  • Grammar Nazi

If you saw a grammar or spelling error in someone’s post, would you correct it in the comment section?

  • No but it makes me mad. And “grammar nazi” makes me think “soup nazi” which makes me think NO SOUP FOR YOU!

  • I’ve done it, but only to the worst ones.

  • No. I’d just block that person for ever! lol jk

  • @Ale_x_a - GRR YOU BEAT ME!! Dx

  • Yep. I surely would. Bad grammar must be wiped off the face of the earth! Good Grammar Supremacy!!! Lmao. XD

  • I USE MY GRAMMAR MISTAKES TO KILL JEWS?

  • ys i wood becuz i spl gud al teh tim.

  • i’m already on xanga too much as it is. that would be way too much work. but yes, it does bother me.

  • A lot do it and some of them are even nice about it

  • not on xanga. but i do in real life/on facebook (if i know them well enough). i HATE bad grammar.

  • Nope, I think that’s kinda rude.

  • I can’t stand grammar Nazis.
Once when I visited my old high school after a first semester of college, I said something about my English classes and how they taught me a lot. Then this little pipsqueak turns around and says “You must not have learned anything….It’s ‘well’, not ‘good.’” Took tons of willpower to not punch the little freshman in the face.

Grammar is important, but don’t be a grammar Nazi. It’s annoying, and it takes a lot to annoy me.

  • No.  That’s so obnoxious.  I’ve spelled things wrong before (even though i’m good at spelling and grammar) and people have said they “can’t respect my post because [insert word here] is spelled wrong.”  Give me a break.

  • Grammar error? That’s worded rather awkwardly.

    Error in grammar? Grammatical error?

    Touché.

  • @Queen_of_You188 - haha my comment was a bit shorter.

  • No, I think it’s really anal when people do that. This is Xanga, no one should take it that seriously.

  • I’m an English major, so it’s hard for me not to correct grammar, but I’d rather not be a douche. I usually only comment on egregious errors and mistakes that can be misconstrued.

  • hahahaha depends on the felony. if it’s god awful, then yes i would. if it’s ONE “your/you’re” mix up i’d prob let it slide.

  • I usually send a message if it matters.

  • Usually no, but on this occasion…. It’s “grammatical error,” not “grammar error.” Or you could say “error of grammar.” Tee-hee.

  • I’m cool with punctuation errors but when the grammar gets bent, I’m pretty much done reading.  A few errors here and there, fine.  But if what becomes the theme in your post is not what you’re writing about but rather me thinking how the hell is it possible for you to even write in the first place, I just shut down.

  • It depends on the mistake.

If it is just another word (warn became warm) or I somehow find it funny, yes I will. :P

  • Why woulf I correct sombodys speling or grammer erors.

  • I used to, but…no one cares.

I even have a song! IT’S POSSESSIVE. IT’S IS POSSESSIVE!

  • @SisterMom1954 - Isn’t it “For Pete’s sake”?  (sorry, I couldn’t resist) hehe

  • No, I’d stop reading all together and leave the page. I have this thing for perfection even though I’m far from it, but it drives me crazy when people mix up “you’re” with “your” and “they’re” and “there”.

Didn’t you learn this in third grade?! Jesus!

I also hate it when people use 1337 speak. They’re raping the English language more than Stephanie Myer.

  • only if they were being a dick.

  • nooo, because I get the point… haha

  • I teach English and I cannot stand spelling and grammatical errors…I would never correct someone (except a student!) but when reading comments online with bad spelling/grammar, my first thought is always “Learn the English language!” Harsh, I know, but it drives me nuts when people can’t seem to master the most basics of their mother tongue.  I can’t stand when people use it’s instead of its, and than instead of then.  There are others, but those are my pet peeves.

I almost had a car accident driving away from a Taco Bell recently, at 10:45,pm which had OPEN signs in its window, signs saying “open until 11″  and all the lights on – all my daughter and I wanted was a cold drink after a long, late concert – and when I pulled up to the window, we were told by the high school girl working there, “We be close.”  Just about popped a wheelie.

  • It depends on how bad the error was.  If it was a case of a sentence saying something completely opposite than the author intended (as in, it didn’t go along with the rest of the paragraph/post, etc.), I would correct it.  For a small spelling/grammar mistake, though? Nah.

  • @Legendairy - Depends on what part of Hicksville you are from where I am from it is “Well fer Pete sakes” if ya want to get a tech about it LOL

  • It would be highly irregular if I did. I tend to write all over the place on occasion in my blog (if not at all times) lol…the way I see it is that if I cannot be relied upon to be perfect, I have no right to expect perfection from anyone else.

  • Well, considering “xanga” isnt capitalized, its kind of a predetermined – i dont care- attitude.

  • If I have a comment to make apart from pointing out a spelling error, then yes I will include a mention of the spelling area in that comment.

Otherwise, it’s too much work.  Usually the errors I see are just typos anyways.

  • It depends.  I saw a pulse about “Christians Day” once.  I had to correct that one. :)

  • I am an admitted spelling nazi. Grammar doesn’t bother me as much.

  • Only if I’m trying to annoy them.

I know you haven’t noticed my absence for the past 4 months, but I missed you alot Dan.

Hey, do you rememeber when you agreed to be my study-buddy on someone’s XTV? I still rememeber it. It was one of the happiest days of my life.

  • It depends upon how well I know them. Sometimes I do even if I don’t know them.

One of my best friends printed this poster out, framed it, and gave it to me.

  • no way..i hate people that do stuff like that :)

  • no. i don’t even fix my own grammer mistakes even when i know they’re there haha.

  • I usually only call people out on words that don’t exist.  Like irregardless.  NOT A WORD.  That said, my boyfriend spells everything phonetically, so I’m just used to the bad spelling now.  Of course, if the grammar structure is so bad that I can’t read it, I’ll just stop reading and leave.

@darkoozeripple - I <3 you for this.  Can we be grammar police partners?!  :O

  • no, but don’t think I wouldn’t notice it… :x
Grammar mistakes drive me nuts, even though I shorten words and such sometimes, I’m mainly talking about the two, to, and too words and the you’re and your. omg -.-

  • No, I don’t get paid to sit around and correct poor grammar.

  • Xanga isnt a college thesis paper. If it’s one or two errors but I get what the person means, I dont say anything. If they got like the meaning of something wrong, I’ll correct politely. I hate when people comment & be nasty about it like they’re all knowing or some shit. Being smart is one thing but being snooty about it shows you lack common sense & manners.

What I DONT like at all is when people talk in constant netspeak or shorthand. If it’s to the point I have to decode it like a foreign language, I skip it entirely. Or when people talk “lyk dis 2 luk cool”. SO ANNOYING!!!

  • @striemmy - That’s a good time to do it too. LOL. I’ve seen people comment on mean people’s post like this: “Not only are you ignorant, you can’t fucking spell either dumbass! And you have nerve to talk”. Haha! Makes me crack up every time.

  • No pulse for you!

  • Well, no! As much as I like using and reading correct grammar and spelling I have the following observations.

As several others have commented, it’s easy to make typos, particularly late at night, in a hurry and fumbling about on this laptop. I’ve already corrected about five in this.
The other point is that the grammar and spelling usage is a good gauge of the comprehension level of those who criticise you.
Also I am not American and use International English, so I spell some words different, like harbour, favourite, criticise, etc.

  • @HeartOfPandora - and hit ungrammatical people with truncheons? Definitely.

  • If I know someone just slipped up, I would tell them so they can fix it. If it’s an -ish site, that’s just pitiful because they are supposed to have “editors” who are supposed to… dundundun… check things over and edit errors in the posts before approving them.

  • Know, butt iht reelie bugz mee.

  • I am not a grammar nazi at all.. I try my best to spell everything correctly.. but yeah.. I really suck at spelling lol.

I re read my blog and catch my incorrect grammar with enough time to change it before anyone notices… but sometimes I just let it slide.. I don’t mind being corrected. Just be nice about it.

  • DAN FIND ME A GRAMMAR NAZI
NEED THEM TO PROOFREAD MY PAPERS :)

  • I usually do.

  • I’d be really annoyed, but I wouldn’t bother taking the time to correct it.

  • I have to admit, i do find it irritating. -__- However, it is important to realize that English hasn’t always been spoken or written in the way we use it today. Eventually what we see as “incorrect” will be overused to the point where it is viewed as proper acceptable English.

  • doez dis bOtHa yOo?

  • I would want to and I would correct it in my head, but I wouldn’t type it in the comment section. It’s on them – if they care to correct their grammar, or they don’t care, it’s all on them.

  • It would be nice if they had a spell checker in the comments box.

  • If it’s pretty bad, then yes. I can understand a missed period, but misspelled words or incorrect words? Got to put my foot down. >.>

  • Oh definitely not, haha.

If it changes the meaning of a sentence, as in, if it’s important, and if I know the person, yeah. I’ve only done it once, that was on Dave’s site. Otherwise, I wouldn’t bother. They’re everywhere.

  • No usually not.

  • No. Why should I correct them when my grammer can be just as embarrassing!

  • @CrystallineFigurines - I agree, the arrogance involved in thinking you are called upon to correct all the lesser bloggers in the world just makes me laugh. If you want good grammar don’t visit my page.

  • @Kevin_is_a_pirate - YES YES YOU DO. Get with the times man.

  • No, I find it rude when people do.

  • have done it before.

  • No.  I don’t think grammar errors are all that important.  Lots of people type fast.  It doesn’t need ridicule.

  • Only if it’s something that drastically changes the meaning of the post. For instance, if somebody writes about “kissing in pubic” I would probably point out the spelling error. However, I’m more likely to do that in a private message than in a comment.

  • I gave up that quixotic mission long ago. I prefer to police myself only and mention misused words to just my closest chat buddies.

  • No. But  if the person is my friend, I might message them about it, just to be nice. But I rarely–like never ever correct people on it.

  • Not really.  Maybe if someone wrote a story and is asking for proofreading . . .

I have to make sure all of my own writing has perfect grammar, punctuation, and spelling, though.

  • Too much ‘grammar nazis’ on xanga already O_o

  • @Keeko1 - Too “many”. And Xanga is capitalised.

  • Most of the time…and if it’s featured…absolutely!  Shame on the editors for letting things pass.

  • no. misspelling is a right

  • @Schristian - Beat me to it.  Comment WIN!

  • knowing me, I’d probably not catch it.

  • It depends. If people are saying “grandma’s” instead of “grandmas” when they’re talking about more than one grandma, than yes it bothers me. A lot. Though that’s not a spelling error. I guess it’s more of a punctuation error. But..still.

  • It irritates me when people are pedantic about stuff like that. I do my best with the grammar in my posts, but having the Grammar Police snarkily tell me I’m an idiot for some minor mistake would probably rub me the wrong way.

On the other hand, sometimes bad or overdone writing jumps out at me. Especially my own. One day I may just be the little hypocrite and do a post about grammatical things that people should probably correct. LOL!

  • @everlastte - I agree… I have a grammar nazi friend and I get mad when she corrects me (not mad, but SUPER annoyed), okay I guess that counts as mad… it’s really super annoying…

Since she’s away for college we write letters sometimes, and I wrote her a letter with my doodles all over the envelope. It had a stick person saying something, and when I got my letter from her she doodled all over it, and also had a stick person correcting what my stick person said on her letter… that was SUPER lame… ahaha, couldn’t she just draw a stick person saying something else? I don’t even remember what I my stick person said that was so grammatically incorrect.

I just hate that she acts like she’s the best writer and knows how to use punctuation correctly, when in reality I’ve caught so many things wrong on her papers… Whatever, It’s just annoying that she’s a grammar nazi… She says it proud too… lol, I’d just rather be grammatically correct not a grammar nazi.

Anyhoo, I should probably work on my grammar… but eh, grammar nazi’s are bad.

  • No. I see that typos and spelling mistakes all the time but if I did that I’d look like a jerk. Besides, Xanga is a place populated enough that I could spend literally all of my time on here doing just that if I wanted to. Waste of life!

  • I make mistakes, and would never correct a mistake in the comments of their post. That is rude, what if they were just in a rush and didn’t get to proof read. I just hope they see the mistake, and correct it later before someone else does and insults them.

  • it depends… I admin an online forum and if I keep seeing the same obnoxious misspellings over and over (by the same two or three people usually), I just edit their posts to make them say the right word. :p it bugs me that much. “I sware” … “excersize” … bleh.

  • I find it hilarious when people berate others for bad grammar but then make a grammatical error themselves. everybody makes typos. That’s how your/you’re and there/their/they’re mistakes happen: typos!
But on yahoo answers someone asked a question that was something along the lines of “Is the recession causing people to have worster jobs?” and i had to point it out…>.<

  • I was watching the news last night and saw a sign, “Pray  for the miners and thier families.”

I turned to my soldier and said, “They spelled ‘their’ wrong.”

“Wow, you’re a fucking nerd,” was the ever so appropriate reply.

  • I feel like if you’re on a site like Xanga, a place where everything is WRITTEN, then you need to be able to write well. Maybe you don’t have the best sentence structure and having a good flow isn’t your strong point, but I would think basic spelling isn’t beyond reason. Especially when explorers like Firefox give you spellcheck already. Will I correct it? Probably not, unless we’re arguing and it’s one more thing to needle them with, but if you happened to type “your” instead of “you’re” one time out of five, I’m not going to bring it up.

  • Probably not. It’s annoying when people do that to me. However, when people spell things like “rely” when they mean “really” or “liek” when they mean “like”, etc…I do want to smack them.

OH….one time though, someone came to my blog about homeschooling and told me how it doesn’t work, public school is so much better…blah, blah, blah….and they couldn’t even spell their job title right, nor did their sentences make any sense. So….if you are going to talk about educational topics, you should probably able to spell and use proper grammar (especially if attacking another person’s viewpoint.)

  • Hahahaha no, but it does bug me.

Besides, you people spell words wrong on a daily basis without even knowing. “Favorite” pshhh….it’s never correct with the u :)

  • That’s like bashing an ugly bitch’s dress when her face is the issue.

It’s more enjoyable to attack substance than being tangentially absorbed in fucking grammar.

  • I wouldn’t.  Unless it is someone I, personally, know.

  • @OurUnspokenTrust - lol, that’s my online lingo.

  • Only if we were in some sort of argument and I was angry.

  • No, but I might make a comment about their education or intelligence.  If it was once, whatever, but if it was “omg lyke u noe i am the wondurfulz persan in da world mk?” I’d have to comment.  It’s hard to walk away from that (and facepalming) without throwing a punch to the idiot writing it.

  • No.  They don’t bother me that much.  I make them myself when I don’t pay attention and I’ve become used to seeing them from grading papers and essays.

  • No, I am not that rude

  • Oh…I know someone who’ll do…lol but personally I don’t think I’ll correct it. I do have some grammar problems in my posts cos I forget to read the whole thing first before I hit the publish button, when I realize it I go ahead and edit it. Sometimes grammar errors in posts are just accidental ~ like typos. Most common are the you’re & your! xD

  • I find those kind of people to be extremely obnoxious.  Seriously, do you really have to waste your time fixing the most minor mistakes made by someone else?

  • @CrystallineFigurines - I get that all the time too

I mean really! I have a life outside of xanga, so sue me!
It just shows immaturity to get that hung up over a few misspelled words.  Spelling is  not a reflection of intelligence.

  • @XxFireXboltxX - hahah I no tht ws about mE

    th h0l3 51t. m@k35 mE LOL evn n0w.  s0m3tIms its @ll 2 obvi0u5 ppl ddnt gr0w up 0n th n3t. Exsp w3n th3y g3t @ll grmer nzi 2 val1dAt.
Nt do1ng blg5 n l33t is r3ly an0y1ng  2 Me. So I wnt 2 typ3 f@st3r, 5u3 mE.  You don’t see me picking apart your annoying proper English on the net now do you?  Or pointing out all you spelling mistakes?

really, does all of momaroo have sticks shoved up their asses and graced with the ability to hold grudges for over a month?  My sentences made perfect sense thank you.

  • If it’s ridiculous.

Then again, if your sole worth rests within your grammatical skills, you might not want to wish to share.  I did growing up and then the same people come back to haunt me like everything else.

I can and explain why most of the time, though I’ve forgotten some technical things.  It just doesn’t sound right to me other times.  Yeah, yeah, I get what they are saying.

    Content.

If you are sharing random thoughts, it’s going to be messy – and random.  I don’t think that this is professional publishing.

  • Grammar, no.
Spelling, if it was just once and possibly a typo, no, if they used the word frequently and kept spelling it wrong, yes, I would tell them.

  • Nope.  Grammar Nazi’s are super annoying. Just don’t read it, if it’s that bad.  Not that hard.   If you’re going to correct someone’s grammar or spelling, make sure you’re 100% perfect with it as well, or you’re nothing but a hypocrite.  An annoying hypocrite at that!

  • I usually only correct the statement if it is horrendously wrong.
    For example;
“Whn ppL Tlk LYKE dis all Da Tyme, I fixxxxx ITt!”
“When people talk like this all the time, I fix it.”
    Reasons why?
    1. Like, and Time have the same amount of letters as Lyke and Tyme.
    2. I hate odd capitalization unless it is a name/ business.

and 3. Who talks like that in real life? Lil’ Wayne?

  • Nah, I don’t be obnoxious and make a big deal about it to them. I like good grammar like the next grammar nerd, but I am not an English teacher. It is not my job to go around and correct people’s grammar. If the content of a post is good enough, I can look past a few errors. It does get on my nerves though when a post is chock full o’ grammatical errors and misspellings.

  • Nope because I know mine is kinda bad.  :0)

  • not on a private site, but on an -ish site, yes. they supposedly have editors.

  • It depends. If it is something as simple as a split infinitive or a comma splice, then probably not. If someone uses the wrong “to” (too, two) or “there” (their, they’re) or “your” (you’re) then absolutely. I cannot abide the destruction of the King’s English.

  • @quicksandbuddy - I’m with you.  I used to teach English composition and much as I hate bad grammar and spelling, I think it’s presumptuous and pedantic to nitpick over it at a social site.  If I saw something that was so horrific that I really felt a need to speak up, I’d do it in a private message, not humiliate the person in public.  I think people who do it publicly are just trying to show off how much smarter they think they are than the person they are correcting.

  • @trunthepaige -  “

    “A lot do it and
some of them are even nice about it”   Wait…you correct someone on their spelling and grammar when you can’t even spell “I” and leave the period off of your sentence?   Tsk tsk!  No soup for you!  LOL

  • @BrassMonkeyOriginals - No I never do that and that of course why I did not say “I”.

  • I once got in a heated argument with a 13-year old blogger because she punctuated only with exclamation points, regardless of the sentence structure, and clearly had no idea how to properly use the words “their, there, they’re, your, and you’re”, and caused my retinas to implode a little bit. Her angry comments were quite hilarious.

  • I figured you were going to misspell something there. Haha.
