What Brings Us Together?
When I look at my site, we look like such a mix lot. I once went and read through some of my subscribers and realized that I have several subscribers with the numbers “666″ in their name. I also have a bunch that somehow fit the words “Jesus Freak” in their name. In other words, we are a mixed lot.
But someone messaged me recently with an observation. The person said something like “Dan, I don’t know if you realize this but in your photoblog if you say something sarcastic people are more likely to say something sarcastic in their comments.”
I started to think about that and I had an observation of my own. When I ran my “Best Commenter” contest, I tended to pick more people on the list that were sarcastic.
Now I know what brings us together. We are white, black, mexican, gay, heteorsexual, transsexual (you know who you are), southern, northern, Asian, token Jew (Mr. DMV), religious, atheist, agnostic, Democrat, Republican, pro-life, pro-choice, environmentally sensitive, environmentally careless, conservative and liberal.
But we have one thing that brings us together.
Are we all sarcastic?

There’s the somewhat bright, and then the somewhat not so bright people that come a commentin’. Usually the brighter ones are sarcastic, but i have seen some intelligent comments that actually from the heart and are straight-forward. But, mah point is, I don’t really think we’re all sarcastic because the not so bright’s usually always outweigh the brights when commenting? And i’m tipping the scale even further?

ok, in all seriousness–i think all people use this delightful tool known as “sarcasm,” just some more than others. but some people here give extremely serious responses…i don’t track each persons total history of comments, however, so i wouldn’t know if these serious responders also insert sarcasm to get their points across at their leisure. sarcasm is a great pleasure in life, though, so i would hope so!

I’m told constantly that I am the most sarcastic person ever. Actually, it drives my friends and family crazy. I’m not sure how sarcastic I’ve been when commenting on your site though. To answer the question, I’m everyone has their sarcastic side, but I’m pretty sure that’s not what connects us all.

lol. i think sarcasm can either be taken humorously or seriously. most of the time, i take it humorously. it’s strange when people from other countries don’t understand our jokes…and i realize that it’s because most of the time we are being “sarcastic”. maybe it’s so much of a simple concept that it’s hard to understand.

I, for one, am very sarcastic, but I’m not sure many of my comments are. A lot of times I refrain from being sarcastic on the internet in places people don’t know me very well, because I’m afraid they won’t get that I’m being sarcastic. It’s a much better tool for actual speaking.

I was just talking to an online friend recently, and we realised that we’re both really opinionated people. But we also realise that we’re only like that more when we’re talking online. We aren’t so opinionated (or sarcastic) in real life.

Also… I think a better term than sarcastic would be “highly opinionated”, and I tend to agree with Sesslerite…(about the argue/debate part- lol - I am not a total jerk).
Sarcastic? Yes. What I notice the most is the number of “college students” and “college graduates” that can’t type or spell worth a damn. Am I being sarcastic?

You also chose quite a few people who are plain ole jerks, as well as people who can only portray their points by using curse words in their posts. I found your choices quite interesting, but I felt like you left A LOT of people out who make good posts, and not one line answers that have nothing to do with the topic. Sarcasm is a nice touch a lot of people bring to the table though. I know for a fact, though, that not everyone picks up on the sarcasm (somebody left a post on my xanga telling me the failures of communism after I made a sarcastic remark about it).

I don’t think everyone’s sarcastic, I know whenever I actually comment your site I’m normally more serious…. but I think all the people subscribed to your site find the topics interesting, and you post enough entries that, if they can’t relate to one topic, they can relate to something else. That is my theory as to why you have such a vast audience. That and the fact that you tend to remain more neutral in most stories, even the most gruesome and sick ones you write about, you just talk about the topic without inserting much opinion.

I find a lot of comments on these posts to be quite shallow, actually. If your comment is less than 20 words, don’t expect me to have given it more than a passing glance. There’s just too little time in the day to spend reading a hundred or more one-liners.
Knowing whether a comment is sarcastic or not depends on knowing the person. One person can say something and be sarcastic; another person can say the very same thing and totally mean it. So, unless the comment is meaty enough to show more of that person’s heart, I don’t know (and don’t particuarly care) whether or not it is sarcastic.
Personally, I’m finding that TheTheologiansCafe to be lacking in actual theologians. Instead, we mostly get a bunch of knee-jerk reactions and a lot of “here’s how I feel.” Isn’t theology about the study of God? About who He is and what He wants? But instead we tend to be more about the study of ourselves and the promotion of our own amazingly profound opinions. If you’re going to offer your opinion, please be kind enough to include at least one reason for thinking how you think. Otherwise, all we have are a bunch of people saying, “I think this” “Well, I think that” back and forth.
I’m not saying we need a bunch of people in three-piece suits with bad comb-overs. That’s not what I mean by “theologian.” I’m just saying, who is God really? What is He like? What does He want? Based on that, how should we respond to Him? It’s the answers to questions like this that should drive how we address the various specific situations that Dan is so kind to bring to our attention.
