m not sure how concrete my facts are, but i’m pretty sure Spain has less alcohol related deaths/injuries/crime because there is no age restriction for the consumption (maybe even purchase) of alcohol.
no, its not gonna stop people from smoking…
Raising the age would not curb the habit. Prohibition has never worked. It may have the opposite effect, like raising the drinking age did.
No, then you’d just get teenagers and college students headed out to get older folks to buy cigarettes for ‘em.
Silly.
RYC: Oh come now Dan….Don’t yank my chain….hehe.
Candy
Only if it’s enforced with stiff penalties for people who ignore the law. I saw some kids bum a cigarette off a smoking adult at a bus stop recently. He even offered them a light.
no, i know many many people who have been smoking since 10 or 11 .. regardless of how it kills and how illegal it is ..
raising the age will just create more temptation for people to wanna smoke ..
though, i personally dont smoke, i have seen too many people i love die from cancer and emphysema (spelling?)
hmm.
Heh. No… And what would happen to those who are already “habitual” smokers?
He just admitted that smoking is a habit forming drug by saying that, so if the state causes all those between ages 18 and 21 to become illegal smokers, then they should be required to provide therapy and and a rehab of sorts for them. Which would cost a massive ammount of money.
Or they could just grandfather those people in.
Evan.
Hopefully, but probably not.
Rowan
No, not at all. If people want to smoke, then they’re going to smoke no matter the age restriction. There’s always ways to get around the law.
I don’t know. I didn’t start smoking until I was 19 but I don’t think the age really stops a lot of people any way.
it will be like alcohol, they will get it if they want it even if they make it 100% illegal!!!
I think it might stop a few people…
It would`nt have stopped me though, I was going to do what I wanted no matter what.
Smoking is great.
It wouldn’t change a damn thing.
It might, but that doesn’t stop people from doing it underage one bit–most of my friends who are now old enough to legally smoke started when they were in high school before they turned 18. So . . . for the few rule followers out there, it might “curb the habit” but on the most part, i don’t think it will.
Kids at my school that are freshman smoke with the security guards no joke. And they always have packs of cigarettes. So i don’t think this law will curb the habit.
A lot of people start smoking in college. If it were less accessible then perhaps they wouldn’t even start…
But then again the same can be said about alcohol and a higher legal age certainly hasn’t seemed to affect underage drinking much.
nope, nope, nope. lower it to 12. kids these days start at that age. okay, i’m kidding but really you see them little children who probably don’t pubic hair yet smokin’ it up.
making them 10$ a pack would -
I don’t think it will “curb” the habit. Teenagers are going to smoke cigs just like they drink beer at parties now. They aren’t supposed to, but they do it anyways.
-Kristin
greeneyes_bjb <– What she said.
yes…maybe
so many kids hav connections its hardly gonna make a difference. people r just gonna get their older friends to buy cigarettes for them.
nope.
No, nobody turns 18 and THEN starts smoking. They start when they’re 12 or 13 and then buy them legally at 18.
no
What joke is all I can say!!!!
Has raising the drinking age curbed or discouraged our youth from drinking?
No!
Education starts in the home and there are a lot of parents out there buying their childrens “smokes” just as they do their alcohol.
seriously ban it? I think that people have the constitutional right to be an idiot…it’s somewhere in there. legislation does not affect when people start smoking. The majority of smokers start in their teens, and moving the age from 18-21 is just stupid. Heck, drinking age should be 18…I disagree with drunkeness and I think smoking is bad for you, but YOU HAVE THE RIGHT to.
Mayor Bloomberg is trying to gain support of people who dont smoke, and at the same time to people who do smoke will lik him because they know smoking is wrong. Its an all around good political move.
i think so.
no sir
no, people smoke then they want
When I was 14, the legal age for smoking was 18. I still managed to smoke whenever I wanted to. Heck, you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting someone who’s willing to contribute to the deliquency of a minor.
I know that i won’t get any answers on this, but for everyone who thinks that smoking is wrong and wants the government to pass a law against it. do you really want politicians to do your thinking for you? I say that as long as your freedoms do not impeade on the freedoms of others then there should be no law against it. If a bar owner wants to open a smoking bar and does not fear the non-smoker’s lack of business…he should be able to do so. if a resurant wants to ban smoking and doesn’t mind loosing the revenue from smokers…then do it…its a private business!!
No. If anything, it’ll make the habit increase in minors, or at least people under the legal age. And sugarbear is right, Spain and other countries with the same laws do have a lower alcohol related death or accident count, simply because people are allowed to have it whenever they want.
Does anyone remember learning about the U.S. ban on alcohol in the early-post-colonial times back in history class? When drinking was made illegal, people hoarded the stuff, or brewed their own, or stole it from others. But once the ban was lifted, the amount of people that stole it and hid it and everything dropped significantly. It’s part of human nature. We want what we can’t have.
No, it’s going to increase theft.
Heck no. Having to be 21 to drink doesn’t stop people so why would it stop them from smoking?
no. people will still smoke. pots illegal, but people still do it. makeing smoke illeagle for more people wont stop it anymore.
No it hasn’t done it at 18, it won’t do it at 21. Why anyone would want to walk around smelling like an ashtray, and killing themselves with each puff is beyond me.
No. Not at all.
No. Everyone I talk to had started long before they were actually of age. It’s like drinking – yeah, the legal age is 21, but at a party filled with high school sophomores, there’s still going to be a shitload of drinks.
nope. not a bit
No, because kids are still going to find a way to get a pack of smokes.
No, 21 for drinking hasn’t stopped underage kids from drinking so why would it stop them from smoking?
God, I wish our leaders would use common sense sometimes…
that is so dumb . 21 doesnt stop ppl from drinking why would they think it would stop ppl from smoking?
no. Itll just make it more tempting bcause they have to wait longer for it to be legal
It might help…and every little bit is good.
No, people will get the cigarettes other ways.
just as much as having the drinking age be 21 has helped stop illegal drinking.
so i guess that’s a resounding heck no.
delayed gratification increases the chances of a person wanting to “try it out” anyway
nope
there are people my age (13) who smoke and its illegal
the only thing that wud help it baning them altogether and making them way less available.
besides, it should be a person’s choice whether they want to drink, drive without a seatbelt, ride a motorcycle without a helmet, smoke, or generally die young.
No.. it would make the habit worse. Stupid politicians.
don’t smoke, doesn’t affect me, and nope cuz if ya wanna do it ya are gonna
I dunno.
it wouldn’t really apply to me b/c i think smoking is one of grossest, sickest things people can do that hurts the people around them as well. smoking it so disgusting- you might as well go to the back of a running car and breathe in the sulfur… totally sick.
Not a chance. If they are getting the cigarettes younger than 18 they will get them younger than 21. It’s not something that will be prevented. Though I did get a kick out of getting carded at Walmart last week when I picked up my weekly carton of cigarettes. I looked at the woman to see if she was joking and she was dead serious. I had to pull out my license and show her the birth year of 1961!! I however loved getting carded. I started smoking at the age of 12 and never once had a problem buying my smokes. Course a lot of places back in that day and age had cigarette machines which there’s no way to regulate the age of the buyer there.
no people can get addicted at any age
No – if you want to smoke, you will find a way
no
yeah
I don’t know of many smokers who waited till they were 18 to begin smoking, so I don’t really think that making the legal age any different would help because they start when they’re much younger anyway.
No, it’s make teens want them more
Its a good idea. But im sure the younger age will still be able to get cigarettes and alcohol and drugs.
what about those that are already smoking and are under the age of 21, and what about those that will be under the age by the time the bill is passed? it’s stupid to try to do something like that, I don’t know if you where alive then (sorry if I’m grossly mistaken) but I’m sure you’ve heard of prohibition, it seems that something like that might occur once again. seems likely doesn’t it?
no i think peer pressure is doing a good enough job. now most of us think its gross to smoke or date a smoker. smoking has become a social no no in a lot of circles
that will probably make it worse, because it’ll give teenagers even more of a reason to smoke so they can “fight the system.” and I don’t think it would help “curb the habit” for people 21 or over.
nah, it’ll just raise the illegal purchases of them
no i dont think that raising the age would help at all because i know people who are still in middle school that smoke, and unless parents make an effort to stop underage smoking, then there won’t be a differance.
Did raising the drinking age to 21 help curb that habbit?
no. if they want to smoke, they want to smoke. sometimes making a big deal out of something makes the use of it worse, rather than better as is desired.
Did it curb it in going to the age it is at now? I think it is crazy. You can be drafted to serve against your will in the army, but you can’t smoke legally?
I really think that the more you tell someone they shouldn’t or can’t do something the more they want to do it and will find ways of doing it.
no it wouldnt. because kids way younger than that are already making that a habit. instead of getting someone 18 to buy them their smokes, they’ll just get someone whos 21.
Yeah Baby. Nice buns.
I think that it wouldn’t curb it but prevent it from happening sooner. Maybe then, people may get more time to get a real way to stop smoking.
i highly doubt it.
it wouldn’t change a thing
there are children that get it at thirteen , fourteen, twelve, and even younger still. they are a plethora of ways to get ahold of cigarettes, but on the other hand, there are ways we can fix this problem, but raising the age? not helping. they will get ahold of them either way.
i started smoking when i was 16, i still smoke and even though im not legally old enough to buy them, i have no trouble doing so. im not sure that raising the age limit would make that much difference.
No…they usually start when they’re younger than that anyway, and get people to buy cigarettes for them. It would just prolong the time they had to beg people to buy them for them.
nope. i know people who, by the time they were 18 and could smoke legally, were ready to start using the patch. once’s been on the 311 waiting list for over a year now.
I don’t really think so… even when I was 13 I remember my peers getting their hands on cigarettes
If there’s a will, there’s a way and so if people want to smoke underage they will find that way
no.
You is such a handsome man.
No. Kids under 18 get cigarettes in some way, and kids under 21 will, too. Besides, kids 18-20 will have to get off of cigarettes then, and that’s hard, but then again, it may movivate those people to stop.
Why ban smoking at all? It is bad for you, but so is football. Leave it up to PEOPLE to make decisions, not the government.
Justus
No. It would only delay the horrible habbit.
Ok, explain to me exactly what happens when the catch the kids who smoke now? Oh yeah, nothing. The law is only aimed at the stores. Legislating common sense will never work. Look at drugs…our local high school has a heroin problem, not wimpy cigarettes and booze but full fledged heroin.
the answer is not in congress, it is in prayer! Good old fashioned time on the knees.
Pisht. No.
People in Scotland start smoking when they’re 9 or 10.
I think it might help some. So many kids start smoking because of peer pressure. A lot of maturing happens between the years of 18 and 21. I think a 21 year old is less likely to cave to meet his/her peer’s expectations.
The legal age to buy smokes here in TN is currently 18 but I see plenty of 12-16 year olds puffing away.
It will only mean that people who obey the law will live for 3 extra years.
Which is a good start.
I agree that it’snot going to stop people from smoking. And alot of people I know started smoking before they were even 18. They’ll find a way. I used to smoke but when I turned 18 the ‘thrill’ of being bad was gone, so I quit. Why allow people the chance to be a rebel longer?
I highly doubt it
they will still find a way, sure were there is law there is a way around it. but it might be worth a shot…………. cuz any improvement is improvement all the same………
doubtful–but encouraged.
Hell no. People are like 8 and smoke.
anything to do away with that terrible problem. the more the legislature can do the better.
have u read “to kill a mockingbird”? i love it and im not done w/ it yet. i think im on chapter 20 i think. reading something like that made me realize that my self purpose in life is to make everyone happy…as happy as i can in the most honest way possible.
have u heard the song “whisky lullaby”? my gf put it on her site and its just one of the sad country songs that gets me. i melt when i hear sappy country songs.
those two paragraphs didn’t have anything to do about smoking. sorry. i just have to get things off of my mind or else i think about them all day.~NICK
No. People will find a way to smoke anyway if they want to.
no
<><Renee’
yeah i think it would but i think it would definately be unfair for people who are under the age of 21 who have some sort of addiction or dependency on cigarettes
no and they should lower the drinking age to 18 or they should raise the minimum age to serve in the military to 21
Maybe a tiny bit…
If these people are getting hooked on smoking at a younger age than 18, then raising the age wouldn’t help.
maybe…but they’ll do it anyway
Pffffffft, no.
no but it might make it a little harder for kids to buy them. it can be easy to pass for 18 but 21 takes a little more work
no, teens do it illegally anyway. only a few law abiding lung destroying 18-20 year olds are gonna stop. prolly all the rebel kids are gonna start doing it, cuz it’s more not allowed. tehe.
Baby I be smokin from the day I was born
Honestly? No.
not a good idea….because there would be riots among all the kids who just turned 18 and started smoking and were now not allowed to anymore because of an age change. they would have to have some kind of loophole clasue in there for all those people. and it wouldnt stop people from smoking anyway. they would just have to wait longer, or get people to buy for them.
no, think about how many people you know who smoke but actually waited until they were 18 and legally able to before they started? i don’t know any. everyone i know who smokes started well before they were 18 and legally able to purchase cigarettes.
I think that they should make smoking illegal. I think it’s a great idea to raise the smoking age, but they need to just go ahead and make it illegal. Now that we know how harmful smoking is to the smoker and those around them, it shouldn’t be allowed. Think about it… a person can legally give their children lung cancer in the comfort of their own home. Hey, I have friends who smoke, but I by no means incourage their habit.
God bless you in Jesus’ name.
John Anthony
No, because alot of the 13-17 year olds here smoke, some just becuase they can’t yet. Raising the age to 21 would make it even ‘cooler’ to smoke when you’re young, and it would make more people want to do it
I don’t smoke though, neither does anyone in my family lol.. so it wouldn’t hurt me.
I doubt it
Nope. Young people would just kepp geting the cigarettes the same way they always have.
smoking is the cause for many kinds of illness. The less smoking the better. Why not just get rid of it all together? why are we allowing something like tobaco to harm the well being of the citizens of this country?
Send this to 15 people in the next 143 mins. When you are done press F6 and your crushes name will appear on the screen in big letters. This is scary cuz it works!! if you break the chain you will have problems with relationships for the next 5 years JUST COPY AND PASTE!!! NO FORWARD
no. i mean CMON. you can send a kid to war at 18 but when he comes back why can’t he have a cigarette??? and
You take care of yourself, sweetheart.
no kids start smoking whenb they are young like 10-12… So why would that stop them?
No I don’t think so. Under agers still find a way!
Oh, Dan, the world is ending tomorrow. http://www.eon8.com. Seriously. What a joke that is causing such panic.
No I don’t think so. Under agers still find a way!
A little bit, because the 18 year old high schoolers can’t get it for their friends. But if there is a will there is a way, so not significantly.
no.
Does making marijuana illegal curb that smoking habit? no. You’d be surpirsed how many people smoke weed….
It’ll just cost more money….Incur more court costs, higher taxes on cigarettes, waste more time…..When you tell people they can’t do something…It’s PROVEN that it makes them want to do it even more!!!
in new jersey, it’s 19! what a random age. and plus, what’s the worst is that they did it recently, this april, and all who were already 18 had to have the right to buy cigarettes taken away. what a strange government!
no, I know 15 year olds who smoke, why would that make a difference
no, they’ll just find other ways to get cigarettes.
I agree with “Emjay1″
yes! this would totally help the problem because most smokers begin smoking before the age of 21
The things we crave the most are the ones we can’t have.
> I will have to agree with ‘citril’ and ‘imopinionated’. Friendship, buddyhood and girlfriendship are not adult only concepts. Most smokers in all their categories start because of status, acceptance, ‘ get in good with’, etc….. and high school time can be late starters. Bumping the age up is a political ploy like any other to please a constituancy of the politicos in question, nothing more. Sad, but true….
Peace
Can’t legislate morality or good sense. No.
L,r
no. most of the people i know who smoke are under 18 anyways.
most of the people that I know who smoke started when they were much younger than 18. That means that a lot of people who started smoking were smoking illegally…so raising the age to 21 is only going to extend the number of years they are illegal.
Oh, and what about the people who are smoking legally at 18-20, will they suddenly be disallowed from smoking until they are 21? you can’t tell an addiction to take a nap for 2-3 years.
No.
No…a majority of the smokers I know started at a less than legal age anyways, so…pass a law, create more illegal activities…hmmm…
no. People are 14, and they smoke. Illegally. But no matter what you change the age to, people are still going to be able to get their hands on the stuff.
No, it won’t help, and besides, once something is banned, the more someone wants that item!
Of course. I mean we don’t have kids smoking in Jr. High even though you are supposed to 18. It’ll definitely help. Just like having the drinking age at 21 prevents underage drinking.
No. My boy friends 15 and smokes. Its not like they wont find another way.
raising the age will just piss off some people.
but of course, if I had it my way I’d just make it illegal- but thats just me.
Hmm, interesting question. I don’t see how it would deter someone that truly wants to smoke though.
absolutely not. people I know (I’m 14) have plenty of ways of getting cigarettes as of right now. it doesn’t matter what the smoking age is, people will find ways to do it.
It won’t help one bit.
Just make it illegal already.
Anything else that was on the market and found to be the cause of so many deaths and health problems would be pulled from the shelves as soon as possible. Ciggs just make the US too much money to get rid of them.
no
oh yea, just like it keeps teenagers from drinking alcohol
No, but I see that would piss off a lot of people here… a lot of soldiers smoke during deployments or while they’re in the field to relieve stress. It’s just one more unnecessary punishment on their end. Either was – it wouldn’t curb the habit. Did the alcohol consuption go down when the drinking age went from 18 to 21? No.. so why would smoking be any different.
What aabou tall those poor 18,19,& 20 year old addicts?
I think it would help, but not THAT MUCH. People under 18 as it is are able to get a hold of cigarettes. (Same thing with the drinking age.)
Well, let’s see…of the 13 through 17 year olds I know? Two out of three smoke. Yeah. Since, you know, the whole must-be-18 thing is working wonders, I’d imagine that 21 would make just such a difference…
no, i think that changing the age to 100 would help though.
maybe…but thats not a bad thing either
No. I for one am tired of government telling everyone what they can and can’t do. Food is next. Just wait and see. Nanny state…nanny state….nanny state.
I don’t think it’s gonna help all that much… most people I know that smoke started when they were ten or twelve. They’ll still get it one way or the other.
No way. They’d just get older siblings to buy them.
i know people who tried their first cigarette at age 7. No matter what, people under 18 or 21 whichever age they make the new law for, will be able to obtain a pack of cigarettes. Whether it’s from an older friend, parents who smoke, a fake ID, or simply because they look old enough to purchase a pack of cancer sticks without the requirement of an ID. The law means very little to people when it comes to smoking and drinking.
We can get married at 18
Start driving a car at 16
Go to war at 18
I mean…we’re pretty much considered legal adults at 18. So why should drinking and smoking be pushed to 21? I am not a smoker nor do I believe in drinking your life away, but people do what they want to do. Think about it, when you’re a teenager, everything that your parents or the law tells you not to do seems appealing to you. So let’s do the math here, smoking at 18 and drinking at 21…don’t you think that would drive people to smoke and drink before they come of age?
well yes and no,dan. yes in the way that teens would have a harder time getting cigarettes, and no in the way that they could just get them the same way they did when they started smoking at 13…..
I haven’t smoked in like 8 years but the other day while being “forced” to go to a strip club and having a hottie grind my member without being able to touch her…I had to buy some. It was out of those vending machines and it cost me 8.00!!! Holy Shit! By the way if you’re ever at the “King Of Diamonds” in Minesotta, tell Gwen that I still think of her…anyway, my point….so do you know why the price is so ridiculous now? Because they are so hard to get nowadays and even harder to find a place to smoke. Remember what prohibition did for alcohol? Did that stop it…shit , all that did was bring it underground and made an illegal market for it. Look, if some asshole (like me) is willing to fork over 8.00 for some cancer sticks that he knows full well will kill him, God Damnit let him. Mind your own fuckin’ business! Find some other crusade. Enough said.
No.
No, sadly.
No. I know 14 year olds who have no problems finding cancerettes. All it’d do is piss a lot of people off and send a lot more to jail. What are the people that are between 18 and 21 supposed to do, anyway?
i don’t think it would…eighteen year olds would still smoke…twelve year olds would still have access to cigarettes…it wouldn’t change anything.
People need to stop.
no, I knew kids who smoked when I was 12.
I agree w/ greeneyes_bjb.
I think it’s pointless.
You’re joking, right. It will result in nothing except to kill another tree for the purpose of printing the new law and give the courts another way to do revenue collecting.
It won’t help.
It’s the whole Forbidden Fruit thing a lot for early starters, I think.
I went to Italy, and the drinking age there is 16. I did not see anyone out in Rome or in Florence drunk as skunks.. but the smoking age is only 16, too, and damned if just about EVERYONE there was smoking.
no, there are tons opf people in high school who smoke, the law has never stopped them before, what’s three more years? I don’t think anyone eagerly awaits their 18th so they can go buy some cigs.
nope – theyll smoke anyway
its s good idea cus if the cops catch them smoking ilgegal wont they go to jail
Don’t you love it when they think your children are theirs and not yours except when it comes to the responsibilities that cost money and time.
NO
Um no.
No
People already under the age of 18 already smoke illegally.
How is raising the age supposed to help? It’s likely to just stick more people in jail for [not so bright] reasons.
I was talking to my friend about marijuana, and he was really ticked off about the fact that it’s illegal yet more healthy than cigs…
i agree with: last_shot_of_acid, just ban it!
No. And what’s so bad about smoking, that government goes on these constant crusades of Prohibitionist pietist virtue to stamp it out? It can cause cancer. So? That’s for us to worry about, not them. It’s none of Bloomberg’s business, is it?
it’s stupid. i’ve been smoking for 3 years and i’m 19. i would be one pissed [crazy] bitch if they changed that law.
People can be in command of a huge moving hunk of metal at 16. People can spew out a new human even sooner than that. Let them smoke and drink. Laws don’t prevent that sort of thing.
This already happened in New Jersey. Well, kind of, they did raise the age to buy cigarettes to 19. Awesome. So now the people voting people into elected office, dying for their country, gambling in select states/areas, getting prostitutes in Nevada, going to strip clubs, and well into seeing R rated movies… can’t…. smoke? Wait, why? Oh, cause it’s bad? Well I’m pretty damn sure they’re old enough to know they can kill themselves with a nice cigarette if they WANT to. This is still stupid. Why not just make it so that everyone should be 35 to do anything. You can go to college, sure. But you can’t vote, drink, smoke, or any of the above until you turn 35. Why? Then when they get their rights, they can also run for president. Yeah, how about that. Yeah, that sounds just super. Equal rights? YOU BET!
no.. all the underage ppl will still smoke newayz.. just like they do now.
well..we can always hope!
Do you think any of the kids that want to smoke follow the 16 yr. old age limit? NO WAY! I personally hate it but if I was interested I could be a chain smoker and I’m only 14. It’s just so easy to get our little grubby hands on. It is almost near impossible to get those kids off of it now, raising the limit will do nothing but waste those peoples time that they could be using to maybe think of better ways to fund their school where they could teach 3rd graders how bad smoking actually is so that they won’t start. Catch ‘em when they are young and still give a damn what anyone says. Just a numbskull thought from a numbskull kid.
No. People sometimes even start smoking in middle school. Don’t ask me how they get them, but they do. But it would at least make it harder for them to get access. I say they should do it.
NO. FOR THE LAST TIME, PEOPLE, PROHIBITION DOESN’T WORK. HOW MANY TIMES DO WE HAVE TO TRY AND FAIL?
no, it work stop people from smoking
they’d be better off raising the tax on cigarettes or something…
Haha, wow, people who don’t smoke just don’t get it.
I, as a smoker, repect your right to not smoke. I respect that. I admire that. In turn, I will not smoke near you. I will not smoke in the same building as you, unless it is a restaurant with a clearly defined non-smoking section. I do not throw my cigarette butts on the ground, as I myself think that that is just unattractive for the ground. I go out of my way to dispose of my, and all butts I see, properly.
In turn, I am taxed, again and again, and more and more, by my State. 70 cents more per pack. I don’t like it, but I pay it. And I will always pay. If I can’t pay, I will make my own cigarettes. I will grow my own tobacco. And do everything I can to keep smoking. Why? I want to. I don’t have to. I enjoy the taste of fine tobacco. I buy packs imported from London for $6 a pop because they’re additive free and just taste good to me.
I ask that the non-smoker, can respect my rights as a HUMAN BEING, and try not to say such ignorant things as “shouldn’t they tax cigs?”, when in fact they do. Heavily. In almost every American state I know of, aside from Kentucky. They call this tax the “Sin Tax”, a nickname given by the lawmakers themselves, and it also applies to alcohol. Am I sinning if I choose to fill my lungs with smoke when I want to? Show me that part of the good book. I’d also like to see the part in our Constitution where it says anything about (today’s) fundamentally Christian based government being ALLOWED to push their dogma’s on the general public. I know the Constitution. Do you? Please, if it’s there, I’d love to see it. I’m respecting the rights of the non-smoker, so in return I’d like to be respected by them. Is that really to much to ask? Probably.
no
