  • Should This Kitten Live or Die?

I am in another kitten dilemma.  The neighbor found a new kitten in their garage.

The dad said he was allergic to kittens.  So my son brought him home.

If we send him to the humane society, he will probably be put to death if he is not adopted.  If I just put him back outside, he might die.

My kids want to adopt him but he will one day become a cat.

Should I take the kitten to the humane society?

  • Kitten dilemmas are some of the better dilemmas to have.

    Keepitkeepitkeepit!

  • Keep him, Dan. Keep him!

  • You could give him to me.  I’d take care of it.

  • “My kids want to adopt him but he will one day become a cat.”

Well if your kid will one day become a cat, I’m sure he’ll have a buddy to relate to! KEEP IT

  • Get it spayed or neutered and let it be an outside cat.

  • Oh man…and a BLACK cat at that! My wife would not let a cat in her house,so I don’t have to worry about your dilemma

  • And what’s wrong with a cat?

  • Only good cat is a dead cat, sir.

  • The Humane Society is a no kill shelter. A cute little kitten will probably get adopted while it’s still small, and your son might eventually forgive you.

  • CUTE!! I’d take it in a heartbeat.. my little one would have someone to play with! How could you knowingly send a little cute fluff ball to his death? :(

  • cats are cool too…you should keep it!

  • He should not be letf outside without an owner, any  cat for that matter. If you adopt him he could be neutered and free to roam at will outside if there is enough nature around. He is now your responsibility. Yes if you dont keep him, he  should be taken to the humane society. A cat is not too much trouble and can play a positive role in a family.

  • First, you really need to understand how humane societies and shelters work. They don’t just kill animals for no good reason. And kittens are a HUGE deal at shelters because kittens are the first to be adopted, along with puppies. Also, some shelters don’t euthanize pets once they are up for adoption – they stay up for adoption until they find their forever home. You can also choose a limited admission shelter for cats and hope they have room. If you can’t find a decent home for your kitten, I would take it to a shelter. We are good people and we only want to help animals (we wouldn’t be in the business if we did).

  • Keep it or put it in the paper for free. Please don’t kill it or let it be killed. And don’t craigslist it because people look for kittens on there to use for some kind of bait. Please put it in the paper for free or keep it. Or send to a no kill shelter. It’s a cutie!

  • Pros: Cats are cool. They’re low-maintenance. They kill rats. They’re not too expensive to maintain.

Cons: Spraying (Typically stopped by spaying/neutering.) Shedding (brush and diet can tackle that.)

    Benefits: A new friend.

  • Either keep him or keep him for awhile until you find somebody that will take it. Kittens are really easy to adopt out. Just make sure it gets a good home. It is REALLY NOT HARD TO GET A KITTEN ADOPTED.

  • I’d say keep it. It’s a black cat — if you give it to the humane society, it’s chances of getting adopted out are pretty much zero from what I understand. You’ll save its life if you keep it!

  • Keep it or find a no-kill shelter.

  • Hmmm…Johnny Carson comes to mind when I read this post. Yeah that’s how I roll.

  • Keep him and if you don’t want him in a few days give it to someone who needs a barn cat.  Then at least he can be happy.  I adopted a cat from the Petsmart adoption place knowing full well that he would become a cat and he is an awesome little fuzzy beast.  I’m definitely glad I got him.

  • Keep the kitty, take cute pics and use for internet famewhoring.

  • It’s just a cat.  Feed it for 26 dollars a month and consider it your good will to the world.  Make it an outdoor cat.  Then you won’t have to do much.

  • I found a kitten once and we found a home for it by posting flyers at my husband’s job.  You could do that or take it to a no-kill shelter  Kittens always find homes

  • I would keep him!

  • If you don’t keep it, give it to someone who can care for it.

  • From the Houston Humane Society web site:

The Houston Humane Society will take in all animals.  Animals are screened before going up for adoption based upon age, health and temperament.  There is no time limit on adoptable animals.  All unadoptable animals are humanely euthanized.  There is a minimum fee of $20 for every animal that is dropped off.

Fee will be used to partially cover costs to: process paperwork, provide clean cages, examine the animal and  give necessary medications.

Fee does NOT guarantee animal will be put up for adoption.

The admissions department is open during the hours listed below.

Mon – Tues     11:00 AM to 4:00 PM
    Wednesday      CLOSED
Thurs – Sun     11:00 AM to 4:00 PM

  • Keep him! I can see how some people may be superstitious (still, in this day and age) which may lower his chances of being adopted…but you don’t seem like the superstitious type, Dan.  Plus, you did tell your son that you loved him the other day, didn’t you?  What better way to really show it than with a cuddly kitten for everyone to grow to love?! =)

  • We take kittens to the livestock auction. They move like hotcakes. I once saw 18 kittens go in five minutes. Farmers. They love ‘em.

  • if you don’t wanna keep it send it to a no kill shelter

  • I prefer cats over kittens. Because they’re not as hyper (mellow and sleep 16 hours a day), low maintenance, and they are fantastic pest control.

Neuter that fella at the right age (6-8 months) and it’s smooth sailing from there.

  • @QuantumStorm - such an observant person you are….

  • You should give him to your wife as a birthday present! Then you take care of two problems.

  • Well, if you’re really against keeping it, put an ad in the newspaper or post fliers for a free kitten. That’s how I got my kitten when I was 9.

  • Keep the kitten! He’s so cute and adorable and cute.

  • keep it or take it to the a no killing centre.

Take it to the police,   someone might be looking for a lost kitten.

  • Aww, keep the poor thing! We found my cat Bella along the side of the road and she was only 5 weeks old. Because I handled her so much as a kitten she grew up to be very affectionate and sweet, she follows me around everywhere and when I return home from school she’s always right at the door to greet me! Not all cats are uncaring balls of fur.

  • Aww. I’d totally take it. ):

  • You don’t have to take it to the Humane Society. Put a free kitten ad on Craigslist.

  • Cats are just as cute as kittens. Even better actually, because they are bigger, cuddlier, don’t poop in your house and know how to tuck in their claws so you don’t look as if you cut yourself after playing with them.
    Keep him.

  • Aww. *swoon* I have a soft spot for black cats. Since I already have one, the apartment complex would never catch on, right? “No…I don’t have another cat…it was just a glitch in the Matrix…” I do believe that one trip up  to the office in a black trench coat, skin-tight black pants and sunglasses would be enough to convince them that they didn’t want to pursue it any further… Send him here! <3

  • I once took in a stray in.  She turned out to be pregnant.  I advertised and gave away two of her kittens keeping one since recently my only cat had died.  The human shelter? If the kitten has not wormed himself into your heart then do what you have to do.  But try giving him away privately first.  A vet may know some options… The humane society would be my last resort.

  • If you do turn it in the chances are better for a kitten then an older cat does to get adopted.

  • Get rid of it and get a dog lol

  • Keep the little dude.  Cats are awesome!

  • Lol well it would easily get adopted, if it were older I’d be worried about its chances. But I say keep it, anyway. =]

  • Most shelters around the country are *immediately* euthanizing any animals who are surrendered. Just thought I’d let you know.
I’d take it, but it’s probably too expensive to ship a cat.

  • That must be a trick question.

  • NO!!! WTF?! ask around have some care to see if someone wants to take it. it’s a helpless kitten and you need to ask to keep it alive or dead!?!!? come on now. have some heart……..

  • awww noo :( keep him! or send him to me :( aw he’s so adorable! NEVER KILL A KITTEN!

  • take him to a new age bookstore or your local candle/incense shop. the owner will be happy and the store will have a cute black cat to wander around and charm the customers.

  • Aww keep it! It’s too cute!

  • Dan, as a theologian you know what it says in the scriptures; “Every time thou doest masturbate, God killeth a kitten.” You’ve probably killed lots of kittens in your life. This one shouldn’t get special treatment.

  • humane society is totally out of the question.

    you should adopt it.

    this is redicolous, KEEP IT.

  • I thought you were pro-life. So, “Should this kitten live or die?” is…

Why am I expecting sense and consistency from you? Nevermind.

@ColdSkivvies - I nominate thee for best comment.

  • I say keep the kitten outside. Get him a box to sleep in.  Feed the cat and it will live there forever.  You can love a kitten outside just as much as inside and just wash after handling it.  Problem solved!

  • If you don’t want to keep it, I bet it’d be fine at the Humane Society. If it’s anything like the ones I’m familiar with, even the kill shelters will NEVER euthanize an animal just because it’s taking too long to get adopted. They only euthanize animals who are very sick and have practically no chance of recovering, or animals who are aggressive and would pose a threat to their potential adopters. Besides, everybody likes kittens! I worked at a humane society in Minnesota, the largest animal shelter in the state, and I don’t think I ever saw a kitten on the adoption floor for more than two or three days before it got adopted.

Oh, I should also add that no-kill shelters aren’t always as great as everybody thinks they are. They almost always adhere to the same standards as kill shelters when it comes to deciding which animals are suitable for adoption. If they get an animal that can’t be adopted, they’ll usually ship it to a different shelter. Those animals will bounce around hopelessly throughout different shelters until they finally end up at a kill shelter and are euthanized. If you want to be absolutely sure that the kitten won’t be put down, try finding a rescue organization that places cats in foster homes.

  • If your son wants to keep it, keep it.  My son once found a stray kitty, very young, on our back porch, and adopting it, nursing it to health, taking care of it was the best thing for him at that time in his life.  The kitty was so little it curled up in his baseball glove.  Celeste turned out to be a great friend to Ben…these things happen for a reason!  Make your son responsibly, of course, but support him in his effort to do so.

  • AWWWWW KEEP IT!!!!! It’s so cute!!!!!!

  • I can’t tell you what to do. I would probably look for another home for it, before taking it to the humane society. You could make it a cared for outdoor cat, by providing food, water and a comfortable shelter.  I would also take it to the vet to have it neutered though and treat it regularly for fleas and ticks with advantex or a generic equal.

  • Uh…. What about a no kill shelter?….. There are such things as those….

  • Having pets around children is good for them, it teaches them certain responsibilities that they will one day put to use in their adult lives.  You should keep the kitty, not all felines are bad!

  • keep the kitty!!

  • I vote that you def. keep him… Humane Society’s can be cold and lonley and it’s best to get cats when their young, anyway… Potty training should be easy and you can watch them grow. Also, then you can write more posts on what to name it, how it’s doing, etc. Use it as Xanga material! :) Best of luck – let us know what you’re going to do!!

  • no-kill shelters aren’t hard to find.  if all else fails, i’ll come get him :)

  • erm…I think it is time for you to have a cat…they are loving…don’t make messes cept around their boxes…have it fixed and keep it…they are also good at helping to destress ya and to heal ya…smile

  • It will probably be adopted. It is a young cat it looks like and everyone always wants young animals.

Personally I am not a kitten/ cat person so I would give it to a shelter.

  • Keep it for a few weeks and see how you like the little cutie. I am a huge cat lover, but my mum won’t let me keep any. I would love to have the opportunity that you and your family have right now. So…. KEEP IT >.<

  • Get it fixed at a low cost animal clinic… sometimes they’ll do it for free. If no one is willing to adopt it, you can always let it be an outside cat chilling in the backyard.

  • Pets are amazing.  I’ve always had a couple of cats and/or dogs around and I couldn’t imagine not having one.  Many have suggested keeping it as an outside cat which is fine if you don’t live around busy roads.  There are many places that take in strays and set them up for a good home.  My last cat was from a place like that and she’s a sweetheart.

I’d ask yourself this.  What would you do if it was a human baby instead of a baby cat?  Does the little thing deserve any less?  I think not.

  • Keep him, or find a home for him.

The humane society only waits for two days before they kill an animal… not a big block of time for someone to come in and buy/adopt him/her.

Yes, it will be a cat, but there are benefits to having cats. If you raise them well, they can be friendly partners. They hunt mice and bugs when they come into the house. They alert you sometimes when things are wrong, and they are super warm in the winter. ^_^

  • Google “No kill animal shelters.” They’re around.

  • Dan, keep him!! or say on facebook you have a kitten looking for a home!!

when it comes to kittens, the answer is always LIVE!

  • Either keep it, find it another home, give it to an animal rescue organization, or give it to the humane society. All of those are responsible options.

  • Murder that kitteh and feast upon its flesh!!! :P

  • Watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rskFaiDIEwA

I know you’ll want him now!! Don’t send him away :( :( He just wants a home!!

  • What? A kitten that cute should have no problem being adopted from the humane society.

  • Why would you send him to his death? Black cats are less likely to be adopted…sad but true.

  • Let the kitten LIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • no… cats are useful when it comes to keeping the rodent population under control and it sounds like your children might enjoy having it around.

  • Adopt the Cat. It will make your kids happy and give you piece of mind! I found a kitten much the same way you did, and I ended up keeping him against all odds. He now if my best friend. I feel he was almost sent to me because it was the year after I lost my father! REMEMBER everything happens for a reason!

  • If you can commit to providing for the cat, then get him neutered and keep him. If you cannot commit, then try to find him a home or a non-kill shelter.

  • Hey, Dan, here in houston they have “Friends for Life” No Kill- Animal Shelter. They cater to cats, I volunteered with them for a long time in the heights http://nokill1.org/

  • If you don’t keep it or find it a better home (not incl. a shelter), consider yourself a murderer.

  • Dan if you really don’t want it, tell me the area you live in and I’ll find for you a no-kill rescue.  Please don’t take it to the humane society.

  • It’s so cute, just send him to me and I’ll hide it in my dorm. Although I doubt it’ll be put to sleep at the shelter since it’s a kitten and will probably be adopted quickly.

  • ask your friends if they like cats and see if anyone wants to adopt :)

  • The vast majority of Humane Societies put down a large percentage of the animals they take in. There are far too many coming in to adopt out, especially with microchipping, shots and all.

Ours locally euthanizes 80%. They charge a small fee to drop of an unwanted pet, and $75 and up to adopt one out, after you go through an interview and background check to ensure you are “fit and able” to own a pet…one reason for their low adoption rate..

Best thing you and any of your friends can do is neuter/spay your pets to reduce unwanted litters. I live in the country, and even the strays that wander in, I have neutered/spayed, shots, get them healthy and let them on their way. Some stick around, some don’t.

Kittens are a perfect pet for a child. Give them a litter box they’ll potty train themselves, get them neuter/spayed at 6-8 months and you’ll minimize spraying/heat issues. The pest reduction and companionship are worth the small amount of time and effort they take. Dry kibble is not that expensive.

If you truly don’t want it, posters or Craigslist, or locate a reputable no-kill shelter in your area.

And to insinuate you’d “kill it” is simply trolling for comments. Cheap shot, Dan.

  • bring him to the humane society, with a condition that if they don’t find anyone to adopt the kitten by the dateline, they would contact you.  you can then decide to adopt the kitten yourself or find someone else who might be willing to do the adoption.

  • Shop for your best <a href="http://weddingdressesz.webs.com/">2012 wedding dresses at noviamor.co.uk. Their <a href="http://weddingdressesz.webs.com/">plus size bridal dresses and <a href="http://weddingdressesz.webs.com/">uk beach wedding dresses are so popular.

  • Put up “Free Kitten” signs.  Somebody will want it.

  • Awwww!!! He is soooo cute!!! I want him!!!

“If we send him to the humane society, he will probably be put to death if he is not adopted.”
There are no-kill shelters, you’d just have to look in the phone book / google your nearest shelters and call & ask if they’re a no-kill shelter or not. Shelter’s will take good care of your kitty. They’ll treat him for fleas, worms, give him his vaccinations, neuter him, etc. And since he’s still a kitten, he’ll probably find a home quick.

“If I just put him back outside, he might die.”
Unless someone else takes him in and takes care of him, chances are he will die as small as he is.

“My kids want to adopt him but he will one day become a cat.”
That’s okay! Little kittens and big cats are both great!

  • Keep him I gave him an awesome name!
