You have probably heard by now that the new “Survivor” series has received some controversy. Apparently they are going to divide the teams by race. It will cause black teams to compete against white, Asian and Latino teams.
I personally thinks this is a sad day in television. It sets us back 40 years. It will foster a division that we as a country have tried to put behind us. It will cause us to stereotype our neighbors in ways that we as a nation have outgrown. We have come such a long way as a country to look past the color of skin. A show like this only sets us in a position to wonder about some of those thoughts that can creep back in our minds.
Which race do you think has an advantage in a game like Survivor: Blacks, whites, Asians or Latinos?

Individuals are not representative of a race, they all do happen to be human. The team with the best people will win, not the ‘best’ race because that doesn’t even make sense. Races can’t be compared on that kind of a basis, and I think this is a bad move for Survivor. Clearly cheap reality television has begun to scrap the bottom of the barrel (and here I thought they were already!).

The whole idea is crap because it places us in a “whites are one way, blacks are another, latinos are another, and asians another” view. Because, apparently, people don’t have individual personalities, flaws, and virtues. It all depends on our race.
I used to love Survivor, but I frankly refuse to watch this season. I will not sit there and watch a show that tells me that because I am a certain color (which is not true because I am of mixed race), that I will magically be a certain race.
It’s a concept that limits people. The sheer idea of it makes viewers ignore people for who they are, it makes people only look at skin tone. Like we’re supposed to take pity on somebody because they’re not white or something. It makes the players look weak.

Race shouldn’t matter, as we all know, at least not this day in age. If I HAD to answer, I’d say African Americans (it’s wrong to say “black” today, just fyi). White people are just lazy and want life handed to them you know? Asians in general are computer nerds/smart people but not necessarily social and fix day-to-day problems. You know what they say, “Ingenious people are great at solving challenges but suffer when it comes to the small things.” Latinos, from my experiences, are hard workers but I still think African Americans will win. It will probably be one of the minority races. I have a feeling that the producers will rig the odds to ensure that the whites do not win. They might for example comprise the white team of incompetent individuals while picking abnormally competent individuals for the other teams.
T.V. is politically correct and from that standpoint, it would be acceptable to have any team but the whites win. If by chance they did win, CBS could face a hail of criticism. The ideal situation for the network would be for the African Americans or Latinos to win.
You should do a follow up post to this asking what we think of the results when the show ends.

As the host said, this is a “social experiment.” It will be interesting to see how dividing people along racial lines will make them act towards their own group and other groups. And it’s not like the network is forcing the contestants to a) be on the show in the first place or b) to act in a certain way towards other racial groups. I think everyone is making far too big a deal out of this. Simply dividing teams by race is not racist. Dividing them with the intention of keeping one group down or making a point about superiority/inferiority is…but that’s not what’s being done here.

I’m so glad you posted about this because a friend of mine and I were trying to discuss this non-stereotypically but we kept drifting off into generalizations of who would win.
We figure Latinos or Asians. The assumption of Latinos was based on the generalization that they are good laborers… and the Asians because we couldn’t think of a good generalization of why they would win (seeing as there’s no math and science on Survivor) but of course we had that urge to root for the underdog.

I agree. It is very tragic. I think Mark Brunnet is just trying to increase ratings, but he sure is sinking low to do so. I’m probably still going to watch it, though, and his plan will most likely work, I suppose. No team has an advantage or disadvantage based on race; it’s who they pick, and I hope they pick outstanding people on every team to show that people can be great regardless of race.

The human race! Really, whoever is the best at playing the game will win. Besides, it would be difficult to say which race has an advantage in such a game (with equal numbers from each race), since there have been so few minority-race players. In that respect, I think it will be interesting. We’ll also see if society is mature enough to handle such an experiment. Judging by the response the mere idea of the show has gotten so far, I’d say it isn’t.
The show has separated the contestants by age and by sex in the past. Why is race so much different? When women and men were put on separate tribes, I don’t remember there being all these arguments about setting society back 50 years, and I think there were a lot more sexist attitudes and comments made on some of those shows than there will be racist comments in the new show. But I guess we’ll see…

I LOVE the idea. Who cares if its race against race. Its the same as the elder vs the younger. As I commented on Momoofmattnjen’s site—-I remember distinctivly in elementary school, even in the 1st grade, we were divided girls vs boys for spelling bee. Its just a category. I dont think it has set us back at all. To be an American means to be diverse. We are a nation of tangled ethnics and culture. We are filled with variety and a game that depicts just that is what America is all about. Different races coming to America to SURVIVE. If this is so wrong…why do we have neighborhoods and area of towns that are divided up based on race? NYC is a perfect example. We have a street for Italians, Hispanicans, Chinatown, etc.

I think that maybe people are overreacting. The show is getting old, so the producers just needed a way to spice things up and bring controversy back to the playing field. What better way to do it, than to piss off a bunch of politically correct people. I think it doesn’t matter their colour, in the end they will have to combine teams anyway just like they always do. NO group of people is going to spilt the money up between them. Now if they put the Mexicans swiming, the Asians in a circus, the Blacks in chains and the Whites on a couch, we could talk about bad stereotypes. Until then I think it was just a way to make the show more interesting and get more people to watch it.

Asians…most of the islands they have been on before are simular to islands alot of asian people grew up on…then maybe the African American group, then the Latin. It is ashame to seperate people according to race though.
It’s a publicity stunt and, clearly, it’s working. I don’t feel this sets us back any. I don’t feel that we’ve really moved forward from 40 years ago. We’re just a little nicer in face-to-face interaction and only when we have to be. And that isn’t just on part of the white folk. There’s clearly the greatest conflict between whites and blacks. My money is on the blacks to win because it would more “PC” than the whites. I also don’t believe that there is an ounce of “reality” in “reality TV”. From my experience, it should, by all means, be the asians…but we all know that’ll never happen.

The idea, although shakey, doesn’t really bother me. I remember when they separated the teams by gender, and they didn’t call it sexism. I just think people are going to make a huge deal about it. Because, think about it, they’re not just singling out one race. There’s four competing against eachother. But the public is going to piss and moan that they’re getting picked on and the government will do something about it that wont really help anyway. And if the government does do something, the whites wont get anything, we get screwed out of everything.
Like for instance, my mom wotrks in a factory. theres an indian (from India for those who think i mean Native American) guy who works there too. He is somewhat lazy. So my mom tells him to do his job like everyone else. He runs to management and says he’s being discriminated.
That’s not fair, you see. his job is more secure because of his race. but my mom could get fired just for telling him to do what he’s getting paid for.
So in conclusion. I think all races are equal. Black, Hispanic, Asian, Indian, AND White. There is no such thing as minority. Maybe that’s what survivor is trying to point out. The Human race is just that, one race is no more powerful that the other.

I don’t see why people are looking at this as racist. It’s just a new twist in a dying show to get more viewers. People tend to blow things WAY out of proportion and shoat racist! at the littlest things. That said, I don’t think race will really play an issue in how they play the game.

but now it’s confirmed that whoever created that is a jackass.

I agree with all of what you said, so why are you perpetuating what Survivor is doing by asking the same question that they are trying to answer?

I am amazed that anybody watches survivor to begin with. Reality TV lacks one thing, Reality.
I am multiracial…fitting 3 of the categories listed. No asian here. But I represent predominantly blacks…and as such…they may have an advantage physically, but only if they can work together. That may be an issue, because of typical territorial b.s. and jealousy…so it really depends on that as to whether anyone will succeed. It’s stupid though. You know that we are gonna hear about his like we’re now hearing about the JonBenet shit again, and the loser wanting his 15 minutes.
White: Power struggle.
Black: Rob everything.
Latino: Rob everything.
Asian: Win with calculated precision.

3) I think that each race has about the same advantage. It’s not about the race; it’s about the people they choose. The concept is ridiculous because a couple people do not represent an entire race. Gosh. And I thought that we, collectively, as a country, stopped seeing race…
Race doesn’t matter, the physical ability matters. Are you racist or something?
If it’s in a hot country blacks have the biological advantage because they have better melanine in their skin. As for the little competitions they have each episode, race doesn’t matter because the brain of a person of one race is as good as the brain of those of any other.
That’s clearly Survivor’s lamebrained attempt at a publicity stunt, so in retaliation I will watch Survivor only half as much as I do now. Unfortunately, zero divided by two is still zero.

It totally depends on the skills of the individual. When people need to survive, amazing things happen. And the fact that they were even considering that means that somebody ought to get fired.
