Internet Photos
Allison Stokke has been in the news because of her photo being displayed on the internet. A photographer took her photo and it was placed all over the internet. She has been getting request for interviews. She had a video of her photo placed online. She is an 18-year-old high school pole vaulter.
A video was taken of her and it was placed on YouTube. It received over 150,000 hits. She has complained about how she has received so much exposure and has no control over her image. So the Washington post printed her story and it gave her even more attention. Here is the link: Link
I am going to ignore the issue of whether her image should be plastered all over the internet because it already is and everyone is discussing that. I am going to ignore the issue of whether she has brought this on herself. I want to ask a question that I think should be a little more obvious.
Should a high school let their athletes dress in outfits that skimpy?

Eh, it’s not that bad.
totally
Sounds like a parental guidance issue to me.
If they didnt, no one would attend the games
God bless America!
That’s not skimpy.
They’re aerodynamically sound, so when she pole vaults, there is minimal air resistance. It’s a bit skimpy, but effective, because literally the less clothes and the tighter they are, the higher/faster track athletes go.
Hahaha!
I don’t mind.
Look, in other countries… maybe we are kinda repressed to be sexualing the human body at every turn. Don’t get me wrong, I love 18 year olds, but why is this an issue?
We dont see enough skin may be the issue. We are uptight. Skin, any skin is sexual. And maybe it need not be.
“tease tease tease, you Americans are all the same…”
As a teacher, I have seen worse. There are two arguments to contend with, here:
1. It is skimpy. It invites lust. She would never wear that out on the town…and the like.
2. This is a track event. The less wind resistance, the better. It is a typical track uniform. No big deal.
Because I ran track in high school, I lean toward the second argument. Guys and girls of all sizes wear uniforms of that ilk. They may not all look like her, but they are in the uniform if they are in track.
I’ve… seen skimpier.
I think that it could afford a little more modesty without being considered cumbersome.
At a typical high school, most girls wear less then that to class every day.
It’s the sad truth..
Would you rather her be in a bathing suit type thing?… not a two piece, a one piece. There’s not much of a difference.
It’s a track uniform…
I think they are suitable for sporting events, outfits to cumbersome could pose serious risks, but for wearing during school, such as cheerleaders (at least at my old school, where they wore them every home game day and wore some other outfit at away ones, I think), I think it’s innappropriate. If it violates the dresscode they shouldn’t be allowed to wear them just because they participate in a certain sport.
I see the need for some sembalence of modesty, but next our swim teams will be wearing one piece suits with no cutouts that reach to their knees, with unflattering (but awesome, in some cases) horizontal stripes, and flowered swim caps if we worry too much. I do feel for the girl a bit, I can empathize, that would be hard, especially if it wasn’t her choice, or with permission.
Sexualizing I mean, damn spell check
I think it shows a bit too much skin, but it’s probably better for less wind resistance. I dunno. I’d never wear anything like that in public.
Geesh, my comment is almost as long as your post. I need to learn to shut up sometimes. I was just going to say that at least it’s a flattering (nah, probably just realistic) picture, as she is a pretty girl, she could have gotten attention for the sake of cruel laughs about her appearance or a terrible blunder.
It’s not bad. Tighter clothing equals less wind resistance and a faster speed. I think she’s dressed fine.
It is a bit skimpy for a uniform. People who are not as well figured as she is would probably have complaints about it if they were required to wear it. But on the other hand, it’s not slutty so I guess it’s fine. Maybe she just chose it for herself.
That is not skimpy. She’s pole vaulting. Do you really want extra baggage>
She is a female athlete in America, and for some reason people notice her body more than her skills. Athletes need to wear the proper attire on order compete. What this girl is wearing isn’t any different than what other females in her sport wear. Swimmers wear swimsuits and beach volleyball players wear bikinis. If you don’t like it, don’t watch.
Also, c’mon, she’s 18. Sure, she’s legal and good looking, but people need to find better things to do with their time.
There would be no reason to watch women’s sports.
She was dressed like that for sports during sports. I’d call that sports appropriate.
The world often does go a bit nuts over beautiful girls and women. She’s one of the most beautiful girls I’ve ever seen.
She’s broken national records as well? Wow, she has a number of things going for her right now.
She’s on track. Pun intended. Control over her image would be something she can look into.
Ankle-length dresses are a bad idea, if one is a pole vaulter. Entanglements ensue.
It’s a track uniform. Those have always been “skimpy”.
Maybe I’m a desensitized American, but that outfit isn’t terribly skimpy. For example, it doesn’t compare to any of the swimsuits I’ve seen people wear.
ha ha…you’re..funny.
i don’t really mind. i think that’s appropriate. you shouldn’t call it skimpy because it is athletic wear. it’s not like she’s walking around in any lace lingerie asking for some. no, instead, she’s wearing what’s comfortable for her and her pole vaulting skills.
maybe the attire is
for athletic purposes?
i don’t think thats too skimpy. especially if shes a pole vaulter
if it were any other sport i’d be like wtf.
she is very attractive and athletic. let her show off he body in such a setting.
it’s not as if she’s a regular skinny 16-yr-old, or worse a boysih 14-yr-old who only *thinks* she looks good.
This girl really does! dressing as she chooses as the age of legal majority is her prerogative.
aww a califoria girl! aint she cute? i dont see her outfit as skimpy..she is partipating in sports, after all.
out here in california, i have seen TOTALLY WORSE.
and yet you post here to give her more publicity when she doesn’t want it while at the same time you raise the possibility she might contract a stalker?
Are you out of your mind?
Pervert.
I’m not really too offended by it. But then again, I’ve become calous to the terrible way so many people dress. It would be nice to be more modest, but I’m really a lot more worried about how some others dress
thats about how anyone at the gym looks, let alone at a sporting event.
I do not see that outfit as skimpy.
all the track people prolly wear the same thing… its just two ton tina doesnt look as appealing… but good gosh… she looks amazing hahaha. so duh… ofcorse people will talk… an the media is stupid.
I guess you haven’t spent too much time at your local high school lately… looks standard to me for pole vaulting.
I think you could easily make it more modest without losing any aerodynamicy (just made that up). I used to dance and managed to remain modest. In fact, I had a boyfriend that thought I was drop dead sexy because I was modest, but dressed very well…make sense? And in fact I discovered later he wasn’t the only one. Anyhoo, it’s not about that…off on a tangent…she is dressed too sexy. Period. She is gorgeous and that is even more reason to make sure she dresses modest. I have a gorgeous niece. If she dressed like that…ugh…I can’t imagine.
What happened to modesty?….
I know those kinds of sports require certain outfits but couldn’t there be a little more to them?
Well, I s’pose they’ve gotta have an outfit they can actually do the sport in, but it might be just a bit on the skimpy side. But what isn’t anymore?
And as for the obvious question that you’re ignoring, how would it be her fault for some photographer putting the picture on the internet? That doesn’t even make sense. O_o
wow…… dang…… *drools*
It’s not that bad. Besides, I dont concern myself with what others are wearing. I believe everyone has a right to wear whatever they want in whatever situation.
Most of my friends (and some family members) run track, and they all wear similar outfits. It’s a uniform. I just feel bad that this particular girl is being exploited because she happens to look good in it. She has every right to be annoyed.
haha I remember when I was a kid, we used to watch the track team practice…. yeah, sure, it’s shady, but whatever.
Believe it or not, but you can’t pole vault in a full length skirt
I think for that event it is okay
i’ve seen and had to wear skimpier. in reality, it’s easier for athletes to function when they wear clothes that hug their body tighter and are shorter…
it says in the body of the article that the outfit is standard. she wouldn’t be able to pole vault as easily if she were in something looser, longer, etc.
What about male swimmers in Speedos?
That is not skimpy. It’s an athletic uniform. Just because people are attracted to her because she looks good in it doesn’t mean it’s skimpy or slutty.
well, for what shes doing she does need clothing that is not loose, so while it is attractive i must admit that it might not be wrong. Its not like she is wearing that going to dinner or bowling.
Plus, one can go to any fitness center and see girls/women in the same type of clothing. the real problem here is that shes 18 and HOT. Some people have a problem with that, i dont know if i do and its not her fault shes hot.. is it?
Daniel (doubledb)
skimpy??? what about those guys i see cutting their lawn all summer….with no shirts on??? or playing volley ball and basketball in the park…shirtless. oh, and the highschool boys with their pants hanging off their butts…
she looks great. And she is dressed appropriately for the event she is at. She is a good role model for others to get themselves in shape.
id tap that
People are desensitized these days, but seriously, if her shirt and her shorts were a few inches longer, this post wouldn’t even exist because this never would have happened to her. Modesty doesn’t have to mean wearing frumpy sweats.
That outfit is not skimpy at all! She just has an attractive body that compliments the outfit and a gorgeous face to match. Who doesn’t like eye candy?
A lot of male pole vaulters seem to do just fine without wearing short, tight, skimpy outfits.
Hmm, i don’t think thats actually skimpy. And, its logical to dress in such a manner when she’s doing sports. I have no issues with that, and she’s pretty hot so the more i don’t mind actually.
wow, i’d hate to say this, but for track uniforms. that’s not bad at all. i’m used to people wearing stuff like that.
goodness no. looks like it might be cutting off circulation. and if she had been in a not-so-skimpy outfitt this whole problem might have been avoided.
-Amber
damn she’s good looking.
but i totally think she should be covered up in 40 yards of woool at least.
Whatever the officials say, I am in agreement. Pass the binoculars please.
Christ, you know we were allowed to wear spandex shorts showing cameltoes in high school and I went to Catholic school. They just seemed to work better than mesh shorts, especially on pole vaults, which run the risk of your shorts being caught on the pole or other equipment. This girl however has the perfect figure and could be a model I don’t think it’s about her “skimpy” outfit.
Yes. Whatever works for the sport. Just don’t have skeezy ass photographers hanging around. I would have punched him in the throat.
Of course not! Everyone knows it’s a lot easier to pole-vault in a burqa.
Yes, why not!
Any other kind of clothing would probably get in the way of her sport. She’s not the one being sexual about it. Sure, she’s an attractive high school girl dressed in tight clothes, but she’s not asking to be victimized. She’s also not dressing that way to get sexual attention.
And the camera seemed to catch her at JUST the right time for a picture that makes her look like she’s trying to be sultry.
I don’t think that’s skimpy at all.
thats not skimpy!!!!!
just bc she has a nice bod and wearing tight clothes….aka athletic attire
If a girl whose ugly and had no curves….the clothes wont be so skimpy bc it wont look as nice on her.
Sad to say, that’s the usual. Whereas it would have been considered skimpy in the past, now it’s just the norm.
Someone mentioned that they shouldn’t be allowed to violate school dress code… and I completely agree. It isn’t right that the cheerleaders and athletes and whoever else gets to break the rules and suffer no punishment, but if someone outside of those groups wore the same thing (except, it wouldn’t be a uniform obviously), they would get in trouble.
Not cool.
A lot of male pole vaulters seem to do just fine without wearing short, tight, skimpy outfits.
<LI class=itemtimestamp>5/30/2007 12:16 AM YourOuterCritic
And I completely agree with him. The man has a point.
it’s not that skimpy.
Well, goddamn, that’s the most unintentionally sexy picture I’ve seen in a long time..
The whole issue with track outfits “wanting less wind resistance” goes too far.. my school’s girls running shorts actually look like they cover less of the ass than a pair of men’s boxers would.. I swear, their shorts are smaller than my own underwear.. which takes it too far, I say.
come on. It’s a track uniform. Yes they should…
Pole vaulters probably need to wear form fitting clothes anyway so I don’t think it’s too bad, although I don’t see why her midriff should be bared.
haha, i did track in school too, and most of the time the guys just didnt wear any top at all during practice (they wouldve done the same at events if it wasnt for the fact that we needed numbers and colors)…
it gets pretty sweaty and hot if you’re wearing a lot when running, especially in the sun… she cant help that she’s gorgeous unfortunately…
Oh, shoot! Someone photo shopped that woman’s face on my body. Now no one will believe that I really can pole vault.
was that the image being posted everywhere?
this is the first time i’ve heard about her so..
anyways. i don’t think that image is too skimpy.
The mature person in me says no.
The rest of me, being a high-school boy, says yes.
i think people shouldn’t even go there, if they decide no girls can’t wear outfits like that, then we’ll have a fiasco over womens rights. they could argue well cheerleaders wear skimpy stuff so why can’t I. if she really doesn’t like the attention then maybe she should be the one to decide what she wears to vaulting practice. either way, she can’t control what people say and think.
The wind resistance thing is a valid point, and things also need to be clingy/elastic so as not to get caught on anything…my daughter is a gymnast, so lives in her swimsuit-type gym suits. They don’t want them wearing looser t-shirts or shorts so they don’t get caught up in them when they are working on equipment or being spotted. Most female gymnasts are in great shape; I assume pole vaulters and other athletes are, too. What she’s wearing is a uniform, of sorts, for her sport.
The only thing I can’t figure out with the pole vaulter is why does her midriff have to show? Do the guy pole vaulters wear midriff-exposing tanks, or do they cover their stomachs? That’s the only thing I’d question.
Uh, I kind of think that outfit is less skimpy than the ones most cheerleaders wear. Plus when she is pole vaulting it doesn’t allow anyone to see her undies, unlike cheerleading skirts (or whatever they may be called).
Typically I am not a fan of scanitly clad high schoolers but as an athlete I can see where these things are better. Her clothes need to be tight so they don’t mess up her event and also, as mentioned in several previous posts, tight clothes=less wind resistance.
I do, however, think that maybe she could have found a top that covers her belly. I have tops like the one she is wearing that I wear when I run that go down past the top of my shorts.
Sadly, she’s experiencing what any actor/actress expereinces when they become famous. Photographers are relentless and fame comes with a harsh price.
She is pretty hot as well.
Given the nature of her athletic ability, the clothing she needs is what she is wearing. I don’t know anything at all about pole vaulting, but common sense says anything more would provide resistance when running and jumping.
I realize that in things with gymnastics you need to have tighter clothing, but that’s going a little too far…
They didn’t make ‘em like that back when I was in high school … uniforms or girls.
If she is uncomfortable with the attention she is getting now then she should not continue to pursue her sport because she is only going to get more attenion.
The outfit is aerodynamic. However, she could wear shorts that cover her midriff if she is uncomfortable with the attention she receives because of the outfit.
She could always do interviews in jogging suits that cover her up and state that she is pro-modesty.
Wow, she’s hot. And no, it’s not skimpy… it’s a sports get-up, like a gymnast or maybe a speed skater.
Wow, the pole vaulters at my school don’t even dress like that…
And the only girl on the pole vaulting team is my friend!
Quite frankly, I don’t even think my friend would wear that.
It’s wayyy too skimpy.
Pft, and schools these days are trying to control our dress code. Why don’t they try controlling THAT.
What a crybaby.
only if they have bods like that…
thats a pretty typical pole vaulter uniform… i dont see why this is such a big deal..
its unfortunate though that she must worry about crazy people on the internet
I don’t think it’s that skimpy
I’d say it’s appropriate for the situation. There isn’t anything too revealing and if she had anything to be revealed I think they could work something out where she wouldn’t have to wear the same outfit.
She’s in high school?? Holy cow. And I don’t think I’d let my daughter dress like that.
It’s not much skimpier than what a cheerleader wears, is it. And it’s purpose is less decorative. The shorts are a bit short and low, but that type of short seems fairly functional for an atheletic event.
Honestly, it’s a sport. You have to wear a certain type of clothing that’s going to be skimpy. I was in drill team and we were often covered up head to toe, but in spandex that left nothing to the imagination. That’s just the way it is. You can’t rehearse dance moves and see what someone’s doing with their leg if they’re in baggy clothes. For this girl, if she jumps and is wearing more clothing it’ll hinder her performance.
WOW she’s hot.
no
dude… ITS TRACK! lol. even GUYS wear spandex at track meets. its not “skimpy” its dressed for the conditions.
however she is very attractive. this is her fault… if she would have eaten tubs of cookie dough and chased them with chocolate syrup as a kid, she would be fat and gross and no one would care.
It’s athletic wear…who cares?
have you seen Olympic pole vaulters they are wearing almost the same thing… but omg she is gorgeous!!
We wore clothes like that in high school cross country (the shorts were just as short, and although the top was a bit longer and looser, it was also fairly see-through) without garnering a great deal of attention because everyone else had similar uniforms. I don’t think its an innapropriate uniform because it is functional for her sport.
Additionally, I think that body wise, she is a good role model. She is not overly thin and is clearly in good shape. I think she looks better than most celebrities today because she looks healthy and fit. So good for her!
She can’t help it if she’s gorgeous. However, showing the belly with the skimpy little shorts drives a man and boy crazy. ‘Course the moderm women don’t understand that …they think men and women are the same. It’s a tough call. She can’t help it that images of her are now making there way around the world but the reason is partly because of the those shorts showing her rump nicely, if she was a guy you’d know what religion he was, and flat belly exposed is too much. But, I want to look ….and look and I now I would like to snuggle with her …which is just wrong …wrong I tell you! No! no! yes! no no no! yes yes yes ..no yes
When you get this way the answer is probably NO!
not really, she dose need to move a lot.
Americans are prudes. She’s wearing as much as most high schools wear on a regular basis. It doesn’t seem like much to our generation, but if every girl were like that I don’t think we’d think much about it. That said, our society on the whole looks at a girl like that and thinks inappropriate thoughts. I dont’ know how to answer your question.
It’s sports, folks………the ones making an issue have ‘issues.’
track athletes have to, it’s so the can move faster…..you need to wear a uniform to your job. It’s the same way basketball players wear loose shorts
Well, that’s the normal attire for pole vaulters…
That is not a skimpy uniform, women’s volley ball has skimpy uniforms. She has on a long tank top, and shorts that thankfully no longer fly open or up as they run or or jump. Have you seen what you used to see when you were not trying to, thank goodness running apparel has improved so much since the 70s and 80s.
Good for her for being, such a great athlete and as a result so healthy and fit.
If it helps them perform better in their event, sure. It’s kind of inappropriate, though.
Form the perspective of a male high schooler, fuck yes.
I’ve seen worse walking around the high school campus.
I’ve seen skimpier at high school track meets. plus, girls wear stuff like that to school and out and about all the time. at least she has a valid reason for wearing it.
She’s wearing the proper attire required to vault. If she was walking around from math to english like that, that’s a different story.
wow she is so hot.
here’s what i want to know. Who’s the authority here on what is and isn’t appropriate?
My vote would be no.
She’s wearing the same thing as everyone else…what’s the harm in that?
i think a short skirt and high kicks are more provocative personally.
That’s not skimpy at all – that looks like appropriate clothing for that type of activity.
How is that skimpy? One, she’s a pole vaulter and cannot have lots weighing her down. Two, it’s hot when you’re doing sports.
People just need to stop being insecure.
Have you ever seen high school cheerleaders or water polo players?
Compared to them, it isn’t really that skimpy, is it? It is no different than what the other people in the competition wore, and since none of the other players had this kind of attention, then we can safely assume it wasn’t her clothes, but her beauty, that caused this to happen. If she doesn’t like it, she can either get a hideous disfigurement or hire a lawyer to control her image.
Meh.
I want to thank you for your recent advice concerning my blog. Traffic has started coming in slowly and I’ve found a great new premise for my blog. Check it out!
Hey everyone! Check out my blog!
If you got it, flaunt it;). I hope that the pervs leave her alone though.
i can see it from both perspectives. if the girl didnt want to be looked at, she wouldn’t have worn such little clothing. i do agree with the less clothing and tightness = wind resistance.
the skimpiness does interfere with the true purpose of the sport.
but hey, whats life without a little fun?
I agree with porcelain tears
it has nothing to do with the uniform used but rather the mind and thoughts of those who are looking at her.
A) Thats not skimpy, thats normal for sports. Don’t forget that we used to do the Olympics naked 2000 years ago.
B) I don’t care what anyone says to me, she’s amazingly beautiful.
’nuff said…
well it is a standard track uniform. she just happens to look especially good in it.
ummmm, it’s sports
my old uniform was more so. its not an “appropriate” thing- its a “you’re faster and more able to move well in that sort of thing” thing… and its more dressed than bathing suits- which is what swimmers compete in, so i dont see the problem.
a lot of track teams in tx have uniforms that are a lottttttttttt skimpier… like bathing suit worthy. i don’t get it…. aerodynamics??
ALL girl athletes dress like that. It’s not skimpy at all. When you’re running like hell & having to jump as high in the air as possible, that is what you wear. If you wore baggy clothes, it’d hurt your performance. It slows you down. Every other girl athlete wears the same thing. Get a grip!
one; she looks like she’s twelve.
two; don’t they have to wear stuff like that?
dont the photograpers need permission before putting their pictures on the internet?gorgoeus or not?not saying shes not gorgoeus…oh & guys in speedos r nasty!!!
yeah sure wind resistence blahblahblah…. but it’s really sad that girls choose to cheapen themselves by dressing this way and visually prostitute themselves to any man. she really did ask for the publicity she got.
If they look like she does, hell yeah!!
haha. you should see my high school’s track uniforms.
