  • Xanga, Bea Arthur Topless and EX Ratings

An artist painted a photo of Bea Arthur of the Golden Girls topless and it sold for $2 million at an auction.  (Special thanks to tendollar4ways for keeping us abreast of the situation).

I was reading an article from the The Daily Beast and they said Facebook shut them down for posting the painting.  Here is the link:  Link
This is disappointing because art is constantly being censored on social networks.  I am pretty sure I would have received an “ex” rating if I had posted the actual photo uncensored.
It shows we have lost our appreciation for art.
    Should we rate art “ex”?

  • Art is art, and the human body is a magnificent work of art… even if it’s a naked Bea Arther… (shudders) ugh…

  • I always liked the Golden Globes better than the Oscars.

  • I think the Facebook TOS says that to be considered art, you have to be under 30 years old when you were painted in the nude, and you have to be dead for at least 100 years. Oh, and you have to be perky; no saggy breastfeeding Mom boobs. And moobs are never art. I think that one’s a law.

  • Per the link:

“[Facebook has] been really great about handling it very quickly,” a staffer at another website affected by the Bea Ban told The Daily Beast, adding that “moderation is a pain in the ass.”

By 2:00 p.m, after several emails and a phone call, The Daily Beast was back in business. And there on our page, just where we’d left it on Tuesday, was a photo of Bea Arthur’s breasts.”

The situation is over and done. There is your answer.

  • Aw yeah! Love dem Maude titties!

  • @saintvi -  I have a picture for you, “saggy breastfeeding Mom boobs.” I beg to differ. And I nursed 2 babies, for 2 and a half years total.

    P.S. Not saggy. Perky.

  • The only art that deserves an EX is bad art.

  • people need to appreciate art.  stupid assholes.

  • For some crazy reason I find her attractive. Oedipal complex??? NO. I am just sick and tired of porn and real world people are more attractive I think.

  • Bea from the Golden Girls..? Oh my..

  • thats ridiculous – facebook allows videos of beheadings, but not this?

  • I just gave you an ex rating :P

  • I don’t understand why people are considered idiots for not wanting to see naked people. It’s a matter of taste, though I don’t think it needs to be censored unless it represents people being seen naked against their will.

  • I know out here, even on artist groups on facebook, people can’t show there modeling art work, or even paints because people will report them on facebook, and they’ll get taken down. It’s bad, and really sad.

  • I remembered who Bea Arthur was while the page was loading and then instantly regretted clicking it.

  • I think if it had actually been a painting of a nude model who volunteered to model, it would be different. Considering it’s a made up nude painting of a celebrity… it just comes across as a little weird. So if it was ART in the traditional sense of the word, I would be upset about it being censored, but this just strikes me as creepy. And I can’t believe someone was stupid enough to pay $2 million for that!

  • She definitely earned the “gold.”

  • @PrincessPowers - hehehe, I don’t doubt that!!!

  • Art is art, so be it.

  • Because this was needed to be contributed to the world of Art… Lol

  • Unless there’s bodily fluids and penetration involved, I say no. Nudity is harmless. The first day of any Figure Drawing class, you’re going to see a nude model. It’s art. You’re going to see it in museums. It all depends on what those nude figures are doing. Sex obviously requires an adults only warning label.

Frank Cho, one of my favorite artist, was banned from Facebook recently for his drawings. I’ve been debating on whether or not I should post my cheesecake art because there’s trolls and uptight people who would love to shut me down. Maybe social networks aren’t ready for it. Best to have your own site where you control the content.

There’s naked people on the internet. Sometimes people paint them. Get over it.

  • Pornographers call what they do “art”. Lots of things pass for “art” that are in reality nothing but garbage (ie this painting). $2 million huh? What a deal.

  • It’s only a matter of time until they do same thing with Betty White.

  • No because there is a difference between art and porn.

  • A fellow was once quoted as saying, that there is indeed a difference between art and porn. He said he could recognize art when he saw it but porn, he had to take home for himself with a box of tissues and hand lotion to be certain of it’s categorization.

This image may describe the dilemma of definitions. [Image]

Me personally ? God bless Hentai !

  • Bea had some nice Ds.

  • it is not easy to say what is art and what is not..but to rate art “ex” would be a misunderstanding if not a sacrilege…

  • uptil I saw the draft which had said $6481, I didnt believe that…my… cousin trully bringing home money in there spare time at their computer.. there uncles cousin has been doing this less than 13 months and recently cleard the loans on their appartment and purchased themselves a Peugeot 205 GTi. we looked here, http://www.rev24.com

Ahh, the opposite of a Supreme Court justice, I see. :)

  • Art is a form of self expression, from how we feel to what we find beautiful. And yes, sometimes art is erotic or pretty damn close to it. I hate censorship. But I do understand the need for it sometimes. I mean, there are some things we don’t want to show our kids. But then again, maybe if we introduced our children to art with naked women, they wouldn’t be stashing Playboys under their beds. They’d appreciate the female form, not treat it the way the media is treating it now, like something dirty. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

Or maybe I’m looking into this way too much.

  • I have so many pieces of nude art that I don’t consider pornographic, but that I know that if I were to show anyone else, they’d be scandalized. I think social networks try to cater to the lowest common denominator, and damn the rest. Oh, sorry, I meant darn the rest.
