X-Ray Vans
The Department of Homeland Security and law enforcement agencies are “buying and deploying mobile X-ray vans.”
The vands can see into the interior of vehicles. The problem is they can also see through clothing. They can also see through buildings. Here is the link: Link
Do you think it is wrong for the government to use X-ray vans?

That’s interesting… I don’t know, honestly.
sure why not it’s not like we really have a say
The government can and will do whatever they want. However, I find this fascinating.
It’s fine to use them. The methods of a search aren’t so important, and I’d argue that this is a superior method, as it’s non-invasive. The only thing that really matters is that the use complies with the 4th Amendment and precedents.
Cars: Yes. There is a diminished expectation of privacy. Public roads.
Homes: No. Unwarrented search. Invasion of privacy.
Why did I think of the sneaker Vans? Those would have been cool — sneakers that let you see your bones.
@grammarboy - There’s a Supreme Court case out there involving thermal imaging of homes. The Court gave government officials the *tsk, tsk.*

It’s not just the invasion of privacy I find particularly disturbing, but the exposure to x-rays as if it’s just no big deal.
You’re worrying me again, dan!
X-rays put out a lot of radiation. I wonder how they’re doing that.
I wonder how this ties in with breast cancer awareness.
They’ve been using them to search trucks entering military bases for years. You have to be parked and they drive very slowy by as they xray. They also move you away from the vehicle so as not to expose you to radiation. As long as they follow the law and don’t search illegally, more power to them. Problem is, most tools, put into the hands of the government, will sooner or later be abused.
lol surely we shall see just how many of those vans do not end up in flames.
Guess we’re all gonna have to buy those under-clothes pasties after all.
Yes, I think it’s wrong.
It’s a huge invasion of privacy. I have no problem with them being used at ports and border crossings, scanning cargo containers. But I have a problem with being x-rayed (searched) without my knowledge or consent. The article was disturbing because of the deliberate vagueness of the company regarding who they’ve sold these things to and exactly how they’re being used.
They can also see through flesh and blood…?
But yeah, they’re a major invasion of privacy =/
I don’t see how seeing through clothes is a problem, its not like they are seeing you naked, they are basically just seeing your bones and tissues. Not very sexy if you ask me. Whatever, if you wanna see my bones go ahead.
I’ll take them seeing an x-ray of my boobs over them not seeing the many pounds of explosives/drugs hidden in the truck in front of me.
Just saying.
However, as others have stated, I would also worry about the levels of radiation being shot through my body to produce these images.
Also, I was going to read the link, but then I saw that it was from Fox News. I am disappoint (but I read it anyway).
Sorry.
@LyricallyCharged - lol that’s what I thought of too X)
Wow, the government REALLY has nothing better to do besides making creep vans that are now legal and “helpful.” Radiation=bad, seeing through my house and clothes=really bad. And you know the guys who drive this van are going to take advantage of it…
Well, that would save me money from getting my X-rays from the doctor’s office
They get to see all the boobs they want now!
weird…didn’t know they had those
The government isn’t like ordinary people. It has no interest in boobs.
BUILDINGS?! Huge invasion of privacy.. and how strong do the waves have to be to see through buildings? Will it hurt people? o_O
@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - Everyone loves boobies!!!
@lightnindan - that makes me feel better, but that’s also a pretty drawn out process, correct?
If the truck’s already running, it takes about a minute.
I personally have nothing to hide so this really doesn’t phase me. Unless the government starts cracking down on dime bags, I think I’m good.
@LyricallyCharged - lol i thought of the same thing
This seems like a definite violation of the 4th Amendment to me.
It doesn’t personally bother me. Are there really intimate details that an x-ray is going to show? I wasn’t aware that our skeletal structure was something we were embarrassed to show.
Based on previous supreme court decisions (particularly the one involving a thermal scanning device that showed temperature differences on the roof of a house) I believe that this technology will be found to be unconstitutional.
Vands? What? You make spelling errors?? And here I thought you were perfect. You let me down, dude. You let me down.
@mangiarelamerda - Just read the link, they say it can scan a vehicle in about 15 seconds.
what if we get cancer
@mangiarelamerda - Problem is, that kind of thinking is what allows our rights to be taken away by the government. I’m not guilty, so it doesn’t effect me. If we allow them to step on the rights of the guilty and outcast, it’ll only be a matter of time before they step on ours.
eeeergh. how did i know the source was going to be fox news?
glenn beck talked about them on his show. have they actually started using these things…?
I work for DHS, I didn’t know we were buying these. Sweet.
I studied the case Elegastposted in a class, and as it stands, yes it’s illegal to use such technology to search anything where there is an expectation of privacy without a warrant. Now, if such technology is in common use by the public, the govt won’t need such a warrant. I don’t think we’ve gotten there yet.
And then we get into idea of whether cars are protected by an expectation of privacy. I certainly see them as such and this case give such a right to a phone booth.
But yes, it’s a huge breach of privacy and a very scary idea not only for that breach but because of the possible health effects. No one goes around wearing lead clothes! And if I consider my car my space, wary to even let my parents drive it, there is no way I’m happy with the govt getting a look in side.
Cancer machine?
@lightnindan - ah, i never clicked the link, my fault. but, without clicking the link, i only assumed. “excuse me sir, please step out of your vehicle… and away from your vehicle.”
@lightnindan - very true. i was just being honest. let em search me, i guess. they always do what they want in the end anyway.
It’s only worng if they prohibit me from owning the same devices so I can go around seeing through women’s, I mean people’s clothes. (smile)
it depends on how the x-rays are used. They could not just go around x-raying randomly. They would have to have probable cause
It seems like a good idea in high drug areas as well as border areas.
See, I thought that was just some crap Alex Jones was freaking out about just to get ratings. But, if it’s real, then that kind of sucks. What happened to being able to breathe without the government thinking we’re instantly trying to make bombs?
In our home its an invasion of privacy. Its ridiculous what panic allows people to do.
Radiation already surrounds us, do we seriously need more?
I’m also against parents searching kids rooms unless they have legitimate reasons, and I think this about the same. I will stop driving. No, really.
But yes, as some others have said – military bases, across the borders.. That makes sense. Those are dangerous places. But roads? Euch. Big brother much?
nvm i went back and read the link, i think as long as they put extensive guideline laws in place, and people stick to them, then it might be helpful in high risk areas mentioned
Whoa! That’s total invasion of privacy. I’m not really comfortable with the idea of someone seeing through my building while I’m having sex or through my clothing when I cross the border.
Invasion of privacy and a HEALTH ISSUE! They are exposing people to radiation with out their consent!!
To ex-ray a vehicel is different then going to and airport and getting a body scan. I been through vehical scans in a Tractor Trailer crossing from the worthless counrty of Canada into the US. No big deal. The airport scanners are totally different they can make out every line and detail. Its a mazind you can now buy pasties to put over your private area’s and you boobies both female and male which I think is cool
usually i like to respect that thin gray line that lies between justince and the pursuit there of and the invasion of privacy but this is just down right wrong we wont discuss heath risk of mass radiation releases on the unexpecting public and jump straight to the ilimination of a warant the removal of the necesity of probable cause and idea that we even had the illusion of idipendant freedoms is just blow away somewhere creedy is prepping his finger men while someone molds there guy fox mask
That honestly doesn’t even seem to be safe. I’d rather not be xrayed, kthnx.
Also…huge invasion of privacy. I can see maybe using on a car they suspect of carrying drugs but…come on. It’s ridiculous. It’s like there’s no place you can be really alone…
I feel like this is just one step closer to “1984″ You know…Big brother is always EFFING watching.
