Communion
I was reading an article written by Robin Pomeroy. In the article she quoted Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo (The head of the Pontifical Council for the Family). He has been critical of countries that allow abortion.
In the article, Trujillo is quoted as saying he felt that scientists who experiment on embryonic stem cells should be viewed as abortionists and be “barred by the Church from taking Communion.”
He went on to say, “Destroying an embryo equals abortion and that excommunication goes for the woman, the doctors and the scientists who eliminate the embryo.”
Should scientist who experiment on embryonic stem cells be barred by the Church from taking Communion?

Well, the Catholic church has their doctrine. Anyone who does not follow it can be asked by the leaders of the church not to participate in the sacraments. I think they have the right to do that. Privately if you have not been asked to stop taking the sacraments I think you have to follow your own conscience.

well, if the scientist don’t like the fact that cathlics won’t serve them communion, they can just go down the road to the local Methodist, or Pentacostal church, their open churches, meaning someone doesn’t have to be a member of the church.

If the individual feels that their spiritual walk is not what it should be, then they should not take communion. BUT only the individual can make that choice. Christianity lies in the heart…not the administration.

That’s ridiculous. Stem cells–embryonic cells– are matter, just like any other embryonic cell which doesn’t come to fruition in a fully functional, conscious human being. They can’t think, talk, hold a sick child or anything of the sort. They have just as little of a chance to come into being as a person as one of a million sperm cells (which during conception die by the droves, although the Catholic church doesn’t seem to mind that).
However, they do have proven and well documented medical uses and could vastly improve the quality and length of life as a person.
The fact that the Church thinks that it is right in trying to strong arm a healing field of study is beyond my comprehension. The Church holds sway, if you’re a member of their community, over the domain of the mind and soul–not of the corporeal domain, because that is fleeting–the only thing that we’re not allowed to the corpus is to kill, and a cell with a tiny possibility of being a person, does NOT count as killing a person and should not be included in the legerdemain of the Church.

I don’t think anyone should be barred from Communion. Perhaps what a sinner, no matter how bad the sin, NEEDS Christ within them to turn their lives around. Gays, murderers, women/doctors who carry out abortions, I don’t care. No one should be denied the Eucharist if they desire to have it. But that’s just me.

I think that it is the individual’s decision. If they feel that God is not holding them accountable, then they should be able to take Communion. If they feel conviction, then they shouldn’t.

And in response to your post… I am pro-life, but I also think no one should be barred from taking communion, even in that case. Just because someone is doing something that may be wrong, it doesn’t mean they can’t have a relationship with God. After all, aren’t we all sinners? I would wonder about their level of commitment if they are involved in something like that, but it is really not for us to judge another’s faith. Besides, communion is only an outward sign of something inward anyway, and only God can judge the heart.
If someone denys Holy Communion to a person, then they in turn should be denied of it, because Jesus fed everyone but himself. I have this strange feeling that if Jesus were to invite 12 people to suffer, there wouldn’t be a cardinal, pope or any other religious figure among the group.

I think the Church has a right and a responsibility to define itself. Part of the process of definition is to have doctrine which should be upheld with in the confines of the organisation. A strong stance with consequences for those who do not abide is perfectly within the Churches per-view. This is very important for the Church because if they do not set themselves apart they become obsolete. There function is not political correctness or to host a big I’m ok your ok party, there function is the Great Commission and all of the difficult messages that entails. I do not, however think it is wise to jeopardise the salvation of the living in defence of the possible (embryos).
I wonder what they think about invetrofertilisation…there are often embryos left over…

In regards to communion, I believe that is a personal thing between you and God. Communion is a means of grace, from God to us. We are to approach it and seek it after prayerful meditation. If the embryonic stem cell researcher can approach communion with a clear conscience or not is between him and God. Perhaps he/she needs communion more than the rest of us. Who are we to judge?

i don’t believe in excommmunication. the extent of guilt or innocence of a person’s soul is only discernable by God. Jesus reminded us of that fact when he asked why you would be concerned about the speck of dust in someone else’s eye when you have a big ol’ log in your own.
the giving and receiving of communion is a sacrament of reconciliation. it is not to be withheld upon the whim of a priest/monseignor/cardinal whose will has been thwarted. besides, who is to say that the reconciling act of communion would not alter the “sinner’s” heart? who is to say that the receiving of that wafer, of that blessing, would not bring peace and light and salvation to that person, regardless of the state in which (s)he partook?
by refusing to administer the sacrament to someone, you run the risk of driving them away from the church instead of bringing them to repentence and back into the fold…. (unless the Roman church is more interested in punishment than penitence…)

I have no problem with stem cell research as long as the woman had a miscarriage – then it would be like being a doner. I am pro-choice and my choice is life, BUT I understand other womens situations could warrant abortion. I know a girl who was brutally raped at thirteen and became pregnant. If she were my child I would encourage abortion and she did have one. I would not feel bad about that fetus, even though it was innocent, being used in stem cell research – at least this way its life had some purpose.
Couple things: I’m not sure how I feel about the Communion question. I’m torn between my feeling that the Church should take a stand for what is right and my feeling that a person’s relationship with God is their business.

Our church (which is protestant) reserves the Lord’s Supper for those who have asked Jesus into their hearts. It means nothing to people who don’t believe in Christ, and it should be reserved as a reflection time.

Yes. It is a clear way to make a statement that what those people stand for is not supported by the Roman Catholic Church. Communion is supposed to reflect a commonality of belief and if you disagree with the Roman Catholic Church’s teaching on life issues you disagree with the core of the faith. Someone who is identified with a cause like an embryonic stem cell researcher, abortion clinic worker or death penalty advocate should be banned from receiving communion.

Some scientists who work in certain sectors can’t do anything about their situation short of quitting, but that isn’t going to pay $50,000 dollars worth of college debts. If they accept this, then the next thing you’ll hear is that every teacher who teaches evolution theory would also be banned. I would suggest for them to find a new church. Jesus would never reject any of his believers, as it is written, “everything works for the good of those who believe in Him.” Why the church would is beyond me.

If you belong to a private club and do not obey their rules and regulations, they have a right to ask you to leave. The same is true for a church. Church membership is open to anyone how wants to join the “club,” but there are teachings and traditions that must be respected by the membership. If members can not do that, then perhaps thay should find another church, one more in tune with their beliefs.

No. Inclusion in the church is based upon faith in christ, not belief in and adherence to any and all doctrines. If stem cell research is considered a sin of such magnitude that it negates your faith in Christ, then what good is your faith. If disagreeing on that doctrine excommunicates you, then why not lying, stealing, adultry, not honoring your parents or remembering the sabath. It is a human opinion not a divine one and very discriminatory.

My feelings have always been alittle away from my church in regards to the whole stem cell thing, keeping in mind the fact that they are experimenting to save lives and the cells they use are already not going to be children, I see no point in letting them just go to waste. In additon to this I think that while some people do very bad things they should not be so judged upon by the Church for them to say that they may not partake in communion. To me this is almost against the teachings of Jesus, judging those people like that, when they do not have the right to. Only God has the right to judge.

I think excommunication is taking it a bit far. But I happen to be a Republican, Conservitave Christian, so I certainly do not agree with abortion. In fact, I am strongly against it… and the doctors, woman, and scientists are certainly all to blame. I am assuming they are not Christian, because if they are, they are going against the word of God. However, I am not saying that it is impossible, everybody makes their own rules of their beliefs - which I believe is selfish. They should be punished, or at least not rewarded, because you aren’t half in half out. Any out is all out. The problem is, everyone should have an equal chance to redeem themselves…so therefore I believe they are wrong, should be punished, but just not with excommunication.
