Hi, this is mightymarce and I’m guest blogging for Dan today. Here goes:
There’s been some controversy lately in the blogosphere over celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton. Perez (openly gay himself) has taken it upon himself to “out” gay celebrities. First it was Lance Bass, who finally came out publicly this fall after repeated posts about Bass’s sexuality led to rampant rumors and speculation. Since then, Perez has forced T.R. Knight and Neil Patrick Harris to come “out of the closet.” (The phenomenon even has a nickname now… to be “lanced“)
Perez claims to simply be doing his job as a celebrity news outlet, stating “I don’t think it’s a bad thing. If you know something to be a fact, why not report it?… I know there is some controversy about outing people, but I also believe the only way we’re gonna have change is with visibility. And if I have to drag some people screaming out of the closet, then I will.”
Others view his actions as a blatant breach of privacy. Some feel that forcing homosexuals to go public before they’re ready is just a different form of oppression, and that it could harm their careers (for example, an actor who plays a heavily desired male on a show might not be as believable anymore if people find out he’s gay). Then there’s the hurt caused from friends and family finding out online, such as Lance Bass’s mother finding out that he was gay from online rumors.
So, here’s my question to you all:
Does Perez Hilton have a right to force gay celebrities out of the closet? Or is this an invasion of privacy?
