  • Why Women on Xanga are Getting Fatter

Women on xanga are getting fatter.

It is because they are doing less cleaning, cooking and laundry.  In fact, women used to spend 25.7 hours a week doing house work.  But that was back in 1965.  Now they are spending more time watching TV, playing around on the Internet and talking on the phone.
Women on xanga today spend only 13.3 hours a week cleaning, cooking and laundry.
A recent study showed this is causing women to be fatter.
If you think about it, a woman has a washing machine, dishwasher and microwave.   If you take the 13.3 hours a week rule, you can see the average xangan woman can “work” in the home for an hour in the morning.  Make the kids a few sandwiches at lunch and throw something in the microwave before her husband gets home.
They get to spend the rest of the day on the Internet.  Here is the link:  Link
Do you think modern technology is making women on xanga fat?

  • YES.  I’ve been sitting on my ass all day!

  • Ahhhh, dan, dan, dan….

  • Did you know that 95% of the statistics on the internet are just made up on the spot?

  • We don’t have a dishwasher or clothes dryer in this house. I honestly have no idea how to use either appliance. We’re still a bit old-school and I prefer it that way.

  • Hmmm that doesn’t explain why men are getting fatter though does it?

In all seriousness I think it’s the fat, I mean FAST, food

  • Woohooo now I can blame it on technology and do not have to take any responsibility for what I eat, or for how much I do not exercise.  Ty Dan you gave me a new excuse for being overweight<:)

  • I can definitely see how this is a likely reason why women aren’t as slender as they once were.

I like having a job that requires me to be on my feet and moving. I have a job like that now as a library page.

I hope that if/when I can be a stay-at-home-mom, we’ll have enough land to have a vegetable and herb garden, farm animals, fruit trees–I want to be able to work outside and prepare food that we’ve grown and make meals from scratch. That’ll be a lot of extra work, but it should be evened out by all our other modern amenities.

  • no.  the fat woman is making the fat woman fat.  tv doesn’t put the twinkie in my face.  i’ll get up for a bag chips.  hell, i’d walk to the store for ice cream, but get up to put the clothes in the dryer, or to turn on/unload the dishwasher.. pfft.

  • When I heard this on the news tonight I thought this is something that will show up on Dan’s blog!

  • I’m not getting any fatter >_> …

I have gotten more FAT in the last 10 years, but I’m not getting fatter.

It just doesn’t want to come off.

  • I blame the increasing deliciousness of food. I mean, they make tacos now with Dorito shells! And they’re not even a dollar! How could we possibly resist?

  • I’m sitting this one out, mate.

  • This is stupid. I wish I could play around on the internet and only “work” 13 hours a week by cleaning and making food… Two jobs, five classes, extracurricular activities… and yet I gained some weight since being in college. So MAYBE, just maybe, women are getting fat because they’re working too hard. I like my logic better than yours.

  • It’s not just women. Lots of men are fat these days too, due to an increasingly sedentary lifestyle involving desk jobs and watching too many sports on television.

Come on, Dan, we already know you are a chauvinist. You don’t have to go out of your way to prove it anymore. ;)

  • Xanga doesn’t make one fat. Fat makes one fat.

  • We have a former regular on Datingish named Shimmers, who is an expert on being “fat” because she can’t pull her chair away from the buffet table.

  • I’ll have to google that and get back to you.

  • @Donkey_Guy_10 - No, I’m pretty sure it’s 97.4%.

  • My wife is not getting fat even though I am her househusband slave. I do lots of the housework, but she stays in great shape.  She eats healthy and does lots of work herself–plenty, plus brisks walks 2 miles a day 5 times a week.

I think all Americans are struggling with weight.

  • As a humanist who’s principals dictate that facts, science and evidence trump feelings, belief and emotion….sadly cannot argue the findings. I don’t agree with Limbaugh very often and it is tough to admit but he might just be right for once with his Femi-fatty rants and how feminism is one of the chief causes for obesity in women.

Humbling day when you must admit Rush Limbaugh is right and you were wrong.

  • Sedentation is an equal opportunity life shortener.  I find it best to get out and get moving, which is possible just about anywhere- even in LA, Houston and Atlanta.

  • It’s definitely made them lazier. Women have it too easy if you ask me. My grandmother used to talk about how in Ireland, back in the day, pregnant women would give birth during their lunch break then be back working in the fields as soon as their allotted twenty minutes was up.

  • Just when I thought the posts couldn’t get any more ignorant, they just did. Wow.

  • Modern technology only does what people make it do. Inactivity paired with bad eating habits is what makes people fat.

  • They didn’t have high fructose corn syrup replacing sugar in all their foods or the strain of wheat used in almost all wheat products in America that grows bigger, but makes people more likely to be gluten intolerant (gluten intolerant means you can’t eat wheat without gaining weight). You have to remember they were usually housewives whereas women now work 40 hours a week, sometimes in offices where they sit at a desk most of the day.

  • Well crap. Just when I was starting to feel good about losing almost 20 lbs. GEEZ!

I clean my house like a boss, & I cook dinner everyday, so I guess this doesn’t apply to me. =)

  • But most of them didn’t have full time jobs back then. 25 hours of housework a week isn’t nearly as
exhaustive as 13 hours of housework + 40 hours working a full time job,
especially jobs where you are on your feet all day like a cashier or a
    waitress.

But obviously this is just a tongue-in-cheek post to get a rise out of people, so it doesn’t really matter.

  • As others have already stated (because it’s obvious) women are fatter because everyone is fatter, men too. Women are now in the work force more than ever, and yes technology and spending all day on the computer is in part to blame for weight gain. Women, like men, are gaining weight in sedentary jobs in front of computers. They are also eating more and less healthy because they are stressed about being expected to work and also complete ‘housewife’ duties at home.

  • Am I supposed to take this post seriously? I never know.

  • Definitely making me fatter I spend time on the net or watching tv when I should be exercising haha or cleaning …..i hate cleaning though..

  • “Women on xanga today spend only 13.3 hours a week cleaning, cooking and laundry” and men spend how much time?

  • Getting up and making me a sammich = 13 calories.

    Doing a jumping jack = .3 calories
    Math is hard.

  • wow, i thinks that about sums it up

  • Women on xanga today spend only 13.3 hours a week cleaning, cooking and laundry.

I’m lucky if I spend 13min a week cleaning. IT’S LIKE YOU DON’T KNOW US AT ALL

  • true very true

  • this one should get you a lot of traffic!

  • The men here are fatter too.

  • Lmao! Well, not necessarily Xanga, but I believe the internet in general is. And yea, I definitely spend all day online sometimes. It’s not really good. But every time I say to myself, “Ok, time to get off the internet and go for a walk”, there’s this voice inside of me that whines, “Nooooo, it’s coooold…”

  • I don’t understand why you go out of your way to phrase things in an inflammatory manner. When I first started reading your blog you’d post edgy conversation starters but now you’re just being a dick. There are nearly a dozen other ways to phrase your title but no, you opted for the most derogatory way possible. You’re too smart for this.

  • @steph843 - Walk into a Wal-Mart, stand by the door and count the next 10 people that come in.  Categorize (yes, it’s cruel and judgemental, but that’s what research is all about) into Thin, Normal, Heavy, and Obese.   You’ll find that almost 50% fit into the O category, 25% fit into the H column, and the remaining 25% fit into T or N.   We are a society in serious trouble.

Interestingly, the same research of an upscale store shows exactly the opposite.   So while socio-economics clearly play a role, most Americans are less well off than they were a 5 years ago, the problem will magnify as the recession lingers.

  • LOL @ the idea that I spend as much as 13.3 hours a week doing housework!

  • Xanga is filled with a bunch of ED girls. But go ahead and continue putting your bullshit on the Internet.

  • @steph843 - Agreed, fast food for sure, but we don’t normally eat fast food.  I guess ours is “slow” food.  lol

  • Dan, Dan, Dan, where do you come up with this stuff?  Are you sitting around at home researching these odd things?  I currently work 40 hours a week, as does my GF, of course she isn’t on Xanga, but I wonder where this research came from since you did mention the ladies on Xanga.  Ok, just saw the article and no where in it does it mention Xanga.  Your title is misleading Dan.  *SHOCKER*.  Perhaps a study by yourself on this site would be more suited to a title of that sort.

I’m sure you could make up a survey and ask the women of Xanga to complete it if they are so inclined.  I mean you of all people would be the best to do this since you get thousands of views in a single post.  I’d be lucky to get a thousand views in a hundred posts.  I’d complete your survey and I think it would be interesting to see what comes of it.

  • I’ve met a few Xangan chicks and I wouldn’t call them fat, per se. I mean most of them have had some pretty large asses, but other than that, they’re normal.

  • No idea.  Some people on Xanga think they are fat when they aren’t.  (And your title won’t help.)  Seems to me that the study focuses more on post-college women.  I’d think Xanga ages average much lower than that.

These issues should be addressed by qualified medical personnel, not just random people on the internet.

  • Where do you get this stuff?

  • no, we are just eatting more calories then we are burning.

my older sister said,”my dr. said I’m obese;at least he didn’t say I was fat.” my sister thinks that’s good! lol

  • Oh, Dan, Dan, Dan.

How far we have fallen from grace.
    xD

  • Funny enough, quite logically correct, but the same applies to men, we were not as fat when we had to farm, hunt and physically labor to keep our families alive.

  • It depends if your sitting at the computer eating a bag of chips or not.

  • Women who have had kids need to do a certain exercise (that mimics scubbing the floor) to prevent getting a falling uterus.

25.7 hours divided by 7 means doing an average of three hours a day worth of chores. Going to the toilet is sort of a chore but toilet cleaning averages 15 minutes a week. Vacuuming is not as vigorous as jogging so maybe instead of vacuuming women should go out and jog or go to an exercise group for an hour each day?

Cooking can be linked to getting fat. I hope your wife is cooking to make you fat.

  • oh, Dan! LOL :)

  • Shopping Is really a Hobby Regarding Woman
Shopping is no stranger heard nowadays, especially for the women. That is the method of choosing and also looking regarding further items purchased for your wants from the buyer. Almost every woman is very fond of that, superior goods for example clothing accessories, cosmetics, food, and also other entertainment media such as magazines and books. It could already be called a culture of women. No day without having shortness of lots of people today shop with every market, malls, big stores, small retail stores for example shops, printing shops, and additional. The method could be divided into two with face to face against the seller of your direct sales, we go to the shop like mall, so we can choose the goods directly and also freely and also always be capable to bargain to have a cheaper price tag. The on the net shop that’s simply by going to a shopping site, and then select the item and order so that the goods will always be delivered and payment transactions created when the goods have been received, so there is no bargaining course of action. So naturally these people gained advantages and also disadvantages of each and every in the shop.
The course of action of buying and also selling might be accomplished inside a variety, also as store, which is a shopping center which stores various kinds of merchandise. Every which has the characteristics of every single, ie, goods sold at a various commodity items, for example a clothing stores, food stores, cosmetic stores, bookstores, shops selling daily necessities and additional. As regarding on line stores which are now circulating on the net internet site, also as ‘Toko Bagus’ and also ‘Zalora’, and also other individuals which we are able to locate on the internet.
At this stage within the shop or choosing items, we should take into account lots of issues like brand items which we’ll get, since the brand determines the quality with the goods to ensure that we receive an idea of how long the item will last. Subsequent may be the type of stuff that choose precisely what suits their hearts and comfort us. Then the price tag of a product, in this case too we’re needed to offer you prices which we obtain a cheaper price tag along with the best price. But there is no bargaining process within the on the net stores. Intelligent purchase is a purchase with sufficient knowledge, ie, we need to find out the superior quality of a product having a good brand as well, and also we need to learn the price of goods normally so we are not easily fooled. For individuals who love to shop would have had loads of knowledge about buying and selling, then that is definitely a habit regarding everyone, in particular woman.

  • @shezadey - Agreed.

Women now spend less time on housework on average because (1) more and more women have been able to get involved in the work force since 1965 (and therefore do not have the TIME to devote 25 hours a week to housework) and (2) technology makes housework easier. It does not make women lazy, and it does not inherently make women fatter.
The fact that this is even a point of discussion exposes misogyny, ignorance, and body-policing in our culture – women are still expected to dedicate this amount of time to housework, because it is still perceived as “our place”. We are expected conform to this image of a slender housewife.
I’m fat for many reasons. Spending time watching TV instead of devoting 25 hours out of my week to housework is not one of them… (because I don’t watch TV.)

  • Let me guess – a man did this study? Women aren’t getting fatter, people in general are getting fatter. Times are changing, we can’t be stuck in 1965 forever just because a man wants his damn sandwich, but who’s to say we went from doing housework to sitting on our asses? In 1965 women were housewives, today we have careers. I’m sorry this upsets so many of you.

  • Why is this limited to a) women b) women on xanga and c) in relation to just our duties as a home-owner and family gal?

People in general are most definitely getting fatter due to endless means of distracting oneself, people take advantage of that. Technology can be a very useful tool to actually learn how to reduce the amount of time one spends cleaning at a time, on top of the fact that general house duties are often shared with the man of the house mostly because, imo, he doesn’t want to be viewed as a sexist prick.

The way I see it, your perspective is extremely outdated, it could use a little dusting.

  • an hour in the morning huh? bullshit.

Sure I play on my phone between tantrums. I have a cup of coffee as I read your short blog.I make time to go to the gym and shower.
But gosh dang… who in the world only has to spend an hour cleaning with 2 toddlers?
My mom was lazy and rarely cleaned ever. our house was filthy. she was lazy before the internet.
I CLEAN. I COOK 2-3 FULL meals a day for my family. My husband comes home to a lunch that was baked, cooked on the stove or prepared to some extent at least 15-20 minutes… and that does NOT include clean up. Likewise I make his breakfast at 7am before he goes to work. Eggs and oatmeal – on the stove. We rarely eat out, and we rarely order in. This momma may spend and hour or two, or even 5 of interrupted internet time. I do a LOT of reading and writing on the computer and I don’t need to prove that I don’t veg out in front of the TV to anyone. When they come in my home it is obvious I spend time IN MY HOME, but also working at making it a home.

  • (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻

  • Xanga isn’t making me fat. The never ending river of pasta flowing into my mouth in making me fat

  • You’re a riot. The average housewife is like a mythological unicorn. Why would I do all that housework when I work six days a week on my feet and then play taxi in my off-time? I haven’t had a vacation or time off since I started this job. Lack of sleep, poor diet, and inactivity are reasons for gaining weight. And the dudes are getting chunky too. Just sayin’…

  • It could be that the vacuum cleaners are smaller nowadays…and…

  • LOL
I’m getting fatter because I’m PREGNANT.

  • Yeah a couple of people have said it, bit this doesn’t explain why I am getting fatter.

  • You must be trying to see how many people you can piss off in one fell swoop with this entry.  But anyways, I basically agree.

  • @Midnight_Masochist - Everyone is getting fat.  Back when I was a kid fat was not the average for any age bracket.  Now it is the average for just about every age bracket.

  • @tendollar4ways - So, what’s Rush’s excuse?

  • Because men don’t get fat, ever.

  • Maybe the question we should be asking here is why are all the household chores relegated to women? And then the study saying that WOMEN are getting fatter because they aren’t doing the household stuff anymore would be a moot point.

  • @HUMOR_ME_NOW -

I think all Americans are struggling with weight.

Bingo! Why are women being singled out? Men are fatter too.

The problem is multifaceted, and some of it’s not really a problem.

    a) People on average in the US and Europe and Japan are fatter. Sure. But the average age is also *OLDER*, and no matter what, weight tends to increase with age. Comparing US obesity rates today to those of 1960 isn’t a valid comparison, because in the midst of the baby boom we had a lot of skinny younger people back then. You have to age-normalize the data. When you do so over the past 10 years at least, the trendline is a lot flatter.

    b) The other factors often cited as causes–processed high-calorie fast food, lack of exercise, etc.–is actually all symptomatic of a single cause. And that’s this:

AMERICANS DON”T HAVE ENOUGH PAID TIME OFF WORK.

You see, what’s killing us is not us being underworked, but overworked. American’s lack of paid vacation time compared to the rest of the world plus the fact that we work longer hours than almost anyone else means that we a) don’t get enough free time for exercise; b) don’t get the free time we used to have for family dinners, c) are sleep-deprived (which contributes to fatness) and d) are always rushing here and there to run errands in our SUVs because we have to get ‘em done before we return to work. The proof in the pudding is that the working poor with the least resources and who are the most overworked and have the least accessibility to good food and exercise are the fattest.

And don’t give me the crap about “exercising by work”–that’s not sustainable. Get your exercise in only by doing work, and you end up with overuse injuries. You have to not only strengthen the muscles you use in your work, but also the ones you don’t use. Plus most people’s jobs don’t burn nearly enough calories compared to exercises like running or bicycling per hour.

Back in the not-so-halcyon 1950s and the single-wage earner family mode, which was made possible because the government pursued policies to promote wages rather than depress them, we had at least one family member who had free time. Because of that, the other family member was relieved of doing chores. And at least we had family meals that were probably more nutritious.

Did you know that 95% of the statistics on the internet are just made up on the spot?

SNORT!! I almost lost my coffee! :P

    -netnguy

  • LOL, Dan..
You are simply hilarious and wrong at the same time…
    most of the time.

  • very interesting post.. i gained weight since I started working night shift at the call center..

  • I wonder if there was an article that explained why MEN are getting fatter. I think the subtext would read something like, “With woman working more now than they did in the 1960′s, men have more time to sit on their ass and not do shit.” I work, I take care of my daughter, and still take care of my household. There is a hot meal on my table every night and my house is spotless. If I choose sit around and watch tv, I think I deserve it.

  • @netnguy - Wow!!! Your reply should be a must read blog.

  • I blame automobiles. I walk a lot, like to and from places running errands, in the hot sun and cold wind, and people look at me like I’m crazy and try to offer me a ride. But, they’re the ones travelling a short distance in a seated, air-conditioned vehicle. And I’m the one who’s crazy.

  • A combination of less activity and more unhealthy foods is the cause. Not the hours of housework she does.

  • wait wait wait..

“Women on xanga are getting fatter.”how do you know that?
