  • Friends don’t let jackasses drink and drive.

Roger Ebert has stepped into some controversy after Jackass start Ryan Dunn was killed in an accident.

(He looks sort of odd after losing his chin).

Photos were posted of Dunn drinking right before he was killed in the accident.

So Roger Ebert posted on twitter ““Friends don’t let jackasses drink and drive.”  This caused friends of Dunn to get upset.

Roger Ebert responded, “I also regret that my tweet about the event was considered cruel.  It was not intended as cruel. It was intended as true.”  Here is the link:   Link

    Was the tweet insensitive?

  • burnnnnnnnnnnnn. he reminds me of a ventriloquists’s dummy

  • When I first read it, I was sort of offended for Ryan Dunn’s family and friends. Then I remembered he gave the movie “Jackass 2″ ‘Two Thumbs Up,’ something he rarely gives out. I think his post on Twitter was sincere and a general opinion.

  • Not at all. IF alcohol was actually the cause of the crash (not just the 110mph)

I can have A drink and be fine, I’m sure Dunn could have one too. We won’t know for sure until the autopsy comes back

But, if he was intoxicated and driving, I’d have a lot less sympathy for him.

  • not really. Btw I like Jackass movies. I’ll be missing him for the next movie production :’(

  • Nope, I think what Ebert said was worth saying. This isn’t just a random tragedy – this was the result of dangerous, stupid behavior. Based on what we know (and of course, the available information could change – and on his blog, Ebert was careful to acknowledge that), Dunn acted recklessly and dangerously, and that recklessness resulted in both his death and the death of a friend. If others had been on the road when he lost control, it could have been much worse. I don’t see anything wrong with calling attention to that.

  • I feel bad that I giggled.

  • The pun was rather horrible, considering many people seemed to love Dunn.  I had a couple of friends who ignored us and drove drunk anyway,

They both died.  Had any of us been insistent and stayed with them, we’d have insisted a designated driver do the honors.  The guys had to leave us behind, go to another party and render themselves incoherent.
The blame could be shared, but not in such a distracting manner, no matter how “true” it may seem.

  • I’m not a fan of this guyI think it was horrible to say that. It’s tactless in general to shit talk someone who isnt around to defend themselves but why assume he was drunk? If he was, it’s unfortunate but if he wasnt, Ebert’s gonna have alot of apologizing to do when the toxicology report comes back.

All in all, I think it was rude to say that.

  • I don’t see how it’s insensitive. It’s just true. Drinking and driving is a good recipe for death. It’s better that people know this.

  • Nah, what I wrote on the lovelyish post was clearly more controversial. Did you know i’m a sociopath, fucked up, a heartless bitch, and a twat? And apparently my brother is stupid and a terrible doctor too.

  • I read that he wanted his picture posted because of how he looks, to show that people do get sick and go on. I think he’s brave. The tweet, I’d say it’s premature. If the allegations of drunk driving turn out to be true, then I’d say he’s right. But if they aren’t, then he added pain to an already awful situation for no good reason. I’m glad he apologized.

  • aww he looks kinda like a creepy pedo dolly. I want one.

  • Everything is insensitive lately.

  • He obviously drank as he had posted pictures on Twitter doing so moments before his death. Drinking and speeding are not a good combo. I don’t feel sorry for him. A drunk driver killed my 5 month old cousin so I don’t feel sorry for any jackass who decides to drink and drive. I never saw any of his movies. I never cared to. If he had died alone is one thing but he took another life with him and he could have taken more lives had anyone else been on that road. If you don’t know the Philly area, it can get quite busy at anytime. I am just glad no one else was involved in the accident.

    @chaospet - Well said! I agree.

  • I see it more as the truth then poking fun at someone’s death. I even kind of agree with him.

  • No, it’s true. I’m sorry, but it is.

  • It’s a little morbid but fuckin true. He obviously wanted to raise awareness of drinking and driving—therefore obviously was not ‘happy’ about that death.

  • @ShimmerBodyCream - you can borrow mine if you want

  • Well……it’s true. Sometimes, it takes a little tough love.

  • If I were in mourning, I’m sure I wouldn’t appreciate it.  However, the truth of the matter is that if he was indeed being reckless (either due to speed, alcohol or both), then this is absolutely a true statement.  I am so sick & tired of people knowing that driving under the influence KILLS people, often times people other than the offender/inebriated.  This is inexcusable.  So should it be the case that it was Ryan Dunn’s fault, then no this was not insensitive.

  • The owner of the dead cat floating in the water in China they landed on in the movie was offended.  Did the Jackass crowd say I’m sorry to them?

I am not comparing a cats life to human life, just comparing what one finds funny others finds offense.  opinions are OK, being a jackass is not

  • Will we see that stunt in the next Jackass movie? Inquiring minds want to know.

  • I feel that even though it’s the truth, it really came at a bad time. His friends are grieving and not in the mood to hear anything as insensitive as that. He was my favorite. He will be missed by all :/ poor guy and guy that was in the car w him.

  • I think it’s very insensitive, especially to Dunn’s family and friends. I was so upset when the news broke about Dunn. He was pretty mellow compared to the other Jackass stars and I never thought he’d be the one to die from “reckless” behavior. I love the crew in general though and I feel for the other Jackass guys. Sure, they may do stupid shit but that doesn’t mean they don’t care about each other.

  • I think it was rude, because of the way he said it. I mean…if he had put something more…informative, and less douche like… I mean… he referenced this guy specifically, and that’s just messed up. Drinking and driving is fucking stupid, yes, but now is not the time. If he put something about how dangerous drinking and driving is, and given a message of sympathy toward the family, that might be different.

  • I think it was insensitive. I feel bad for Dunn’s friends who saw that tweet. When I was in high school, one of my friends committed suicide and there was one girl who posted something on facebook that read something very close to “Why should I feel sad? She killed herself so she’s a f***ing moron who doesn’t deserve my sympathy.” That felt like someone had run me through with a burning hot spear, so I understand why his friends go very upset.

  • I think he was right on the money. I would have said worse. You can tell I have no sympathy over drunk drivers.

  • What was that song from the first Jackass movie?  If You’re Gonna be Dumb, You Gotta be Tough

  • Drinking and driving is cool! Ryan, you died a hero my good dude.

  • It’s true. It can’t be that bad when it should be an obvious fact.

  • I think this accident was very fitting to Dunn considering he was on the show Jackass where they are constantly doing reckless things. Regardless of whether or not he was drunk, this event is sad. However, Ebert had the balls to not sugarcoat this situation and he doesn’t owe it to Dunn to say “oh, that wasn’t a completely dumb thing he did that got him killed” simply due to the fact that he’s dead, because the fact of the matter is, Dunn did something stupid and he had to pay the price for it.

  • Dunn wasn’t drunk. Yes, he was drinking. But who hasn’t had a beer or a glass of wine and then drove home? Hmm? So yes, what he said was incredibly inconsiderate and fucking disgusting right after the death. The cause of death was most likely because they were driving very fast and had to make an full on stop because an animal or something came on the road.

  • I was indifferent to the news

  • He’s a critic. He’s allowed to be as insensitive as he wants to be.

However, I don’t think it was that insensitive. It’s harsh, but true.

  • And even if he wasn’t drunk…. he was driving 130 miles an hour! Maybe anyone who’s that stupid, deserves what they get!

  • No, it was a good way to use a tragedy for some good.  Sad that people still drink after driving somewhere.  That’s where the real issue is… if you are the sole driver don’t drink if you need to drive yourself home.

  • If it came from anyone else I wouldn’t care, but roger ebert is the biggest piece of shit in existence. seriously, fuck that guy.

  • i don’t think so.  yes, it can hurt.  but it was the truth.  and everyone needs to remember it.

  • i don’t think so.  yes, it can hurt.  but it was the truth.  and everyone needs to remember it.

  • Insensitive maybe but true.

  • A bit insensitive considering Dunn’s family and friends, though not the stupidest thing Ebert has said lately.

  • I get his point, and I agree, but for those close to Dunn, it would be a very difficult thing to hear….he needed to recognize that..

  • I live in a cave. I am almost finished with my pokemon tournament. It’s good for statistics practice. Rapidash was always in the top ten and I’ve done quiet the amount of tourneys. Now, after four rounds she only got one in a half points; then there is Gyarados, always making it to the top. Also, for the first time ever, my Hippo is not having a good tournament. I have fun doing this. It goes to show our genes determine success. I don’t intend to spread my genes, and I have to live the rest of my life knowing that I am in the low class gene-pool. Like a frog with a missing toe. It doesn’t bother me, but unfortunately, only the strong will survive. Overall, I think civilization will not be able to sustain over population, and depletion of resources. Civilization is like a car and we are heading for a crash.

  • The truth is always insensitive to those who don’t want to hear it.

  • I think it was a little harsh, but true.

  • Honestly, I don’t know the guy, but my first thought when one of the people of the “jackass” series died, I thought that it would be doing something friggin’ stupid and that because of their lifestyle, they just sort of had it coming.

If he drank and drove and died subsequently, that is a jackass thing to do and well, like Steve Irwin, I think it was something just waiting to catch up to him.  It should heed people to lead their lives with more caution.  You only get one life.

  • It’s adding salt to an already really, hurting wound. Tsk.

  • my husband thought it was completely insensitive. I don’t find it as insensitive; I actually think Ryan Dunn was the kind of person who would find that funny. But I can see how this would be insensitive to his family, who are already hurt and mourning…

  • While the statement is true, the manner and the timing of the tweet are the problems to me.  So yes, I do think it’s a bit insensitive.  If he was drunk and that’s the reason for the crash, then he is responsible for his own death and probably will be (maybe even should be) used as an example to teach people why NOT to drink and drive.  That being said, he is still a human being with family, friends, and acquaintances who are grieving over his death and don’t need to hear these types of comments before the funeral has even happened.

  • I don’t think that it is as bad as a Tweet as everyone is taking it. I just think it was timed wrong since it was so suddenly after his death, but it is true. He could have maybe worded it a little differently, though.

  • Everything is insensitive lately.

  • I do agree that friends should never let friends drink and drive!

  • I heard there was video showing this guy knocking back some drinks before the crash. Are the people behind the fuss saying that it was ok not to stop him from driving after the video showed him drinking? Whoever took that vid had a hand in his death IMO. Learn the lesson, don’t let people drive drunk. If you do, they could actually die.

  • No. He was right. Don’t let your friends drink and drive!

  • And he was stupid for going 130mph. His crash was all his fault. I love Dunn but I feel more sympathy for the passenger

  • @boricua_chic_2008 -  I dont feel sorry for drunk drivers either… I’ve never had anyone I know personally who died from drinking and driving, but people who do that risk so many peoples lives i DONT feel sorry when they get hurt for their studitety (sp?).. And even if someone says “Im fine to drive”… Well, if you were just drinking, you obviously aren’t……..

@AMIGOS_WE_THREE - ?!?!?Dead Kitty?? When was this?…. I’ve only seen one of the movies….

It IS true though.. Friends dont let friends drink and drive.. Why couldnt they get a cab or something instead?…
And why doesnt anyone ever mention his friend in the passanger side?.. He died too….

  • I think he’s right to say so.

It’s fortunate Dunn didn’t kill anyone other people on the road (outside of his passenger) if he was actually driving drunk. I can’t stand people who think driving while intoxicated is a justified action. It’s not. Get a freaking taxi. It makes it even more dangerous for those of us who drive responsibly. Vehicles are already dangerous enough without adding alcohol.
I’m sorry Dunn had to find that out the hard way, and I’m sorry his family his family has to suffer because of it.

  • @bbanmen420 - Exactly, I totally agree!

  • Perhaps it could be considered insensitive but it was honest and needed to be said

  • I don’t think it was insensitive at all.  If anything, it was a witty play on words – after all, he starred in Jackass and was considered one of the “jackasses” from the show.  What Ebert said was not only true, it was honest.  Friends and family will undoubtedly view it a certain way and they are within their right to do so.  I liked Ryan Dunn a lot and thoroughly enjoyed his performances in Jackass.  It’s too bad he died, but if he was drinking prior… *shrugs*  What else can be said?

  • Driving around 130 mph is idiotic to begin with.  His friends reported he had 3 beers and 3 shots, I bet he was drunk.  Even if he wasn’t drunk, he was driving 130 mph!  No consideration for anyone else who might be on the road at the same time, no consideration for his friend who also died.  And as someone who lost their only sibling when a drunk driver drove 86 mph into the back of my brother’s car while he was stopped at a red light, I take offense NOT to Roger Ebert’s comment but to Ryan Dunn’s actions.  And when my brother was killed and my family and I went from shock to grief the last thing we were doing was looking up comments to the news stories on the Internet.

  • If you’re expecting Roger Ebert to say anything relevant about anything other than movies, you’ll be sorely disappointed.

By the way, what the hell is up with your petty comment about Ebert? We’re not little kids here. What, is it okay for women to get breast cancer (since every year you ask Xangans to send in pictures of their tits to get donations for breast cancer research), but not okay for anyone to get any sort of health problem that leaves the result immediately apparent? You’re two-faced and childish.

  • Friends usually don’t let friends do the stupid shit they do on Jackass either, so I’m not too surprised.  Now he’s a dead Jackass.  Just glad he didn’t take a family with him.

  • Yes he was insensitive -but- it is true. And when people make a mistake like this, it isn’t the time to coddle them. It’s the time to lay it out for them so they know to change.

What should you say to the friends? “It’s not your fault. It was his own choice. Dont worry about it” ::pat head::
-.- be sensitive? what a joke. someone just died and theyre concerned about THEIR feelings?

  • Unfortunately, I loathe drunk drivers, having to deal with one in the family that not only hurt a pregnant woman in one of his many adventures, but been let down by his friend, not to let him drive. It’s true. This death could of been easily avoided.

  • Truly cruel. No matter what you may think is the truth that needs to be heard, why would you post something like that where EVERYONE could see it. It just wasn’t a cool thing to say in that moment. Of course people know it, but it just wasn’t the right time like the DAY it happened. If I were a close friend, I would not have appreciated that either.

  • I want to say yes, it was, but considering how deadly drunk driving is, I lean toward saying it wasn’t.

Drunk driving is criminal, not something somebody does by accident, a plague on society, and the quickest way for somebody to kill a random stranger without a gun.

  • First Off: I think all twits suck. The entire concept, to me, is retarded. And… he’s entitled to say what he wants. The only thing I feel was insensitive was apologizing. For free speech.

The penalty for that, of course, if to have your chin removed. Penalty collected… no harm, no foul.

Oh, and R.I.P. – Ryan Dunn. (I’m a fan of Jackass).

  • A car going at that speed has the potential to annihilate almost any vehicle that crosses it’s path. Would you sensitive folk feel the same way if the jackass killed a family of 6 in a Minivan coming back from some vacation trip? He was a danger to everyone on that road that night, and he got what was coming to him.

  • I think all you people that said, the tweet was something that had to be said( in a public forum) are fucking disgusting.Give his family, and friends some time to grieve. And one of you clowns already mentioned that it is dangerous to drive even sober, I guess we should be less sensitive to all people that die driving. We should also be insensitive to all people doing dangerous things Guy walking around in a bad neighborhood at night time , gets shot up, ahh fuck him he deserves no pity should of called a cab, owned a gun or bullet proof vest. Oh what, someone died in a plane crash, shouldn’t have been flying a multi-ton hunk of metal anyway.

  • @MyTwoCentss - I agree completely. couldn’t of said it better.

  • I thought the same thing when the news reported his alcohol level was twice the legal limit… I was like, no one thought to try and stop him from driving? But what can we do? I lost a sister to a car accident where no alcohol was involved and I know his family is in pain, esp. since his death is so public. I don’t think he meant it to be cruel but it will still hurt the family because it’s true. His life could have been saved and that’s the hard truth. I really feel for his family.

  • Something can be both insensitive and true.  In this case it is both.

  • anyone can clearly see from the tweeted pic that he already had a couple of drinks prior to taking that pic.  his friends beside him are all flushed and definitely under the influence.  any police officer would have pulled them over for a sobriety check.  as the ads on tv say… buzzed driving is still drunk driving.  here are some facts so far.  police estimate his speed at about 130 mph (in a 55 mph zone) and he flew (yes, flew) 40 yards into a forested area (hitting a few trees) before coming to a rest and catching fire.  police also now know his BAL at .196, almost 2.5 times above the legal limit.  so he was not only buzzed, he was just plain drunk.  roger ebert just stated the obvious.  even though his death is sad, i feel more sad for his passenger who only wanted a ride home.  i think some article said he was going to go to another party after dropping his friend at home (though i am not sure how true that is or i misread it).

i just keep wondering what would have happened if he came upon a family in a minivan heading home on the same road at the same time….

  • In this case, no, I don’t think it was an insult. The man was on a show called “Jackass.” Thus, he was a jackass. Ebert was just stating a fact. If the man (or his friends) didn’t want to be called a Jackass, maybe he shouldn’t have been on the show. Duh.

  • I think Roger Ebert hit the nail on the head.

  • @SKANLYN - What a waste of a Porsche 911 GT3.

  • Nah. It’s OK. Bigger question: Is it insensitive to ask what happened to Ebert’s face?

  • I honestly think it was too soon. Bam Margera had all the right to be offended.

  • Insensitive or not….causing this much attention could be the only ‘good’ to come out of this situation.  Death, anyones death is tragic.  If it could have been avoided it is even more horriffic.  My condolences to the family.

  • Insensitive or not, I don’t see it as that big a deal.  Dunn died, and got his passenger killed, because of stupid, reckless behavior.  It is only by sheer luck that they didn’t kill others.

  • I think he was just making a pun about the show, but I really would be offended if I were mourning at the time. You just need to be careful what to say at the time of a tragic death because you never know who it will offend. It is supposed to be a solemn time.
