  • Democrats and Taxes

The Democrats are expected to take over the House and potentially the Senate in the upcoming election.  President Bush is saying that the Democrats will raise your taxes.

Do you think the Democrats are likely to raise taxes if they have the majority in the House and the Senate?

  • don’t they always say they’ll lower taxes and then raise them anyways???

    *hugs*

  • oh my goodness…I don’t think I’ve ever been first here before…

    *faints*

  • Yes. But I agree with the first comment, either side would do it.

  • No, that’s republicans.

Yes, they will, and I think its a great idea- we’re in the middle of a war, we have a huge debt- we need that income, we need THOSE taxes to help us out. To help us pay for armor, pay for the war and lower our debt. Its only historically and economically correct.

  • Same with the two comments above my first.

Here in New York Pataki (A Republican) has raised taxes a great deal. Now we have Spitzer to look foward too.

  • hey dan, i’m home today if u feel like chatting :)

  • my family is already struggling with putting food on the table…  7 ppl in my family…  it sucks…

  • democrats….ugh

  • OH HELL YEAH! They’re all into Socialism. Why wouldn’t they raise taxes? Someone’s gotta help feed Uncle Sam’s endless appetite for money.

  • Both parties raise taxes. Niether is more or less to blame for that.

  • Yes.  BUT…it’d be a refreshing change in other areas.  Plus, with no war, we will see a decrease in gas, and not just a dip because of the election.  And when you save $1,000/year on gas, who cares if that same $1,000 goes to your property tax, if we are getting peace, and competence in its stead?!

  • Democrat or Republican, taxes will still be raised.

  • Not neccesarily….  but I think the most wealthiest people will see an increase.  (They have been getting the breaks recently under the “trickle down” theory that has seen a resurgence – or whatever they are calling it now days.) If the Iraq war continues we will have no choice but to pay higher taxes no matter which party is in power.  War is expensive business.  (either that or totally trash domestic programs that many people have come to depend on in time of need)

  • supposably, so.  I prollably agrees

  • How insensitive of me.  After, reading DramaQTPie‘s blog, I would like to retract my statement for being a narrow minded idealist.  Let me just answer the question…yes!

  • As opposed to the moron that raised the deficit to the highest it’s ever been, started a war that my taxes are paying for…uh…no, I don’t see it happening. Fear tactics once again.

  • probably raise taxes, but cut down on spending as well.

  • I’m disinclined to believe that either the Democrats or the Republicans will do anything if elected to a majority in Congress.

  • Top 20Yeah!!hehe…Have a good new week Dan

  • It always happens anyway.
I mean come on, democrats and republicans hate each other.
They’ll say anything to make each other look bad.

  • Democrats always raise the taxes and cut back on the military.

  • i dont know. all i know is democrats are dumb. we live in a REPUBLIC, not a democracy, so why be a democrat? not too smart

  • maybe we should be asking if they’ll lower the deficit. worry more about the price of health insurance or lack there of instead of gay marriage.  here’s another one maybe they won’t give the armed forces the lowest pay raise in 20 years.  just a couple of things to consider without even touching the civil liberty infringements.  give me a figgin break.

  • yes. absolutely!

  • Hmm, well we can’t go running deficits forever.

  • It doesn’t matter who gets in.  Either way they’ll raise taxes.  That just seems to be a given.  The congressmen need to in order to pay for those raises they give themselves.  Argh!

  • Wouldn’t Bush just veto any legislation to raise taxes?  It really doesn’t matter what the legislative branch wants if the executive doesn’t agree.

  • Not any more than the fucking republicans already have… but at least they won’t be giving tax cuts to the rich!

  • yhjkl;’

  • probably. But, I think they may have another thing commin.

  • Taxes need to be raised.  Whom they’re levied on matters.

  • I agree with fluteplaya in the pit.

  • That’s a given. We are living in a DEMOCRACY, not a republic. Your blind arguments do not compute.
Also, the country in general is becoming gradually less-polarized party-wise, which i approve.
“All into socialism?” Do your research. Cough.
And I hear that right-wingers are generally smarter than left-wingers.

I think that, as long as we make the government more efficient (or try to) and make it smaller (hopefully the new Democrats can do that, finally; neocons actually made it larger than ever before) I don’t mind paying a bit more taxes. After all, we need to clean up the debt by the Bush administration… and we need the money to do so.

  • It doesn’t matter.

  • considering the fact that the democrats passed a budget surplus over to the republicans who put us back into trillion dollar national debt, it doesn’t seem that the republicans have given the democrats much choice.

i won’t even mention the daily financial cost of the war in iraq, let alone the other costs of that war.

under the democratic administration, my husband and i were financially more stable than under the back-to-back admininistrations of the republicans.  many of my friends can say the same thing.  the tax cuts proffered by the republicans were so pitiful that they didn’t even hit my radar, and yet the effect on our national debt was staggering.  if a reversal of those tax cuts (which technically would be a raise in my taxes) were enacted and it were to have a corresponding effect on the national debt (as in reducing it), i would not kick.

  • Democrats ALWAYS raise taxes.  That is how they make us (the taxpayers)  pay for all those socialist programs that Democrats love.

This is the way I look at it…..Voters who vote for a Democrat are saying to me and my family that they want government to take more money from MY family.   Those voters want my money.

How about instead of government collecting the money for them via the Democrats, those who vote for Democrats should  personally knock on my door and say to me….”I want you to give more money out of your paycheck to me and others like me.”  Oh but wait, they  haven’t got the guts to do that.  Let those Democrat politicians do it for them.

  • It’s likely.

  • The president is the one who has ot sign thier legislation. That is why i support a split government. Its bad to let both parties control both the white house and congress. The democrats cna try to raise em, i dont want higher taxes but nor do i want huge deficit…..

  • I don’t mind raised taxes if they’re put to good use. Let him talk.

  • maybe….but so did the Republicans-its natural, as prices go up so do taxes.

  • Do fat kids like cake?

  • I think it’s a desperate attempt to get the masses to fall back towards the “right” side.

Anapplegathering that is the stupidest thing I have ever heard.

  • what party doesn’t raise taxes when they gain control?

  • $8 TRILLION IN DEBT!  Suck it up or move to Canada.

  • yep

  • Yes, and I sure as hell hope they do. The tax cuts (and the war) are the reason we are so goddamn in debt.

  • I don’t mind if they do … we could use more taxes anyway.

    -Guru on the Hill

  • wow, i also enjoy giving my money to the government, to democrats, even though it goes to waste in those perfectly useless new programs that they employ!!!! LOOOVEEEE IT!!!! more taxes!!!!

wow, people are either turning super liberal and really cant budget, or they just lost about 20 iq points

  • YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yes, but they’ll end the war, too so your taxes won’t be going back into the pockets of rich polititians/CEOs. Maybe they’ll improve education or something. Taxes aren’t evil.

  • Raises in taxes are inevitable. Anyone will do it.

  • lol. It does not matter what party is in power, the economy determines when and who raises taxes. Remember back with Bush Senior “Read my Lips: No New Taxes”. Its the economy not the party, in general.

  • From an economical standpoint, raising taxes would make for more capital to spend on government funded projects and people on the welfare and social security systems.  But regular joes who don’t understand how tax money is used will gripe and groan about it.  The government needs money too.  They cannot just print up a couple thousand $100 bills and use that.  They have to have the real capital to back it up, so that’s when they raise taxes to make sure they have the resources there that are needed to run the country/state/county/city, whatever they need it for.

  • i dont know. all i know is democrats are dumb. we live in a REPUBLIC, not a democracy, so why be a democrat? not too smart

    That was funny.
Yea, I expect them to raise taxes, pull the troops out, and then wonder why America regrets it later like we regret pulling out of Vietnam

  • uhm.. let me think about that one
    YES
    = )

  • Likely. But that’s not to say that Rebpublicans have never raised taxes, or squandered – er I mean spent government funds on unwieldy expensive programs coughIraqcough. Dems might raise taxes, but repubs cut programs that help people to finance their ventures and make slight cuts to middle class taxes and big cuts to high income people’s taxes.

The taxing issue is a huge smokescreen with Republicans.

People act like taxing is akin to ax murdering.

Look, we are all part of a community here. Its necessary to pay taxes, and grumbling about paying taxes for programs to help our fellow citizens always smacked to me of utter selfishness. Won’t we all eventually benefit from programs like Social Security? Like it or not our government programs (including our precious Homeland Security) are funded by taxes. Taxes build roads and schools. Taxes keep Medicaid and Social Security going. What is wrong with contributing to this country by paying taxes?

  • Dos it really matter who wins? Taxes are taxes. Our nation is growing.

Then again, I’m just an arrogant teen.

  • They probably won’t change my taxes, but I wouldn’t mind if they raised taxes on the uber-wealthy. On a different note, I don’t necessarily mind higher taxes if they actually go to getting good things done.

  • No, they’ll just raise taxes for the rich. Democrats are the middle classes’ party.

  • maybe.  we won’t know unless it happens, now will we?

  • Um, they kinda have to, seeing as the Republicans keep giving tax cuts to the rich and then spending too much money elsewhere.

  • I won’t really give a damn if they can stop the bloody war.

  • I dunno, but I wouldn’t be surprised. And you know it won’t be for the war.

  • Addendum:

“tax cuts to the rich”- sorry, but it ain’t only to the rich. My family’s always struggled financially, and we got quite a few breaks. Thanks, Bush!

my problem’s not with taxes, it’s with taxes used in stupid ways. Because governments tend to use money in stupid ways, I don’t like heavy taxation. Here in Chicago, there’s a lot of good things taxes could go for- a lot of broken down buildings, a lot of torn up streets, a lot of people with really screwed up lives, and people who like screwing up lives. But they usually don’t go there. They go towards tearing up and fixing streets that are fine as they are (so the officials can keep their budgets high). They’re poured into education, and who knows where all that’s gone? I know from experience, it doesn’t much help. In the same way money is poured into welfare, and it does help a few people, but for the most part it seems to have just pushed poor communities, in Chicago at least, further into the dust. It’s a fact of life in my mind that government officials do not know or else refuse to acknowledge how to spend money- Republicans too, but at least they sometimes hold to the conservative, common-sense, capitalist ideal- Democrats, never.

  • I highly doubt it. Hopefully they’ll raise minimum wage and do something about our carbon emissions.

  • Well yeah, we gotta help the Dems give free money to all those “less fortunate” people who are too lazy to get a damn job and would rather sit back and live off my paycheck.

  • Like the Democrats have never engaged in a stupid war, remember a little conflict in Vietnam?

  • Yes they will raise taxes. And unfortionately, if Democrats take over both they’ll ultimately screw up our nation even more than it already is, because Democrats are more of “polling politicians” going with what’s popular and expedient, instead of what is the right thing to do. Thank God that right now we at least have a president who is willing to do what he believes is right, even if his own popularity goes down as a result.

  • The democrats aren’t going to win.  That’s just the media setting them up to cry “fixed election” when they lose.  Of course they would raise taxes, IF they got control.

  • Da!

  • Doesnt matter, its all about who has the most money to shove into some fund at the time….were all just pawns in this game called government.

  • For the wealthy, yes.

  • Probably.

    Silly democrats.

  • But really, it’s not just them.

Tax increases seem to be inevitable.

  • No one group is blameless in the tax area.  No one can predict what disaster or what “event” might happen that will empty the coffers.  No one can say which bill will pass so that “funding” is needed in that area.  It could be the war now, it could be a result of future wars, it could be prescriptions/health, we just don’t know.  The only thing we can be sure of is that taxes are a huge part of our history and they are here to stay.

  • Yes, they will, any way they can. Jerks.

  • Yes. Is that so bad? Or we could just keeping adding to the deficit and hope we can steal enough from Iraq and Afghanistan to repay it all.

  • probably, but so would republicans.

    Agreed and amen.

  • democrats have never met a tax hike that they didn’t like

  • Taxes are raised all the time, it probably would not matter whos in office.

  • The Dems definitely would.

  • Democrats will raise your awareness to the UNNECESSARY SLAUGHTER OF AMERICANS IN IRAQ. Maybe they’ll raise taxes too.

  • after all the raisings of taxes in the last six years?  I don’t think they will.

    Cowboy

  • duh. they’re democrats, right?

  • You know, somebody has to pay for all of the rediculous overspending that has taken place under the Bush administration. What alternative is there?

  • Without a doubt.

  • i think that having taxes are better than lowering taxes. (since bush did have this thing proposed where he wanted to freeze taxes when they were low so that one couldnt bring them back up, which i think is just stupid)

well i mean according to my professor, but you cant raise taxes too much because then you’re shit out of luck as he says.  i mean, supposedly the lower the taxes the more expensive things are, the higher the taxes (yet not ridiculously high) the reasonable priced products will be, if you catch my drift. damn it, it’s like there has to be balance, to low you’re screwed, to high then well someones going to be mad, so i dont think it’ll go too high, but wtf do i know, im just in college.

hopefully that made sense, i have exams coming up, so my brain is just about to— bleh.

  • oops, when is said “were low so that one couldnt bring them back up” i meant no one could bring them back up.

and besides i believe they totally dropped that idea, so ignore that statement its not going to happen either way.

  • Democrat or Republican, taxes will still be raised.

  • Government is already to a point that it would take a majority of GOOD PEOPLE to change the increase in spending and taxes. Republican or democrat really shouldn’t matter. If you look at the ideas of the founding fathers, good men were what they trusted to vote, not the people. Originaly, there was supposed to be a group of good people(the electoral college) that were selected because of their wisdom and THEY, not the majority, were supposed to vote for who would be president. Good people make for good government. Degenerate people make for what we have now and we have no one to blame but ourselves.
