  • Striking

A school district close to my area is not having school because the teachers are striking.

Is it appropriate for teachers to strike?

  • kinda. depend on the cause.

  • Never!

  • depends*

but i mean, they’re letting students down by not providing an education.

    that ain’t cool.

  • If there’s a terrible injustice being done to them, it’s not fair to force them to suffer, although it isn’t fair to make children miss out on their educations, either.

  • Detroit is striking too.

I guess it depends on the situation.  If the kids aren’t going to get a proper education because of the conditions of the school (class size, equipment, etc) then I guess because they’re trying to improve the conditions.  If they just want more money then no.

  • What missing out? Those kids are probablly thanking the teachers, they get a few more days of summer.

Eh, if the teachers are un-happy then they have the right to strike.

  • but they need to be paid correctly though.

  • I think that teachers get screwed in the whole scheme of things. What they do (or at least some do) is priceless, and yet it’s one of the worst paying professions out there. They can inspire and plant seeds of hope to those lost…not too many professions can have that effect on people. You know?

  • They’re paid to be teachers, I don’t think they should be striking to get their point across.

I mean, you become a teacher to take care of the students. If you refuse to educate them, chances are you have a better shot at getting fired before getting what you want, considering there’s so many new people in the educational field looking for jobs.

  • depends on the cause. . .

  • In most states its illegal but they don’t enforce the law due to the political power of teachers unions. No it wrong, it would be another story if they actually lost money when they went on strike like every other union worker. But for teachers a strike is just a paid vacation.

  • they’re in a union and they should be allowed to strike, however they district should send in scabs to teach the kids with lower wages and no benefits. Sending in scabs goes against everything that I stand for, but you cannot sacrifice a childs education.

  • Unions aren’t appropriate! Nor are any body of people who either choose to, or are coerced to join them!

  • Sure, as long as they prove their worth, industry, innovation and intelligence. That is, if they: a) Choose a proper cause for which to fight and accomplish their goal and b) use the occurance as a learning experience for their students once matters are settled, then I figure they deserve it.

  • if by chance it will better the education that will be given, then yes.

  • There are at least three schools in my area that strike year after year. I don’t think it’s good for the kids, but the teachers should be getting paid, too.

  • depends on the reason. But i think they should think about the kids here….. the kids need school. in order to have school, you have to have teachers.
they should still be teaching and what not and having school. but teachers really need to be treated way better than they are now.

  • Its appropriate for any group of workers to strike as long as it is for a proper cause.

  • If the point of the stike is to improve the students education (whether through better books, smaller class sizes, etc.) then definitely yes.

  • Is it appropriate for teachers to be underpaid the way they are?

  • ABSOLUTELY. Teachers are the most underpaid thankless job in this USA. They are molding our society’s future yet we pay mega millions to movie actors who don’t do 1/100th of the good work that a true teacher does.

  • yes! they are hard-workers just like everyone else….mind you that they are highly underpaid!

  • Hell yeah it’s appropriate! I’m studying to become a teacher and if I or we need to go on strike, then so be it. We all know that teachers are underpaid and are not appreicated as much. We are the foundation for children’s education!

  • I don’t understand how so many people can flat out say “no.”

Teachers need money to live just like any other people. I understand that education is important and all, but their ability to sustain a somewhat good quality of life for themselves should come first. If income is preventing them from that, then I think striking is an appropriate action to get their point across.

  • I used to teach in a private school … no union.  I and my fellow faculty members were grossly underpaid.  I couldn’t strike, so I had to take a different job in order to support my family.  The students won’t ever get me back.  At least at the end of a strike, the teachers can go back to their students.

  • If the kids are assholes maybe

  • No. Most teachers are so crappy that they don’t deserve more pay.

  • yes it is.

  • Depends on why they are striking.  If the schools are fire traps and the walls are full of asbestos, then they should go ahead and strike.  But I don’t get the whole “I’m not gonna work until you give me more money” thing.  If someone is refusing to work, I don’t think they should get more money, even if they are a teacher.

In general though, I think good teachers should be making far more money than they are now, and they shouldn’t have to spend their own money to provide basic supplies for class.

  • I think it can be.
If they have a good reason.
But is it fair how underpaid they are?
They are so influential to our world.

  • It depends on the circumstances; what cause the teachers are striking for.

Maybe a strike is all that is going to make the school district leaders wake up and realize they need to do something.

  • Absolutely not. There should be a mechanism in place to ensure teachers do not strike.

  • sometimes it’s necessary, but it’s sad that the kids educationally suffer from it.

  • It is a shame when a teacher can qualify for food stamps. Should teachers be paid like cheap labor? Should teachers have to be submitted to nonsense from students because it is their right to free speech? Should teachers have to work in the summer as well just to make enough money to subsidize their teaching habit?

  • I don’t think so. Strikes rarely ever seem to be appropriate.

  • Teachers know going in that the pay isn’t well and that they are doing it for the kids. Unless is is uber-drastic they should hold true to the MOTHERFUCKIN kids!

  • No, it was weird when our teachers went on strike last year.

  • Underpaid? What a farce, the national average pay, according to the NEA for a teacher is $46,752 per year. That brakes down to $25 per hour, if they work 10 hours a day. That does not including world class benefits. That is damn good money for a job that supposedly no one does just for the money.

  • depends on the reason that they’re striking for….

                                                   -KrIsTiN-

  • I believe that teachers sort-of should be able to strike, but that hurts the kids. After all, it’s a law that children have to go to school. First, they should try to negotiate. Then, I think teachers should find some other way to protest. Perhaps they can all ignore their boss completely when he/she talks to them or say mean stuff, put posters and papers all over the school that say how they need more money, carry picket signs, and have huge protests all over school property. There are ways to protest that don’t hurt students.

  • While they are out striking, we are sitting at home plotting revenge.

Not only for a snotty summer, but because we don’t have the chance to go back to school to gossip. Not that I do that er anything.

  • Everyone has the right to stand up and fight for justice.

  • Professionals don’t strike. You can’t have your cake and eat it. If teachers are “labor” then they should be able to strike. If teachers are professionals then they should act like it and not use the tactics of “labor.”

  • they’re all about the kids right? then why do this to them?
we had a similar incident 5 years back.

  • Withdrawal of labour is permissable if the cause is a severe disadvantage to the teachers or their pupils or their school.

  • What are they striking about?

  • That happened to me my sophomore year of high school; we started school two weeks late, it really sucked.  They have the right to strike, but not at the expense of the students.

  • teachers are underpaid because they only work 9 months a year.
they can strike if they want, the kids don’t mind missing school.

  • no b/c ultimately, the children are at stake here.
To be a teacher…. you must have a passion for teaching. You must love people and you believe teachers make a difference.
To strike, to put yourself first, for more money, benefits, etc…. they are hurting the children…not to mention parents who dont have sitters on-call and flexible jobs.
A teacher is almost like a parent, you cannot decide to turn on and off your role. My paarents told me in Vietnam…teachers are very respectable and very loved. They love their students and students love them right back. And if a teacher passes away…the whole student body will be deepy affected, mentally. My parents criticize how students in America dont really care about teachers.

Back to the subject–Teachers should be bright enough to realize strike is something they cannot do. It affects the students tremendously, they are… what is priority, right?

  • As a previous teacher, I say absolutely YES! People don’t know how teachers are mistreated by parents, students, and school boards. If they haven’t walked a mile in a teacher’s shoes, they shouldn’t pass judgement.

  • I agree San to an extent. As a nurse, I’ve walked as many miles in much diriter shoes.. But imagine a world where nurses striked.. Its as scary as teachers. What is needed is for all helper professions, teachers, nurses, and the like to become more positive and vocal with our cares, concerns, and worries. Take it to the media, parent meetings, churches, etc to get the word out what we do, and how we do it. As a part time teacher, I can see both sides, but think that to make the children suffer is not worth it in the end. Just my view =)

  • Of course its appropriate for teachers to strike.

Crummy salary and mistreatment from the district. It equals a strike.

  • Most of the posts I have seen here disagreeing with the teachers’ strike are from young adults who are not teachers themselves. They seem to hold the belief that this is a moral issue; the teachers having a moral obligation not to strike for the sake of their students.

Perhaps 40k (though this is only an average) a year is adequate for a single person, but many teachers have families themselves. Whose children are really at stake here?

Disregarding the previous point however, non-tenured teachers -are- labor, and many of them belong to a teachers’ union. Those belonging to the schools administration are professionals. Teachers have a right to strike if their working conditions precipitate it.

  • Teachers should not be underpaid in the first place. would you underpay your pizzia guy or your football star. but ppl are too quick to hand the pizza guy his 5 dollar tip and the football star his 5mill$ paycheck. Teachers bring math, history, science, english, culture to children so they dont grow up ignorant. but where is the money going to. the football stars and the rap moguls(to name a couple). and damn straight they have the right to strike. kuz it aint right.

  • too all the ppl that said that teachers make good money, the Teachers at my skool make little money. maybe up in Malibu, its a diff. story.

  • In some cases. We have many teacher strikes in our area. Sometimes they’re for good reason. Other times, not so much.

  • When I was in eighth grade, the teachers in my school district went on strike. I think they do have the right to strike, but it can seriously affect the schoolyear for their students. They have substitutes coming in and out and nobody learns anything and everyone just goofs off. And sure, that’s part of being a kid, who doesn’t love it when the teacher’s away? But it sucks when you go into the next grade and you realize you are somewhat unprepared.

But I do understand where those teachers were coming from back then, and I can understand it now. They don’t get paid enough for all the work they do, and all the shit they put up with. They deserve more, but sometimes you just can’t win either way.

  • Is it appropriate for teachers to strike? as in strike the children? absolutely!

*for the tard who thinks this comment needs correcting: I get what he was really asking. I just like my way better.*

  • No; however, missed school days can be made up at the end of the year.

That’s what my school always does when we lose class due to unforseen circumstances, like typhoons.

  • Absolutely.  If they didn’t have that right, we could very easily walk right over them.  It’s kinda how capitalism works.

  • most certainly. if our educators aren’t being treated right, they should make a statement. the parents should pick up the slack.

  • At my crazy school in the UK the professors went on strike (actually it is a national union I think and effected all the uni’s in Scotland) but they did not do it at  the beginning of term, they did it when it was time to grade final exams… which they didn’t do and continued to get paid by the silly uni.  Meanwhile students were not graduating because they had no exam scores!  It was the strangest strike I have ever seen.

anyway, unions only have power if they can strike, teachers deserve better pay, kids will recover from a few missed days of school… but here is the thing.  Maybe teachers shouldn’t be in unions, maybe they should get paid on merritt rather than pure seniority like the rest of the professional world and maybe instead of just saying we think schools should be better we should happily have our taxes raised to pay for it.

  • Yes, if they have no choice. Not that my teachers ever striked when I was in school. Damnit.

  • it does seem like holding a community hostage…

  • Teachers don’t usually strike because they want more money. One of the biggest benefits of being a teacher is the excellent health benefits, which is a big part of the contract that has to be renewed every so often. When school districts try to lessen the health benefits to save money, the teachers don’t like that (the salary is already lower than many other college-degree-required jobs, but what happens if there’s a terrible illness that strikes the family? If they don’t have the good insurance, it’s going to be nearly impossible to pay for that.) My Dad is a teacher, and has found that many teachers are willing to sacrifice larger pay increases in response to keeping the better health benefits. In the end, it’s worth it.

  • not your area too…teachers by us in a college striked…
    Kelly

  • that goes to show you the don’t care about the kids….

  • sure it is, it has always been an underappreciated and definately underpaid job!!

  • hahaha…
why are they? why shouldnt they?

  • If its a major issue and very important. The ones who are out in the cold is the innocent children who want to learn.

  • It really depends. Teachers are grossly underpaid here, yet they do not strike … I feel they do let the students down when they do.

    -Guru on the Hill

  •  most school teachers are paid crap. their allowed to get angry over worn out books and oversized classes once in a while.

  • I don’t see why it wouldn’t be appropriate for teachers to strike. Teaching is, after all, a JOB.

  • mehh no school ^.^

    xX-Nicole-Xx

  • Nobody messes with the union. I would say that if the union is not happy then one should expect a strike. Some of our greatest advances in the job industry were settled to end strikes. If they did not want teachers to strike then they would have seen to settling the issue before the teachers had to strike. Because the teachers are striking, they can be assured the issue is being heard.

  • We’re not having school because Tropical Storm Ernesto will be moving through about 2 AM. Now you tell me… is that appropriate?

    :P

  • are they striking for a good reason?

pay? unfair treatmean from higher authorities? cruddy job?

  • Is is appropriate to stick employees in situations where they are used until used up, burned out, then thrown out like yesterday’s trash because their only recourse is to find another sweat-shop?

I’m opposed to unions, I’m opposed to striking, but I’m also opposed to the mentality of business and government that all the matters is money.

  • Sure. Teachers are people too.

  • Oh yes it is. Teachers are underpaid and overworked. Given the conditions of the classroom, the lack of respect from teachers and administration, from students….they deserve better and we owe them. They deserve to be able to strike until we DO give it to them.

  • depends on why they are striking!

  • no

  • teachers have the right to strike… BUT… the school board should always a backup plan in that case… we have fire drills, tornado drills, bomb drills… but nothing in regards to where to send the kids in the case that teachers will leave… even though that happens more often than any fire, tornado or bomb IVE seen

  • Striking is an immature way of solving problems, akin to throwing a tantrum. It should be done only in cases of absolute necessity, when the ones being “striked” against refuse to listen. Instead of striking, maybe those employees should look over their demands and see what they can do without. Have the management do the same. Then find a third party negociator. It’s a far more adult thing to do.

Teachers should strike during the summer. To me, striking during the school year shows a lack of respect for education, students, and parents.

  • Is it appropriate to be so underpaid, so under equiped to meet the growing demands, to work in conditions that are more akin to a battlefield than an institution of learning… it is little wonder we have to import educated people, we can’t produce them ourselves anymore… the institution… Education… is rotting and nobody wants to fix it, nobody wants to accept it, ignore it, throw more money at it… oh yeah, we can’t… the war is more important… it’s the terrorists!!!! They’ve already won… =(

  • But then again, most teachers unions are against education anyway. They just want to push their agendas. For example, the largest teachers union, the NEA, voted that academic standards nationwide should be LOWERED and that both teachers and students ahould have less accountablity for their actions.

  • well, for one, it works, since it got your attention.
some unions force their members to strike.
personally, my contract and allegiance is with the school and with the students. I could and would not do it.

  • The rusty hinge gets the oil…
    IOW, Yes. :)

  • only if they are not being paid well.

  • Sure; most public schools don’t teach kids anything important anyway, at least in my area.

  • If the teachers are badly underpaid then yes it is okay. Teachers are paid such crap wages anyway and then they aren’t provided the resources they need for their classroom. My sister-in-law spends hundreds of dollars of her own money just for classroom supplies and I know lots of other teachers do that too. That is just ridiculous.

  • Teachers have the right to be paid for their services and to work with a fair contract.  It is the board who lets down the children by not compensating the teachers fairly.  So, yes.

  • NO STRIKES!  Yes, teachers deserve more money, but they should go about getting it another way.  The students in this country are stupid enough, without the teachers helping.  I have been a teacher and would never agree to that.  However, I also hate unions.

  • They should be paid more, so yes.

  • If they have a purpose of the strike, for example not coming back until better books are supplied or something like that, then yes. That’s in favor of the kid’s education.

Plus, most teachers are seriously underpaid. I mean, sure, it’s not thinking about the youth of America!! But the youth of American is down the tube anyway, and these people need more money.

  • It depends on for what reason they are striking.

  • Spare the rod and spoil the child. ;)

Yeah, I know, not that kind of striking.

I think it’s they’re right to strike, if they feel it’s necessary, but it is as the expense of a students education. I’m sure the student doesn’t mind, and a day or two wouldn’t matter too much, but if it went on for more than a week, I’d be concerned about the students’ academics.

  • Even if the teachers are striking for a reason, just think of the students. there is a strike going on near me too, bishop shanahan high school in PA, and the students aren’t starting back to school until october. But, this means that the school year will go into the next summer, cutting out a large portion of their vacation. In one area in Delaware, the teachers were striking for so long that all of the students had to attend another school, doubling the number of students in each classroom.

  • I think all  of those “teachers” should educate themselves by trying to live the kind of life I live right now…they would never complain about how their lives are again:).

  • It is just as appropriate for them as any other worker. What kind of question is this??

  • They are doing a job and they should have the same rights as anyone else.

  • Teachers are the lowest paid professionals. Why are they striking?

  • It kinda depends if its worth striking for

  • why are they striking?

  • Of course, why not? If they aren’t being treated fairly, any worker has the right to strike.

  • YES! Of course it is! Are you kidding me?

My mom’s a teacher at my school, and our school district is having some problems, so I know [almost] first hand about this.

The teacher’s union is supposed to get a contract every three years. In my district, it’s been five. It’s not fair. At all. One woman was working for three years, was supposed to get tenor, but didn’t get it, and was fired. It’s completely unfair for the teachers.

In my case, the students are with the teachers, so it’s not disturbing us in any way. We all believe something should be done. These teachers dedicate their entire career into teaching us, and if something’s not fair for them, it shoudl be changed.

I’m just surprised to see how many people on the first page said no.

If something is unjust, people have the right to strike. Doesn’t matter if it’s teachers or whoever else.

    Peace.

  • To the person that said.. “I think all  of those “teachers” should educate themselves by trying to live the kind of life I live right now…they would never complain about how their lives are again:).”

What are you talking about? I don’t know anything about your life, but teacher’s aren’t only in this world to give us homework and grade us. Most teachers get involved in their department and LOVE teaching because they love seeing us, the students, grow up into smart individuals.

It’s not like they have absolutely nothing to complain about. While we’re spending 90% of our summers at the beach and complaining about a stupid book or two we have to read, teachers are spending most of their summer making lesson plans to help us learn.

  • i think that for the job they do they are really under-represented and underpaid, and i think they need better rights. it’s just sad that they have to strike to do so, because the kids will have to go to school well into the summer. it happened to me once when i was younger and i hated it.

  • No, it’s immature and results in the direct lack of education in children.

  • They have to put up with KIDS and TEENAGERS, then they grade for hours and have a very low salary.

Yeah, they have a fucking right to protest.

  • depends on the cause

they have a right as much as any work force

but if the cause is pathetic….no

  • nurses, doctors, garbage men strike.

  • Not really – it effects the student’s educations. They’re underpaid and overworked though, what else are they supposed to do?

  • we went through that last year…  underpaid teachers?  ARE YOU KIDDING ME?  You don’t live in this district then!  The AVERAGE pay in this district is $62,000/year…  no.. they don’t deserve to strike…

  • Is it appropriate for teachers to be underpaid the way they are?
    Posted 8/28/2006 at 11:36 PM by put_your_rain_coat_on

    Exactly.

  • why are they striking?

  • If teh conditions are harsh enough. But what will the kids do?? Is it appropriate for them to strike as well? If it’s not, then it’s not appropriate for teachers to. I mean, if the kids were in high school and knew what they were striking for was a good cause.

  • they can’t in my state.

  • Depends on the cause.

  • as long as the students can strike back.

  • “as long as the students can strike back.”

Whaaaat?! It’s not like the teachers are striking against the students… right?

  • depends what r they striking for

  • I believe that if they have a viable reason as to why they are striking then they have every right in the world to protest. After all they’re human, and have a right to stand up for what they believe in. And won’t it be a good example for their students to know that even if they are in a leadership position they still have the opportunity to stand up for themselves. Here is a quote that I mustered up that is appropriate for this discussion.

“If your not a toilet, don’t let people feed you crap. If your not road kill don’t let people run you over! Your human so act like it.”

    ~Lynds

  • I am really tired of teachers already………and it has only been the first week of school for my kids. I’m especially tired of coaches.  That’s a whole different blog though, isn’t it?!

  • If it’s because they are in need of something then yeah, sure.  It is horrible how kids’ education has to be put to rest momentarily because of it.  Compromise?  If there was one then we wouldn’t be having this problem, eh?

  • no it’s not. what do you think they’re teaching kids by doing that?
if they don’t like something, they can suck it up or quit.

  • “no it’s not. what do you think they’re teaching kids by doing that?
if they don’t like something, they can suck it up or quit.”

They’re teaching kids to fight for what’s right and fair.

  • not during the school year…

  • well i dont know.anyone can strike.

but not have any school???I mean you have to make it up but i would refuse to.Why make up school because the teahers didnt want to work???

I mean they have a right too but i dont think they should.Parents dont want their kids to not go to school

  • God yes.

In Texas (where i live) it is actually illegal for teachers to have unions and strike as a union. (in the interest of eduction)

Teachers should be allowed to strike. Also the qualifications for teachers should be higher. That way they get paid more.

And if they get paid more, they are better teachers and know their stuff better. I think all high-school level teachers should have at least a masters degree. And should be paid accordingly.

  • duh. one by me is striking too, and the kids don’t have to go to school.  i heard that they have to make it up in the summer, though.

  • I was a teacher for 24 years, all of it in middle school, the whole bag of tricks.  I started in 1981 for $11,000 a year.  I had to cope with school violence, overwhelming needs for special education that could not be met, throw-away kids that nobody loved and would do any terrible thing to get attention…  And you know, I would have paid them to let me do it.  Now, I am old.  I am diabetic.  I can’t do the job any more, and so they threw me away like an old ragbag, six years before I’m eligible for retirement.  Do I think teachers should be allowed to strike?  I always said the kids are too important.  Firemen and policemen shouldn’t go on strike, so why should I?  Stupid, stoopid me!

  • Striking what? Matches? Children? Bad grammar? I HAVE TO KNOW!!!

Seriously though, my wife’s a teacher and I know they put up with quite a bit. My opinion largely depends on why they’re striking, but I’d sooner support a teacher’s strike than one in pro sports. Fortunately, no teachers – pugilistic or otherwise – have asked me for mine so I guess it doesn’t matter.

  • Not really, but what else can they do?

  • yes.
their underpaid and to say they shouldnt is degradeing to a profession which is hugely important in any developed, or developing nation.
give then the respect they deserve. without them, you would be no where.
