Creative Writing
Apparently it is now politically incorrect to write a paper for school that you dream of shooting your classmates and then have sex with their dead bodies.
Honors student Allen Lee was arrested for an essay he wrote in his creative writing class. The teacher told the students not to “censor” themselves. They were also encouraged to “exaggerate.” So Allen Lee did what any normal boy his age would do and wrote a story of a dream of shooting his classmates and having sex with their dead bodies.
He was arrested and transferred to another school. (School officials must not care about the kids in the other school). Here is the link: Link
Should Allen Lee be forced to change schools for being creative in his writing class?

first!
I think that as messed up as that writing is, it depends more on what his point was and why he said what he said.
He shouldn’t be forced to change schools, but he needs to see a psychiatrist, ‘cuz that’s some freaky shit, yo.
This reminds me of Cho Seung-Hui’s essays in his English class…
“School officials must not care about the kids in the other school” I kinda had the same thought, though it was an odd post to make me laugh… Change schools? No. Seek serious help? Yes.
That’s pretty weird, but they told him to exaggerate, so no.
I wish the kid had been creative in a less violent (and non-necrophiliac) way… I think he was not appropriate in his creativity.
this depends on if this guy is creepy as hell…or it’s just a joke. A lot of my friends joke around…and if they said that…i’d laugh
I wouldn’t call his writing “being creative”. I would call it be being a sick puppy. He should be forced to undergo psychiatric evaluation before he is allowed in any public place.
No, he did what the teacher asked…
Oh, it’s because he’s asian too.
we will give away all our civil liberties for personal safety
People watch stuff like that on TV all the time, so why is he getting arrested for writing it in a creative writings class, where he was asked to exaggerate and not to censor himself?
The teacher should have said, “Don’t write about killing or raping”.
He only did what the teacher asked him to do, so no. But maybe he should seek some professional help though…
why would he need psychiatic evaluation? He’s not crazy…He was making a joke. He’s not the crazy loner asian Cho was. this kid just wanted a laugh with his friends.
I used to write stories and poems about killing people. This was a year before Columbine happened.
I’ve got an idea, let’s arrest Jerry Bruckheimer for all the drama and crime and death on his shows like Law & Order! Let’s arrest the filmakers and directors of movies such as Hannibal, the 007 series, the Oceans 11/12/13 series & so forth!! Let’s kill all creative expression.
I would have giggled if i was able to convince my friend to write something like that. It’s funny to see what kind of reaction you can get out of the teacher…doesn’t anyone else remember high school?
Cho’s essay was really creepy
http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2007/0417071vtech1.html
Um… would that topic ever have been politically correct to write about?
It’s a bit of a toughie, because creative writing is just that – creative. There aren’t really supposed to be too many limits. Creative writing products are often very out there. But then again, I think it’s reasonable to react with concern when someone writes something with subject matter like this.
I do fear though that there is a backlash, and it’s probably no accident that the kid was silly enough to write about a shooting, being an Asian male, in the wake of the VA Tech shootings.
No. He didn’t mean any harm by it. It appears he was writing it as a joke. It may not have been funny, but… neither is a lot of what’s written these days. (And I meant that specifically as far as what’s appropriate is concerned.) A lot of people think that they’re being funny when really, it’s just sick. What I want to know is, were his classmates disturbed by what he’d written, or did they share his sense of “humor”, because if they didn’t see him as a threat, then he fo’ damn sho’ should have been able to stay at school.
Well, no more writing of killing students. Yay for censorship! [sarcasm]
hahaha too funny.
whereever the dude lives….it must be a good area without any crime happening….hence the reaction of authorities…”oh we got a code red” at CG highschool! move move move!!! “call the swat team!” “oh he’s Asian! shoot first ask later!”
have a great weekend dude
there goes the first amendment…
its kinda wierd, but at the same time, if they were specifically told to not censor themselves and axaggerate, then it seems like he was just folowing instructions.
If he does one day “snap” and go postal on a school…I hope he goes back to the school he was kicked out of…hopefully to the creative writing class.
if the incident with cho never would’ve occured – would they react the same way? they would probably just send him to the guidance counselor
i’ll say it once and i’ll say it again:
the most gentle, sweet, well-adjusted person i know writes the fuckin’ creepiest shit i’ve ever read. but he gets all his aggression out in writing — he’s never going to shoot up a school, because he’s already got his emotive catharsis. writing creepy shit doesn’t make you shifty, especially not when the instructions were to exaggerate.
i wrote creepy ass vampire stories back in my high school creative writing classes — my english teacher always told me to get grittier, more violent. it’s all a part of writing — sure, if the guy is anti-social, beats people up for no reason, and acts shifty all around, then maybe he needs help. but one story? minus any other suspicious activities? not really cause for alarm, i’d say.
First question: why is it always Asian kids? O.o
Okay, No. Not if those were the specifics. Just because you write about something on your mind doesn’t mean that’s what your intentions are. Example: I’m a writer. One of the stories I recently wrote addressed child molestation. It was told from first person.
I was never molested.
And the thing is, upon reading that, and seeing it described as it is…would that necessarily tell the teachers that they need to investigate my past to see if I was molested????
Noooo. Therefore, they shouldn’t kick this kid out of the school. They should ask his reasonings behind it. At least that’s my thoughts.
No he shouldn’t have been kicked out for doing what the teacher said to do.
thats not creative thats psychotic! I think he should be home schooled in the local jouvie center for that one.
i think he was just following instructions. but it probbobly depends on where it came from, his history, if it was a joke, etc.
Fight Mental Illness Stigma
My school had an arrest last week too.
I can’t comment on what was or was not done.
This whole “action” taken on the part of anyone who makes a decision is a joke. What a waste of energy.
Are people in positions of authority really as stupid as the rest of us?
Apparently so…
If they didn’t want to hear it then they shouldn’t have asked him to write it..
That is really sick though..
ryc–I’m referring to Springfield, Missouri. I get tired of school when I’m there, but it is an environment/atmosphere that I really like. I think that is why I’m looking at grad school so soon after my undergrad.
eh, i laughed hilariously when i read your version of this story. is it sick that i find this funny?
So Allen Lee did what any normal boy his age would do and wrote a story of a dream of shooting his classmates and having sex with their dead bodies…
I’m hoping that’s sarcasm there, coz I definitely don’t think that is a normal thing to do. I think that’s sick, and it is definitely wrong.
That is so sad. There is no longer creativity. People have to continue to limit themselves. Then again, there are tons of movies more sick than that. How about hostel? How about saw? Do those people deserve to be “put on watch” too?
The teacher gave them free license to write what they wanted. It’s very possible he drew on this topic because of the what happened at VA Tech. Instead of transferring him, they should’ve asked where the idea came from.
I don’t think the school was within their rights…they were told not to censor themselves, and it was a creative writing class…This is b.s. that he was arrested and transferred. Yeah, he wrote a creepy essay..but I got pissed off in high school because I would be sent to the office because of my poems and essays written for class assignments, because they showed the characteristics of being depressed.
The most that should have happened to the kid is talking to a school counselor, to see if he really is messed up…I think it would have come back that he’s just a normal teenager fulfilling a writing assignment.
Ha – that was all on the radio here (it is in Chicagoland where I am).
He just had to be Asian huh?
let a white kid write the same type of essay and see if THEY get arrested.
america fucking sucks ass.
no, it doesn’t matter where he is, he can still have those thoughts.
Probably not. More of a stern talk of what is appropriate. Like, if a psychiatrist says “feel free to express yourself” and the patient gets up and stabs the doctor…I don’t think that would be appropriate!
Maybe teachers should watch what they ask for and get specific about what they don’t want.
**I was called up to the school probably 10 years ago when my daughter wrote something that was very vividly written. The instructions were “what would the world be like if we had no laws” and “just go wild”. Well she did and wrote about what could happen if a student was not happy with a grade they got. We had the meeting and everything was okay. The principal and counselor commented that it was well written, very descriptive, etc and the teacher got what she asked for, ha. She got an A and was extremely embarassed by the whole situation. She never wrote anything like that again. After the incident her writing became very “careful” not at all imaginative. Guess what profession she went into…yup she is a teacher, ha.
That’s messed up.
But she said don’t hold back. Hell NO he shouldn’t be transferred. I know that we’re all recovering from something as a nation right now. It’s a soft spot. But seriously. Arrest?
Yeah got sidetracked by my situation and didn’t answer the question. Not as long as he understands why they deemed it inappropriate and was remorseful and there were no ill feelings towards him from the school faculty and students.
I understand why everyone is tense about things but heck…
-groan- wrong censoring. This isn’t a skit from The Aristocrats–
“Don’t censor yourself” = “don’t hold back on your subject and say what you mean,” not “f*** s*** p***.” I mean, isn’t it pretty clear? So dumb.
Hmmm…he looks Asian too…
*THIS COMMENT IN NO WAY REFLECTS MY THOUGHTS ON THE KOREAN PEOPLE, OR ASIAN PEOPLE AS A WHOLE…HECK…I AM ASIAN*
I like this cartoon:
http://www.funnyjunk.com/pages/madness.htm
does it mean I, or the person that made it has a problem?
What about Steven King or any number of horror movie or book writers?
I don’t think he should be kicked out, but its definetly a warning sign. Now we know after the VA Tech shooting we can’t really take those things lightly. That guy writed creepy things and then comitted the largest school shooting. We should listen up, I think. But kicking him out may be extreme.
Did he at least kill them interestingly and perform creative necrophilia? If so, A+.
No.
If you say “don’t censor” , you should mean “don’t censor.”
And what does changing schools do? He’s still the same person.
No, that [supposedly] could also harm the other school, but that depends on whether or not the reference was specifically directed towards characters in his class because of hate or if it was more of a general thing. And, of course, whether or not he was joking.
Come on, who hasn’t thought about shooting someone else at one point in their lives? I don’t know about the necro part though. That part is a bit weird but could probably be explained by the creativity requirement.
Plus, if it were true that he did dream that… dreams are weird. Some pretty wacked out stuff can be created there when you can’t control it.
He doesn’t look as suspicious as the other guy. He looks semi-willing to get his picture taken, not with his head down, not wearing some other clothing that hides most of him from the rest of the world like a hat, hoodie, etc. They’re just both Asian [gasp?!].
All factors should be considered before kicking a person out for writing something like that.
No.
If you say “don’t censor” , you should mean “don’t censor.”
And what does changing schools do? He’s still the same person.
if you say “don’t censor yourselves” then be ready for anything…stupid people have no idea that the most times people talk about shit does not mean that they will do it.
god must love idoits, he made so fucking many of them
He shouldn’t be forced to change schools, but he needs to see a psychiatrist, ‘cuz that’s some freaky shit, yo.
Posted 4/27/2007 12:29 PM by LeFooooo
Uh. I agree.
no, but he should be forced to seek medical help.
I don’t know. I wouldn’t want my granddaughter in the same school with him.
The teacher told him not to censor himself and to exaggerate. So he did. It’s incredibly fucked up that they would punish him for that; However, our rights change once we step onto school property, and “freedom of speech” no longer applies.
you said it was in creative writing class rite? he was jsut being creative. but ic an understand y he got arrested. especiailly after the VA. Tech trajedy. no one wants that to happen again. but no, i dont think he should be transferred.
theres a difference between creativity and being morbid. theres nothing creative about writing a story like that.
Holy crap, this is what I was afraid of. Now, even when told “don’t censor yourself,” we’ll feel like we have to self-censor to keep ourselves from suspicion.
Just because school shooters write crazy things doesn’t mean people who write crazy things are going to be school shooters.
Everyone should read Stephen King’s essay on the subject.
http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20036014,00.html
That’s simply in bad taste in the light of the recent Tech shooting. I don’t think putting him in another school is the right solution though. They’re just pushing the problem on someone else.
I dont think he did anything wrong.
If my child wrote something like that they’d be seeing a shrink real fast.
However, the teacher should have give some guidelines . . . not just be creative.
I don’t know if I’d put murder and dead people rape in the category of ‘exaggeration’. I would imagine the teacher maybe meant something more along the lines of a tall tale. I think it’s definitely cause for alarm, and yay for free speech, but seriously. People have to consider what kind of crap they’re putting out there into the world. Do we really need more drivel about murder and rape??? I’d say the kid needs a definite psychological eval. Transferring the kid to another school doesn’t solve much of anything.

Add to that list World Trade Center, United 93, Hotel Rwanda, Schindler’s List… oh wait I guess those don’t have anything to do with what you said…
Considering recent events, he should have been more careful. But if the teacher said to “exaggerate” and he did, the least the teacher could have done was talk to him and see what he meant by it. Also, there are a whole lot of other things that should have been considered, namely, if he had shown any other warning signs.
I think there’s a difference between this and Cho’s writings. It seems Cho wrote what he did for a regular class assignment, and most of his writing was like that. This seems like it was a one time thing with this other fellow. Maybe the school should watch him a bit more carefully after that, but sending him to a different for following a class assignment? That’s a bit much.
how do they think the movies get to the screen? just about the first step is someone has to write it out! tihs was a creative writing class, had he third person narrated it would it have been the same reaction?
I’ve been an editor of a high school literary magazine before and I know that it is the deep, dark, creative writing that stays with you. For example, one creative writing topic was about looking/spying into someone’s window or writing from the view of a rape victim. These pieces of writing were eerie, however they showed so much creativity that it was shocking. We as an editorial staff never thought that this type of writing could be related to the student’s mental state. I think what the school system did to this child was very wrong. Instead of praising him for his creative, they condemn it instead. Yeah, and I’m sure it has absolutely nothing to do with him being Asian. Prejudice sucks.
absolutely not
They definitely shouldn’t have arrested him. That’s ridiculous.
The VT shooting was horrifying, but that doesn’t mean that every person who writes something freaky intends to go out and do it. If the teacher was really concerned, they could have talked to the kid about it or sent them to the counselor. Especially having said “don’t censor yourself” and “exaggerate”.
no, maybe see a psychologist.
why are kids so sick these days
ehh i dont know..i guess. there is that one poem, Annabelle Lee, about that.
No. What is it with these teachers and schools nowadays?
They encourage this type of writing and then call law enforcement when the kid does what the teacher told him to do. This is nothing more than a sting operation. Tell the kids to write this stuff and when they do, arrest them.
Uhm… no.
That’s stupid…
boy this post has an enormous stench of sarcasm!!! maybe he should get some mental help will be a better call.
oh dear God, he just HAD to be Asian.
it was a dream. this kid obviously has been watching the news and therefore had a dream about it. it’s probably more of the school saving their own ass.
and i don’t think he meant it. he was just joking around.
read the article people! lol
NO
That dumb ass teacher should be fired or transferred.
He followed directions and I think if this had happened before the VT thing it would have disappeared like a fart in the wind….
LOL.
I admire him for his morbid-ity.
One of the girls in my creative writing class was told the same kind of thing: Be creative, hold nothing back, and step out of the ‘comfort zone’. She did, wrote a story about a girl being raped with a broomstick, and was told by the teacher that “your story made me want to vomit”. She revised it, censoring the more graphic details, and was told it was “not quite as horrible”. Yay creativity…
The teacher should have set guide lines….
No. Unless it was stated beforehand that you couldn’t write about that without getting kicked out, they shouldn’t be able to do that.
Plus kicking
Sorry. Plus kicking him out would just give him a reason to go to the school and kill everyone*
When we say “don’t censor” that’s not really what we mean. I took a creative writing class my senior year in high school and the teacher was upset about some of the things former students had written. She said no baby in blender stories. Then she went on to say that she was really upset about how a kid had used the word “queer” in a story (not the same one as the culinista les enfants). She equated it to the reviled “n” word. I just laughed. Another girl turned around and made the apt comment about how no matter what a person wrote, somewhere, someone would be offended.
As for the poor kid above, maybe they sent him away ’cause he’s Asian. People are stupid like that. Well, I’ll just leave it at stupid. When a person can’t express their feelings in another way, they might just act them out.
i forgot to answer your question: no.
Maybe he was being ironic. I’d say it’s fairly amusing. Kids expect these reactions from school now-a-days.
Read my latest post. Xangans BEWARE!
no
wow…those police must have nothing else to do. i feel like someone should have stood up for the guy. uncensored writing isnt a criminal act.
The teacher should have set appropriate limits. Since the teacher told the students not to censor themselves, the teacher is partially in the wrong here, too. By no censorship: what did the teacher have in mind? Go for the cursing. Go for the sex. Go for the murder. The student should be questioned, but plenty of creative people come up with these violent writings and pieces and don’t actually act on them. Think about all of the violent and sexual movies out today– someone had to write them. But are they in jail for it? Nope.
To be honest, I’m not sure why the student was arrested.
I don’t know who I’m more upset by; the teacher giving an assignment with no parameters and then freaking out, the student for writing it, the law enforcement for acting on it. I guess law enforcement is the least culpable since they must check out every report and respond to it. Anyway you slice it though, the story was sick.
uh no, but uh, he should get conseling…
Not nessisarily.
This reminds me of Cho Seung-Hui’s essays in his English class…
Posted 4/27/2007 12:30 PM by FreeeVerse
My thoughts exactly…
Haha, he is so sarcastic. Either that or fucked up. If he was being sarcastic, thumbs up. That’s exactly what I’d do in a Creative Writing class if they talked like that. Exaggerating and such is a given. It’s an insult to most writers
Whatever he’s an honors student.
i guess it’s bc he was an asian male too
In the light of the Virginia Tech massacre, I think people are a little sensitive about this kind of thing.
I don’t know if this happened since then, but I understand the concern.
wtf was the teacher thinking? seriously, tell the kids to exaggerate and then freak? the entire system is a self perpetuating cycle of fear and violence. and fucking idiocy too
Yeah, what’s scary is that we’re arresting people for expressing ideas -
whatever happened to freedom of speech is beyond me.
it should be more a question of should he have censored himself better..I mean, there’s creative writing, and then there’s destructive writing. Be wise in the way you portray yourself, and if you think you’re NOT going to get into trouble for writing freaky crap like that, you need to see a therapist.
Why would his teacher say to exaggerate etc. and then punish students for doing so? She should have been more specific in her assignment (ie, “Exaggerate but don’t kill anyone”). Sounds a little silly to me.
well, there is freedom of speech but thats kinda crazy.. thenagain, some great historic writers were kinda crazy too…
the fact that it was him killing and having sex with them and not a charecter is a bit disconcerting as well!!! thats the kinda stuff serial killers do.. ewe, its gross just thiking and typing about this.
Daniel (doubledb)
That just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me…
They should have at least talked to him or something first…
No.
We all have obscene thoughts, and they completely violated his right of free speech. He never said he would actually do this. This is censorship. I don’t want them to butt in anymore than they have in censoring people or else they’ll go further and further and soon we won’t be able to say anything.
I don’t see the point of making him change schools, unless it’s to alleviate the embarrassmnent of the teacher who got him in trouble.
The teacher was asking for it.
You would think an honor student would know how to spell…or at least do spell check before submitting his essay.
free speech. yes, it’s a bit creepy, but it’s called CREATIVE WRITING. other writers who write horrors are sick and twisted too. are you going to arrest them? geez!
all i have to say is that guy was STUPID for writing about killing your CLASSMATES right after the whole VT situation..and #2 hes asian so hmm maybe he should of thought of the sterotypin people are doing …#3…i dont think having sex with dead bodies is creative..#4and StephanieSH928 i could why u would sumthin this retarded would be funni since ur profile pic has u grabbin a dummy’s crotch…the kid got what he got but the skool is worse for even puttin him into another public facitlity..physciatric anaylisis is the best way to go.
skitts
I don’t think he should be forced to leave the school. It was a creative writing assignment and that’s what he was creative. It was a little creepy though so maybe he should have to talk to the guidance counselor or something but he shouldn’t be expelled. It is a little to coincidental that he was Asian?
“So Allen Lee did what any normal boy his age would do and wrote a story of a dream of shooting his classmates and having sex with their dead bodies.”
Huh? normal? I call this sick! He should be transferred to a psychotherapy clinic!!!
I don’t think so. But after the VA Tech incident, I question his judgement in writing something like that anyway. I have a friend who, a week after the shooting, made a joke about bringing a gun to work, and he was promptly fired. It doesn’t matter if you don’t mean what you’re saying, because people get so paranoid that they’ll jump to conclusions about the smallest matters. (If you don’t believe me, evaluate how people are acting a month before election day.) So, I don’t think he should have been expelled…but I also think he should have thought about the consequences of his actions before he wrote the paper.
A normal boy his age would write that, Dan? That’s humorous to me…
a little TOO creative though don’t u think?
this horrible tragedy haz been another excuse 4 the goverment 2 try 2 censor people especially young peoples freedoms and its time it stop.chos plays werea ctually good ive writeen dark things against adult type authority and people should be allowed 2 do that.my parents abused me and chos not a good person but maybe hiz parents abused him the anser is not more restriction telling a homicidal maniac he cant play a violent video game probly would make him more violent.
Actually, this happened to me once. I was drawing a rather morbid picture once during class of a little girl stabbing a teddy bear, and the teacher got worried and talked to me after class… I have a friend who draws dead rats, and another who occasionally draws muffins in lewd poses. It doesn’t mean that we are going to turn violent or anything.
If the teacher is really concerned about the content he/she sees the students writing, of course they should talk about it privately, as it could be a sign of some sort of problem this person might have. After all, the teachers are not only there to teach, but to look after their students. However, nobody should be punished fo simply being creative, especially in a class where you are supposedly encouraged for being creative!
(add to my previous note) Luckily for me, all that happened was the teacher talked to me about the drawing, nothing more. ^.^;;;
Its wierd
But jeez. The teacher told him to be creative. What ever happened to freedom of speech even after VT?
I bet if he were white he would go with just a warning.
I’d like to know what he did wrong.
thats disgusting, he should not be arrested….
i question their motives…
1) is it because he’s asian???
2)is it because the Vtech shooting recently?
3) is it because the teacher decided to go back on his/her word on being creative?
he did follow directions on a simple school assignment. he did not censor himself. and he did exaggerate. he also tried putting some humor into it…it wasn’t all that funny…but whatever. he simply wrote about a dream that he had. is that so wrong? we all dream bad dreams. we all dream nightmares. we all dream strange things like this student did. please. the government is taking things too far now…its also a part of FREEDOM OF SPEECH. he can say whatever the fuck he wants.
Well, that’s pretty twisted, but at the same time he was prompted to be uncensored. I’d say he needs some proffessional talk (psychiatrist or something) to find his motives. If he was serious, then there’s a problem. I gotta say the comment “they must not care about the other school” was pretty funny. I have a question for you Dan, do you read all these comments??
Uh…..no… not unless the teachers/students are concerned for a series of reasons.
That guy is a sick motherfucker!
Woah………uhhhh…….wierd.
I’m currently writing a book about a school shooting, in remembrance of VA Tech and Columbine, and I think the whole “what people write is what I’m gonna do” theory. I mean, look at all the murder mystery authors, that would be ALOT of arrests.
On second though, the fact that it was actually HIS classmates, and the having sex part is incredibly disturbing. School transfers won’t change anything, but I would recommend help.
Yeah, they were definitely asking for it. The subject matter is still kind of sensitive, though I really can’t talk cause I wrote a story about how I got eaten by a garbage disposal and woke up naked in china, and no one arrested me…
Eww! He needs help! really, you don’t joke about stuff like that unless you seriously need help!
I love how everyone jumps immediately to this kid needing “psychiatric evaluation.” Give me a break.
I guarantee you that there is not ONE person on this planet who hasn’t, at some point or another, fantasized about “getting revenge” or something like that.
Allen Lee was just doing an assignment for his class; maybe the topic wasn’t exactly politically correct right now, but unless he started to write constantly about killing people or necrophilia, he wasn’t in the wrong. There’s PLENTY of writing out there today that touches on sicker subjects than that.
What was the teacher doing telling HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS not to censor themselves? College professor? Sure – go ahead and tell your students to include whatever they want. But in high school, teachers are still watching out to see if they need to report incidents to protective services, they’re still dealing with a lot of immaturity from their students. This student needs counseling, and this teacher really needs to reflect upon why he gave this assignment.
Umm…well…see, creative writing in general isn’t bad. Creative writing can have death, blood, killing, sex, rape, etc…but so close to VT, this kid is an idiot for doing that. Although the teacher told him too…tough call. I’m waiting to see how this turns out.
Iceman, I know, and it’s not so much the killing that makes me think he has problems, I’ve NEVER written a book without killing, and it’s natural to want revenge. What’s the most disturbing part is having sex with their bodies…..THAT is messed up.
Also, after VT and the incident at Johnston Space Center, really stupid. And usually thoughts of revenge are kept in one’s mind, the fact that he wrote this for all to see is disturbing. And that it’s his OWN classmates. It wouldn’t be so bad if he used his own characters in that plot.
Also, it’s wierd that afterward he though it was FUNNY.
well it may be kind of over the top but if his teacher asked him to do it and he did. So he shouldnt really be punished for it.
CormackMcKinney in short wrote this is on TV anyways.
WARNING WARNING: Violent scenes from TV and video games have been implanted into impressionable teenagers and we’re perplexed by the bloodshed?
Thousands of Roman citizens gathered at the Colosseum to watch slaves fight to the death and lions mutilate defenseless children. How barbaric to watch such an act, yet Rome caved blood. Today such acts would be illegal in our nation, yet the thrill of such an event continues to captivate our attention through Hollywood. The only difference is now the casualties are not condemned slaves, but unsuspecting citizens.
So let’s see…
-Bad stuff happens to country (VA Tech)
-People react by limiting civil rights (first amendment, possibly racism in this case)
-People in country get stressed. Sick of being limited. Unhappy
-Bad stuff happens again
Hmm…Maybe we should uphold everyone’s rights instead of limiting them, and less bad things would happen. There would still be crazy people, but at least the sane ones wouldn’t be angry as well.
And btw…Whoever was talking about the subject of this kid’s paper being funny…Yeah I agree. I think he prolly found it amusing too. I’ve been suspended from school for writing “inappropriate” things. I once got a D on a writing project because it wasn’t “positive” enough. He shouldn’t be punished at all.
I wonder what Quentin Tarentino’s or Robert Rodriguez’ teacher would have said to their visions of creative expressions now. We seem to accept some creativity but are freaked out about others.
And the pendulum swings again.
any normal boy his age? really?
Just needs to see a Physciatrist and maybe go to Rehab.
And Suspend him until he gets better..
no! they got what they asked for. freedom of speech.
it’s your problem if you decide it’s too obscene, in the context that you first asked for it.
as far as the content; perhaps he should be taken out of school for a while to get some help,
but arresting him and transferring him to another school isn’t going to solve the “problem”.
i second Iceman2_1.
Sounds like he was just fulfilling the points of the assignment. Yes, he picked a bad time to be rebellious, but maybe he wanted to get expelled. Seems like he was asking for it, given the events at VT a few weeks ago. I don’t know…I’m against censorship as well, and it was a free-writing assignment, so yea–I’m on the fence on this one.
I agree with LeFoooo and FreeeVerse - this reminds me of Seung-Hui Cho’s essays and the person should be evaluated by a therapist/social worker and psychiatrist. Better safe than sorry… we don’t need another VT tragedy or some sex scandal in the news. One could have done the assignment with less controversy and more appropriateness. I think schools and universities are more alert and sensitive righ now because they do not want another blood bath or risk a lawsuit. Still, having the student evaluated by the mentioned professionals would be better than forcing him to switch schools. Shuffling him from school to school will not solve any potential problems but creat them instead.
Because of the other school shootings that have happened in the past few years, the student should have known better than to write about such a topic. It’s pure common sense. On the other hand, high school students like to push buttons to try to make a point. This kid was possibly doing just that. Still, if I were a parent with a son or daughter at this student’s high school, I would appreciate that precautions were being taken to prevent another tragic high school shooting.
kekekekekeke
that’s hillarious
Apparently, Freedom of Speech means nothing.
And yeah, the hypocrisy of arresting him and then sending him to another school is kind of funny.
that’s so stupid.
i hate school.
