  • MySpace Photos

A woman is suing Millersville University after they denied her a teaching degree because of a photo she put on Myspace.

Stacy Snyder posted her photo on her MySpace that had the caption “Drunken Pirate.”  She was told the day before graduation that she would be given an English degree instead of an education degree.  She was also told she would not receive a teaching certificate.

Snyder is saying that the dean of the School of Education told her she was “promoting underaged drinking.”  Here is the link:  Link

Should Stacy Snyder be denied a teaching degree because of a drunken photo on her MySpace account?

  • how does it promote underage drinking when she’s obviously not underage if she’s old each to havea teaching degree?

  • Just when I thought the world couldn’t get any more ridiculous…

  • heh, did you seriously delete the rest of my comments?

  • To me, that doesn’t really look drunk. At all… anyways, their excuse is ridiculous. They could have just said, “If you’re going to be a teacher you have to take the picture off” instead of screwing up all of the hours she’s spent to get the degree she wanted.

  • Thats ridiculous, i had a teacher in 3rd grade who always showed cleavage in class. This girl was responsible enough to get good grades to get her certificate, and teh drinking obviousl was not extensive or intensive enough to interfere with ehr teaching. And the chances of her my space affecting her students in seriously unlikely. It seems that the Dean or who ever denied her her degree was just after someone for something stupid.

  • oi, where’d kestryl’s comments go?

  • No… That doesn’t exactly look like…promoting drinking.

  • Could this country get any more P.C.? This is a nightmare of epic proportions.

  • I’m just wondering what sort of two-bit university is Millersville U?

  • absolutely not. she took the required classes and passed with the required grades to obtain the degree….how absurd

  • No, that is rediculous- how can they even prove what was in the cup, or that she was drunk?  And even if they could, how can they presume to withhold a degree which she worked for and earned?

  • Oy, vey.

This whole “myspace” thing is really getting on my nerves. Has anyone NOT been accused of something because of their damn myspace? F*ck.

  • Wow.  That is tragic.  All that work and they think they can take it away at the last second because of a photo?  I don’t think it’s right.

  • she can have photos of her drinking if she is of age…it just may not be the most responsible thing in the world to be a teacher with those photos floating around.

  • Haha, she got drunk off Mr. Goodbar. Niiice

  • 1. You can’t prove there was alchohol in that cup!

    2. Not all Pirates drink alchohol!

    3. Unless she was in a photo handing an alchoholic beverage (clearly labeled alchahol) to someone underage, you can’t intrepert this photo as “”promoting underaged drinking.”

  • I think that’s stupid. Coincidentally, I live down the street from MU.

  • No. What’s with all these questions about photos on Myspace?

  • lol wow. just because she put the caption up doesn’t mean she was actually drunk. the whole situation is ridiculous.

  • No. Hello, you can drink alcohol if you’re 21 and over. It’s perfectly okay for her to drink.

  • that seems alittle harsh

  • Absolutely not.  How ridiculous.

  • no.
especially because she was of age to drink.
but more to the point, she worked for the degree she deserves. and one photo should not change that.

  • That’s so sad. It seems like just taking the picture down would have sufficed. Anyway, what business is it of the schools what she does in her free time? I don’t understand. Plus, she’s not even underage!

I think this is really stupid. Also really unfair for her, who spent years of time and money going to school for a teaching degree. Lame!

  • No, that’s the stupidest thing I have ever heard of

  • THAT’S RETARDED!

  • Play with MySpace….play with your future….doesn’t everyone know Xanga is where it’s at???

  • her personal life has nothing to do with her teaching skills….

that is lame. How did the people find out about her myspace picture anyway?

  • seems like myspace is screwing everyone over these days

  • no, how stupid. how do they even know what she is drinking?????

  • Most likely she wasn’t kissing enough ass at college.  It’s all politics similar to corporate America.

  • uhmmm…how ridiculous

  • not at all! are they going to deny degrees to like 99% of everyone who attends college, too?

  • How do they even know she was drunk? For all we know, she could’ve just put that caption because she thought she had a drunken look on her face. In any case, she was definitely over 21 when she took it, so I’m not sure how this would promote underage drinking…

  • That’s ridiculous! Drinking is legal, she’s being punished for it. Should people get fired for smoking in front of the officer building in case a kid is in a car driving past? No!

Drinkers and smokers have rights. They deserve to not be treated like shit.

  • No, that’s stupid.

  • no, a friend of mine works at a bar and grill and you would not believe the amount of teachers go in there and get drunk!

  • I don’t understand how that image promotes underage drinking in the first place.

That single picture should not be the deciding factor in whether or not this woman receives her teaching degree. I won’t say her myspace is irrelevant, since obviously there are various things she could be promoting that would make her unfit to be a teacher, but in this case it seems like a stretch since she’s of age, and there isn’t any promotion of the alcohol anyway.

  • No, that’s so stupid…my God. Who comes up with this stuff?

  • She’s no underage?

That’s why my profile is private :] yay for privacy options!! Thank you Tom :]

So when people try to bring up dirt on me, they can suck my left butt cheek.

  • I hope she wins that case. Millersville University, what a joke.

  • no, the pic looks incredibly silly and harmless.

  • haha no. thats so absurd.

  • They are deleting originality. Censorship abounds, it seems, in ridiculous extremes.

  • #1 she was of legal drinking age.  #2, there are no children in the photo.  #3no children are being given alcohol in this photo.  That would be like saying, if you are a teacher, you can’t consume any alcohol and have a photo of yourself doing so at your home.  This is just stupid.

  • of course not. but this is the land of nonsense.

  • the pendulum has swong HARD :(

  • Good thing I have nothing of interest on my MySpace!

  • No this is ridiculous. People use social networking sites for fun and as an “outlet.” Taking content posted on sites like that out of context is dangerous and irresponsible.

    Adam

  • what’s she drinking? i can’t tell she’s drunk. is she really underage?

  • Another life ruined by myspace.

  • NO! that’s insane.

  • prove thats alcohol id say… nothing indicates that. its just assumptions. it looks like a silly girl drinking out of a pretty BA Mr. Goodbar cup, lol.

either way… its her personal life. they have to judge off of her perfessional standing.

  • No, and who says its alcohol in the cup?
    Stunkin Fupid.

  • She was 25 when the picture was taken! What the fuckkkkkl!~>1j/3

  • Seems ridiculous to me.

  • Email her and tell her how ridiculous she is: Jane.Bray@millersville.edu

  • Or call her :) Heh… Phone: 872-3379
    Fax: 717-872-3856

  • Um, no.

    That’s INCREDIBLY stupid.

  • i don’t see how its their business in anyway.  there is no sign of affiliation with the school in the image, there is no sign really of who it is, half her face is covered, and really what does anyone care whats on myspace?

  • No, because what you do at work and what you do in private are two seperate things. She should never be told she can’t do something by anyone. As long as she keeps them sepereate it should not matter. I have three children and I wouldn’t have a problem if one of their teachers drank underage as long as they didn’t do it while watching my children!!

  • Who cares, that’s a pretty awesome hat.

  • No! These are the stupidest allegations against people I’ve heard involving myspace.

  • That did not make any sense. What happen on her myspace should stay private and out of the school business. What’s next, they are going to break into their student’s e-mails and hold them against what they have said in there. University these days are just pushing the boundaries of their student’s rights.

  • of course not, that’s ridiculous. the picture isn’t even bad. even if it was – i still don’t buy the “they posted bad pictures, that should affect their professional life” thing.

  • ha..jeez..

Just ask her to change it!

  • … but… she isn’t underage…
she’s old enough to drink if she can get a degree
how could she be promoting under age…

    life is getting ridiculous!
    stupid little idiots
    Myspace isn’t a PROBLEM

    *dies of anger*

  • they shouldnt deny her the job b/c of a MYSPACE picture.
    besides,
the picture wasnt even promoting anything.. “sinful”
they make it sound like she was crunk in the photo

  • That is horrible.. If anyone ever did that to me… =[]

  • She was over the age of 21 when the picture was taken.

You can’t tell what she is drinking.

My wife tells me the teaching certificate is thru the state of Pennsylvania and not the university so we don’t understand how they can tell her she won’t be getting one. All she has to do is take and pass the test.

    This is crazy.

    On the other hand…

Why is she only suing for $75,000? Why doesn’t she sue to also get her education degree? Isn’t THAT the main issue?

  • Just when I thought people couldn’t get more retarded over myspace. I hope she wins and ends up never having to teach for a living anyway because of the settlement.

  • thats rediculous

  • wow, that is rediculous.

  • What the hell is this world coming to?

  • I saw several people commenting on MySpace being part of the problem. I’ve been reading over the last several months that more and more employers are looking for potential employees online to see what they can find. So it’s not just what is on MySpace that can cause you trouble. Any blog or posted message in a public forum can float around for years and years. In fact, there are posts of mine from the mid ’90s that still show up when I do a search on my name. It’s somewhat scary.

  • as a student in the middle of getting their teacher liscence, i am disgusted by the actions of the college. the only thing they may have been not ok is the fact that the picture was most likely up during her student teaching period and students could have had access to it. however, most high school and middle school students are smart enough to know that there teachers are not little angels outside of the classroom.

ugh. i would be soooo pissed if i was denied my degree.

  • by the way, this is the first time i have seen all users in agreement. that should say something about the college.

  • ummm, thats kinda ridiculous. but since she wanted to be a teacher, it would have been smarter to keep her myspace clean or have a false name on it or keep the photos private or something. she is wanting a position where she will be a role model.

  • No. That’s ridiculous.

I hope she wins the lawsuit.

  • No, but I still abhor it when people post pictures of themselves drinking.

They could have just told her to take it off, jeez.

  • No, that’s stupid. Like Kes said she’s obviously old enough to drink legally if she has earned her degree.. it’s not as though she was slandering the dean, it’s just a goofy drunken photo shared online. People act as though they have no skeletons in their closet.

  • It’s one thing to engage in such behavior–we all make mistakes in our lives, but as a potential teacher, she was in a position to have influence over children’s lives and therefore should be living her life above reproach.  Not just in the classroom, but always, because you never know who may be watching (even though there were no children around during the particular incident, that’s not to say there has not been other events in which someone impressionable may have been watching.)

  • I also don’t blame the university, they are upholding their integrity of their education degrees by only awarding them to those who are worthy of the awesome task of teaching.

  • hmm here’s a good rule of thumb. DON’T DO STUPID THINGS AND POST THEM ON THE INTERNET, IF YOU ARE GONNA EDUCATE THE “NEXT GENERATION”.

  • but she’s old enough to drink.

  • that is the most ridiculous thing i’ve ever heard of

  • Ok, I think it’s completely rediculous, yet that woman was dumb. It’s all over right now that “people are losing their jobs because of myspace.” While I think it’s rediculous, any smart person is careful about what they put on the internet. It’s public territory and anyone can see it. If she had children as myspace friends, like if kids from one of her student teaching classes had her added on there, and they were surveying her site and a parent saw the picture, she could get in trouble just as much as if she wore the picture and the caption around in real life. I know that as a camp counselor, I’m extremely careful about what I say or post on myspace because I have a ton of campers as “friends”, and they look up to me as their role model. That woman had to know that whatever she put on the internet could possibly have been viewed by her school or students.

  • If she’s underage, I’d say it’s inappropriate. I’ve been a teacher and if I had to stand by high standards, so should all teachers.

  • u know, theres nothing in that photo that would say she was drunk. its heresay.

  • I don’t see a thing wrong with this picture (except the red eye). She’s clothed and drinking from an innocuous cup. Perhaps she should just change the title of her picture to “The Pirate Who Says Drinking Is Very, Very Bad if You Are Under 21″?

Somehow I feel there is a lot more to this story than we have been told. Besides, why should we English majors be given all the lushes?

  • I bet she’s not even a real pirate.

  • that’s such bullshit.

so if she shows cleavage in a picture, is that promoting porn!?

how GAY is the system these days? I would seriously sue the shit out of the teaching board or whatever for that.

  • Maybe she wasn’t 21 when she took that picture, but either way they’ll get sued and she’ll get her tuition paid back.

  • THAT is ri-freaking-diculous. She deserves the degree for all of the hard work she’s put in, not to mention the time it took, to get it.

  • haha dumb and dumber, law suit style

  • Strange… The teacher at my high school who got busted for drinking during work hours is still teaching. Oh right, he’s got tenure.

  • No, of course not.

  • No. I mean, she could have been drinking kool-aid. What’s up with the mindless censorship lately? Blame Don Imus?

  • good lesson on staying anonymous online right?  never be referencable by your legal name is my rule!

  • Just look at that picture. That woman has no sense of morality. Sinner!! SINNER!!!

  • That is ridiculous; of course not! I feel bad for her; there are plenty more people with incriminating MySpace pictures of themselves who have received teaching certificates. She was just the unlucky one.

  • wow that sucks.  I’d sue.

  •  no. that’s retarded.

  • she can drink and should be able to do so if she is 21… how in the world does that promote drinking for the under 21 crowd? gods i wish people would stop the morality police… you know, my teacher said that he wouldnt get fired unless he raped one of us in front of class with a joint in his mouth and a 6pack of beer in his other hand – and that’s the truth, some of the older teachers are incompetent and morally corrupt yet keep their jobs because we have a teachert shortage – but who wants to be a teacher if in order to get there you have to be a saint?

  • That is flat out rediculous.

  • she will win the suit 4 sure

  • Definately no!  Perhaps she should take the picture off of the Web, though!!

    AGREED!

  • a. This is not an ad. This is not premeditated conspiracy to corrupt children. lol. It’s certainly not promoting drinking. “Drunken” could also be a playful title, rather than a definitive one. I would find it hilarious if the accusers were so out-of-touch with reality that they mistook that chocolate-candy-related cup for a beer can lol.

    b. Should posting something on a personal blog/networking site be viewed as a public act? At the very least, it should not be viewed as intentionally a public act. If it is in any way it’s just like a stranger googling your chat logs and such. It’s more like a private act that the public can spy on. In any case, it should not be viewed as making any statement about someone’s personal career, atleast on purpose.

  • Absurd. they shouldn’t take that from her after all that work becuase of a photo on myspace.

    Golly.

  • That’s crap. Seriously. Whaat the hell were they thinking?

  • she completed her credits successfully.  she did what she needed to do to graduate with a degree in education and a teaching certificate.  she deserves it.

for an instiution that is supposed to be promoting an open mind and the constant seeking of knowledge, Millersville University is pretty stupid.

  • Makes you that much happier that we live in Xanga eh???

Altho being the devils advocate a teacher is supposed to portray a certain public outlook… and if she is putting the phrase drunken pirate under it then there doesn’t need to be proof of alcohol in that cup. Would you want a self proclaimed drinker teaching your 7 or 8 yr old???

but on the other hand it would have been better if they had requested she remove the pic. PS how did anyone know about it?? why would she make it known ??? i mean i have a fairly public job and no one i work with or could work with know the link to my site.

just my opinion.. for what its worth…

now bring on the hate comments

  • I thought for sure she went to some sort of uberconservative private school, but it looks like it’s a public university.  I would be SUING their pants off right now if I’d worked for an education degree and didn’t get it…

  • this is just pathetic. promoting underage drinking? are you kidding me??

  • not at all, if she’s over 21. plus, it’s a frickin’ myspace. not every child is going to know their teacher’s page…

  • That’s just stupid.

  • the glass says CHOCOLATE!

  • myspace is out of control.

  • Dumb, Dumb, and at minimum an over reaction on the Universitys part

  • No.
There is no way to prove she was drunk or what actually was in that cup.
    Besides,she is not underage.
I think the University is wrong for not allowing her to have the degree
    she worked for

  • she was promoting underage drinking eh? is SHE underage?

    that’s messed up.

  • I don’t understand why I had presumed that this woman was Black?

  • seems to me, she did the work, she met the requirements for their degree program, and she paid for those credits. services rendered, she should get the degree.

  • no … this is stupid!

  • I don’t think they have the right to deny her a teaching degree. What she does in he private time is her own business, as long as it’s not illegal. Last time I checked drinking was still legal.

  • How can they prove that her cup had alcohol? For all they know, it could be drinking chocolate. If it was wine that she was drinking.. she prolly would have gotten her degree

  • I think this is ridiculous. What is the world coming to?
Why even bother to try to acomplish anything in life when you are just going to be shot down in the end over a meaningless and practically innocentpicture that has nothing to do with what you are trying to achieve something. I could see if she was nude or something like that, but this?

  • That is absurd.  She should sue them.

  • No. And was it really alchohol? I heard it wasn’t really confirmed. But how did the dean figure she was drunk on myspace?

  • I don’t see what her personal networking site has to do with her professional life…

    hope she wins the lawsuit.
