  • New Ways To Cheat

I just read an article about how kids are using iPods to cheat.  Here is the link:  Link

iPod nano. Rhythm and hues. 2GB, 4GB, 8GB from $149

If you saw a person cheating on a test or assignment, would you turn them in?

  • I was actually thinking about doing that a few days ago. No, I wouldn’t. I don’t turn people in when they cheat because I wouldn’t want someone doing that to me.

  • Well, being a teacher, I suppose I would have to address the issue with the student.

  • Depends, if the class was curved I would because then his cheating is directly influencing the kind of grade I get. If he gets 100/100, and the next highest score is a 75, he killed the curve for the rest of us.

If the class isn’t curved, but on a straight scale I wouldn’t.

  • Probably not, but it would depend on the test… I wouldnt want someone trying to be a brain surgeon cheating on a test…

  • “Some students use iPod-compatible voice recorders to record test answers in advance and them play them back, said 16-year-old Mountain View junior Damir Bazdar.”

How are they getting the answers before hand? It doesn’t matter if they take away the ipods, if they have the answers they can always just memorize them.

  • I have to. Here at Princeton, there’s this thing called the Honor Code. It’s pretty basic. If you cheat, you’re expelled. But if you see someone cheating, and you don’t report them, and someone finds out about it, then YOU were cheating to, and you’re expelled.

So yeah. I’d turn the person in.

  • I meant “too,” not “to.”

Man, I hate when I do that.

  • That’s pretty lame on the University’s part Chocobo. But I guess it’s kind of like helping someone if they’re in trouble. Legally you’re bound to.

  • yes. not only owuld i turn them in, i would beat them up later in the school yeard.

  • Probably not. They always get busted in the end. Cheating and getting caught in the practical, when they have to apply the learning. Nah, not worth it.

    hahahah “the golden rule”

  • Sure would. I told on my whole P.E. class one time because eveyone was cheating (except me and my friend). It was a written exam. I was afraid to do it. Everyone blamed my friend for tattling.

  • I’m not sure I would.  I’ve never liked tattle tales.

wait, is it tales or tells?   hmm…

  • Only if there is a curve.

  • To clarify, I mean I was afraid to tell on the whole class.  But I talked to my English teacher about it and she thought I should tell, too, so I did it and never regretted it. I can’t stand cheaters.

  • I like happydeviant’s response.

I would turn them in if I saw them because they are not doing themselves any good if they are cheating. I don’t even like straight memorizing stuff just for a test though because if you do that then you are just setting yourself up for failure later on. There are a few classes in which I would encourage cheating though but those classes are exceedingly difficult to cheat in without being caught, such as writing classes.

  • No, I’ve seen it done enough times but I won’t turn them in.. I figure they’ll get caught soon enough , anyway.

  • I would. In the end, its almost a way of helping them. They’re just getting by without learning anything, and in the end, people won’t know.

Proof that people go through school too often without learning anything: Last night’s million dollar question on “are you smarter than a 5th grader” was ‘What is the only prime factor of 16?’ and the guy walked.

*cries* Why won’t they let me on the show!!! I want easy money!

  • I never did for fear of the backlash. High School is a scary scary place for some students.

  • I have always hoped that if I did something wrong that I would be caught and learn my lesson. So yea I would definately turn them in, however I would confront the person about it before I told anyone who was in authority.

  • Yes. But then, I’m a T.A.–that’s my job.

  • yes, if it irritated me(a class where the tests were a pain or something). No, otherwise, because it is the teachers job to catch cheaters.

  • nah, I wouldn’t turn them in – but I wouldn’t lie if I was asked about it either!!

    *HUGS*

  • if it’s graded on a curve, sure. i don’t want my grade affected by some dumbass’s cheating. otherwise, it’s their life.

  • On an assignment no, on a test maybe…depends on the test and how important it is.. and also who the person cheating was. haha.

  • Now that is something new and creative, but it was only a matter of time before kids started using Ipods for cheating they all ready use everything else.

  • I probably wouldn’t notice, because I’d be too busy trying to take the test myself. I’ve got a one track mind. ;)

  • I’d think long and hard about it.  I still don’t know what I’d do.  Some ideas that are somewhat of a compromise are approaching the student or telling the teacher that “someone” was cheating and recommending they keep a sharper eye out.  I don’t know, though.  To me, it’s like asking if you’d report someone who you see stealing.  I have a hard time saying no to that.  Furthermore, a cheater isn’t being fair to you because (assuming you studied) he’s trying to get for himself what you had to work for.

  • On a curve you are dead meat if you don’t. It would become cheat, turn them in, or enjoy low grades. But honestly I was never one to notice what anyone else was doing. I am taking a test remember. If word gets to me I would warn the teacher about the method being used. I’m not going to spread hearsay about who is doing it.

  • Well, they are banning all electronics because they said it “disturbs the students from learning in class”. We never had someone say that someone could cheat on it. That was usually on cell phones.

Eh, old news. High school isn’t really fun. It’s fun when you break the rules and get away with it. =]

I agree.. I want to be on that show too. But give the guy a break. Look at the pressure he was under + he only got to see the subject, not the question before walking, and had not done well in math. He is still half a million dollars richer than me!

  • Yes, but I’m a college instructor so, there you go. Why is it so hard for students to take responsibility for themselves and do their own work?

  • Yes, if I was a faggot.

  • I have done it before.
I was the one all the kids in high school hated to have class with.:)

  • Yes, I would rat people out. It isn’t fair to those who take the failing grade.

  • um hell no ..cause i cheat and i would hate if someone told on me!!.lol…srry but idc if peeps cheat or not….i know i do it so i just smile at em and ask for the anwers.lmao:):P

  • yes, especially if you don’t like that person already. HAHA.

& i’d cheated last year in school (not recently though) but it wasn’t even serious anyways – it was only for a geography qiuz which the whole class cheated. lol.

  • haha, by saying that (above) i feel like a bitch

  • Probably not… karmaaaa

  • Probably not… karmaaaa

  • Probably not… karmaaaa

  • No. You never know what they will do to you in return.

  • totally, it’s not fair to the rest of us who actually worked out asses off to pass. haha.

I actually did turn in a couple students who got ahold of the exam somehow when I was going to college for a semester…my teacher loved me for that..haha I got like twenty extra points for “honesty” it was kinda cool…they got booted out of the class.

  • No, It’s none of my business. And I’d kick someone’s ass if they told on me… not that I do such things *cough*.

  • Cheating is the american way! LoL…

  • if it was curved then yes i would.
    if not, then no.

  • Depends on the test..and the person..

    I probably would though..

  • Well, since I’m homeschooled it is REALLY hard to cheat. ;D Espicially since my sister is a one grade lower than me, so yeah. :P But in College, if I find out someone cheated, I’d call them an Immature Punk. But I wouldn’t tell. I mean, that just makes me feel like I was part of it too..Odd. xD But really, if your above Elementary Level, you really need to stop acting like someone in the Elementary Level.

  • Nope. I would just fail them! :)

  • Shoot, I was aware of this since day one I got my Dell DJ back in 9th grade.. it had a built-in mic you could use for writing mental notes to yourself.. and I knew I could just as easily program in all my notes.. but looking at the article, it looks like kids are downloading formulas and shit.. that’s a little over-the-top.

Couldn’t it all be solved by just occasionally walking around the room and kicking out the assholes with the earphone in?

Eventually, they’re just gonna ban graphing calculators, cause you can also type your notes into them.

  • Thank you media, for giving me a new idea on how to cheat. Why didn’t I think of that? And if I caught someone cheating on an exam I wouldn’t turn them in because that’s not my business, they will realize in the long run (especially in college-grad) that studying is essential for non-multiple choice questions.

  • Hah, I don’t worry about the curve… I’m the one setting it fair and square. Suckas.

  • RYC:  I have no icky parts!

    I use my hand!!!!  Hehe!

  • i would confront them about it, and if they dont turn themselves in…i dont know what i would do.

  • School tests? Likely not. Although that’s not a good thing; it doesn’t help anyone.

As far as posts we keep up with, the handful I started with shut down long ago. Xanga can be such a lonely place…

  • *sigh* I haven’t in the past even when some jerk was trying to copy off of my paper.

Though I was always amused when someone would attempt to copy off mine when I had NOOOO idea what the hell I was doing.

  • Snitches get stitches.

  • no. people will get what’s coming to them in the end. who am i to police other people’s behaviors?

  • As a teacher, of course, I would have to address it.  But as a student, I just kept my head down and my paper out of sight.

  • Am I hoping for a curve?  Nah, I wouldn’t turn them in.

  • Maybe if I was jealous cuz I wasnt smart enough to think of it.

  • that’s why you don’t give students the questions to the test before hand.  thye have a syllabus and if they are in high school they should be aware of what units were covered.  if they aren’t, then boo hoo.  you get weeded out.

that’s also why you collect cell phones, iPods, etc. etc. before class.

  • to answer the question as the teacher/proctor yes.  I mean if you’re that dumb.

    as a student, probably not.

  • It’s their business. If they get caught it’s on them. It’s the people that look around that get caught. If you are concentrating on your own papers you shouldn’t be able to tell if a person is cheating or not. It’s the job of the teacher/monitor  to make sure no one is cheating.

  • God, you silly children. Ipods and gadgets and hats? I used to cheat by writing on my lower stomach. Lifting the very bottom of my shirt was way easier and more subtle than writing on my hand or texting a message.. that, however, was before I realized that if I actually spent that five minutes reading the chapter I wouldn’t have to sneak around.

As for your question, stay focused on your own business =)

  • hell no r u crazy if u turn them in they’ll kick ur ass

  • but thax 4 da idea
    =^)

  • i would have to think about it. i would probably talk to them….let them i kno i saw them and if it was an arch enemy of mine—definatly turn them in!! i think that God would want us to tho because nothing is done insecret. Be sure your sins will find you out.

  • i would have to think about it. i would probably talk to them….let them i kno i saw them and if it was an arch enemy of mine—definatly turn them in!! i think that God would want us to tho because nothing is done insecret. Be sure your sins will find you out.

  • Never, unless I needed to cheat and they wouldn’t let me.

  • no. its like an unwritten code lol

  • no because in my head I’m hoping they would do the same incase I needed to take a peek

  • Back when I was in school, many moons ago, no I would not.

  • No.

I don’t like tattlers. Besides, they’re only hurting themselves. If they don’t get caught, they haven’t learned anything and it hurts them. If they do get caught, they still haven’t learned anything and will get in trouble. *shrugs* It’s not your problem, so don’t snitch.

  • people cheat..it’s not a big secret. i dont turn them in. as long as they’re not cheating off me…i really don’t care because i know eventually they’ll get what they deserve..KaRma.

  • Yes, because I’m that special type of jerk

  • No! and if someone turned me in, I’d beat their ass.

  • no, it’s not my responsibility to make them do the right thing..if by 11th grade they are still cheatign i cant see me telling one them will result in a chnage of ways..

  • Yup. As a teacher, I certainly appreciate it when other students let me know about other students cheating. Cheating is low! School is about using your brain, thinking through ideas, and problem-solving– and in the end, acquiring knowledge. I think cheaters undermine their own education and I want to help them!

And as a student, yes, yes I would certainly turn another person in if I knew they were cheating.

  • Haha. They’re acting like cheating with iPods is something new.

  • I’ve used an ipod before, but they’re doing it stupidly. Just write stuff down on your comp, send it to your ipod, and use it via the notes feature on the iPod. It’s easy.

Generally, I used it for stuff to save my grade. I have a hard time with new skills in some subjects, so I used to for reminders. Though, I never had the answers, the reminders definately help me.

  • nope. i do it myself….lets not be hypocritical here.

  • yes

  • Yes. I work hard for my honest grades. No one should be allowed to cheat and get good grades without the effort.

  • I not only would turn people in that I saw cheating on an exam, but I have turned people in before.

  • I have never turned anyone in… I dont know, it seems wrong that they cheat but it seems wrong to “taddle.” eventually cheating will catch up with them and they will get caught cheating on test or when tested in real life.

    Daniel (doubledb)

  • If they were stupid.

The actually smart kids I don’t mind cheating since they could probably pass anyway.

  • nope i would let them turn themselves in or not. it’s not my problem.

  • whatever, i cheat in chem all the time. But i have no plans of ever working with chemistry in my life. ever. But honestly. I want to meet some one who has never cheated in their life. Every one has. dont lie to your self.

  • Cheating isn’t fair to anyone. I’d turn the person in if the degree of cheating were sufficient. I think almost everyone has told a friend answers and questions after a test, and you can’t really turn people in for that. There are ways to circumvent the backlash. Email is a pretty anonymous, secure way of reporting, if your teacher/staff promises to keep the informant anonymous. Haven’t reported anyone thus far (probably because all the cheaters know I’d turn them in, so they’re careful around me), but it’s the hard, right thing to do. Otherwise, by the time the teachers find out, there is this huge cheating ring and EVERYONE’s, even the non-cheaters’, privileges are revoked until they find out (does this sound like I’m speaking from personal experience?). And it sucks for everyone.

  • Probably not. It’ll come back to bite them in the ass in one way or another later.

  • If i were a teacher, heck yeah.
But if i were a student, no.

  • Yes, it annoys me to see people cheat on an exam i worked my ass off studying for.

  • y would u ? i mean im shure youve done it before!!! But im with that 1 guy, if it iz a test 2 determine if you were gonna be a brain surgeon or not i would kinda hint too it but i wouldn’t just come out and tell the teacher ,”hay he’s cheating !” That wouldn’t be very cool!!!!!

  • Yes, I know that people would probably think of me as a ‘snitch’ but honestly, how fair is that for those who actually studied. It’s just not right. And although life isn’t fair, school is supposed to be.

  • If that ever happens, then that’s the school’s and teachers’ fault.

My school had a simple rule, no mp3 players or any other electronics (unless you really need one like a calculator or a translator) during tests or exams. Simple as that =p.

But it’s none of my business if someone cheats, because I know that if that person continues to do that, they’ll just have to suffer the consequences in the future. Let them learn it the hard way =D. They are just screwing themselves over XD.

  • No. Not in high school anyway.

  • No, I wouldn’t because I’m not a snitch and what goes around comes around. They’ll be screwed in the long run anyway so just leave them be. Long live the iPod.

  • Afterwards, if it was someone I didn’t like, yeah.

  • it really actually depends, usually not!! Karma is pretty kraisey and when she comes there gonna get spanked

  • I don’t believe in Karma. Bad stuff happens to good people all the time.

  • I homeschool, so if I saw a sister cheating, yes, I would tell my mom. But they don’t cheat anyway. And no one in my family has an Ipod, so we can’t cheat with them. Although I’m not sure how I could cheat at my “school” . . .
