  • Youtube

Youtube has been in the news today because of “How To” guides of certain illegal activity.

Apparently Fox News did a basic search and found videos showing instructions for “breaking into that house, stealing the car, driving off without paying for gas, and even scamming a Big Mac.” (Apparently still no instructions on how to email in a post without yahoo advertisement showing up).

Youtube has an explanation to this report:  “Please note that our community controls the content on the site and they’re the ones (not us) who flag content they deem inappropriate.”  Here is the link:  Link

Is there anything that youtube, xanga and myspace can do to really control the content that is posted on their sites?

  • I remember once that youtube had a video that had like, a video of explosive material or something and with chemicals, and they removed it because everyone was paranoid terrorists were going to do something with the info.

    I’ve never been first. awesome.

  • I don’t know.

  • yes and no. It depends on how much money they are willing to spend etc and so on. Don’t a lot of these sorts of sites rely upon the users reporting that sort of thing?

  • if we want our  mass media like china’s then yes. if not no.

  • They do, but it would be a waste of time. They can get all the bad content off, but not fast enough for the sites to ever be free of it.

There could be a huge, expensive department to approve EVERYTHING before posted. You know that would be a pain though. Approval of creating a myspace, or posting a video before people can just put up nasty, or just bad things. Ya know?

  • Too much to control and look over

  • no, not at all. there is a thing such as free speech too.

  • They could set up a sweatshop of underpaid workers that surfs YouTube looking at the new content.

  • i think most sites have a disclaimer saying that they do not control the content, so it’s not possible to point fingers when they say up front theres nothing they do about the content to begin with.

  • Hell no, and if they try, people will protest saying that they’re stifling artistic expression.

    No one;s ever happy!

    Why?

Even though I’m bitter as hell..

    Yay for hypocrites!

  • Yes, but it requires a large amount of privacy violation.

    /first page?

  • There seems to be no practical way to examine all the content.  Smaller sites can do that (my former high school examines all content before it is posted on the school website); big sites just don’t have the manpower necessary to do the job.

  • I’m sure they can. Technology can do just about anything nowadays.

  • lol, scamming folks out of a Big Mac.

Man, where are the morals in our society.

As for ideas, there really isn’t a sure way to control thousands of videos being posted weekly/daily. Filters would be great if they worked. But it almost takes human filters to truly dicipher right from wrong.

It’s a shame we even have to filter it in the first place.

  • FIRST PAGE AGAIN!

    Man, I’m on a roll

  • Not really, and they shouldn’t have to. People are going to do those stupid things anyway. It’s not Youtube’s fault. The whole point of Youtube is that people put up what they want without many restrictions.

Is the government controlling the internet now, too?

  • You know, I’ve seen episodes of Dateline and possibly other news networks where they have a supposedly “ex” burglar or “ex” con artist show how easy it is to break into a home or scam someone, and how they do it, in great detail (I assume the reasoning behind this is to prevent the vulnerability that people have to these situations). Technically that’s teaching someone the tricks of the trade, and is it not ultimately the same concept?

  • They should be banned, I tell you Banned………they are the root of all evil, forget Islamo Fascists, the spreaders of naughty information are the real enemy!

  • No.

    Too many sites.

I don’t like flagging.  Getting people afraid to post something/go to other people sites because might see visited them through footprints and come to their site and flag them or leave them a hate comment or whatever is definitely NOT the answer!

  • Haha, they wished… but it will never happen! You can ALWAYS find a way around anything.

  • Youtube

    Should be free to post

    There’s no need to boast

about the content it has up

But that’s no need to knock it down

This is America.  Free speech.  Anything else is kidding around..

  • They can do something. It doesnt sound like there trying very hard.

  • Is there anything they need to do?  Should they be?

  • I don’t think so, youtupe is huge it is nearly imposable to control everything on it.
Little Xanga can not ever keep porno from showing up on its featured content list. What chance does a giant like youtube got

  • YouTube has its own particularly weird agenda.

  • nope

  • even if they could, it would only be a matter of time before someone would find a way to get around the system

obviously yahoo doesn’t filter it’s advertisement hey dan

  • they COULD “approve” everything before it is posted. however (even if they hired a full staff) we would be waiting days or months for our posts to be actually viewed on the internet, therefore driving away their business.

  • It would be very hard to do without cutting into peoples/users rights

  • Probably not. I don’t really care.

  • they could check searches everyonce in a while, but basically no..

  • Probablly but then no one wants to join the community.

  • People will always find a loophole. No one realized just how powerful the internet would be until it started taking control.

  • Free speech is a wonderful thing – don’t ruin it.

  • I’m gonna go with…. no. not effectively anyway.

  • I don’t think it would change anything. The people who want to steal a car are going to, with or without utube.

  • no….

    so leave it!

  • Depends how big their site is.

  • Not much, no. I suppose they could do regular searches for illegal material, but that probably wouldn’t help all that much. The users need to take more responsibility in flagging this kind of stuff.

  • Your voice……..  It’s deeper than I thought.

    lol.

  • I was just thinking about winning the lottery. I thought about what might happen to me as a person. I was wondering if you could do a post off of the question “What do you think is scarier: poverty or wealth?”

I know many people might say they dont want to be poor, but if you think about it, wealth can be much more scary.

I am not a featured xanga, so it isnt positive to get opinions or answers to my questions. :-/

  • “no, not at all. there is such a thing as free speech too.”

bluntness: im laughing at that because you really cant say anything you want; sorry, but i get a little miffed every time i see a comment like that

anyway, yes, i believe that it is a clear cut and they can regulate some stuff on PUBLIC sites

  • My thory is if they’re willing to trial kids as adults, then we are all free to view whatever we damn well like.

    ’nuff said..

  • Sure. They can go to the government, and be like, “Hey you guys, howsabouta dictatorship?” And the government would be all, “Hey, cool, yeah, we’re close anyway!” and then burst into a raucous chorus of “Throw the Jew Down the Well”, like those hicks on the Borat soundtrack.

    :D

  • theres a little they can do, but they shouldnt get blamed for everything like the tend to be in the media

  • No, not really. They can’t really do much.

                                        -KrIsTiN-

  • i don’t think so

  • they didn’t control this post

  • No, just random checks on sites to scan for content…it’s really hard to regulate all of this.

  • No. Defer to inevitability!

  • no. Have you seen half the blog rings on xanga? I found one the other day for neo nazis. It would be impossible to police everything on xanga. Anyway, people often can hide behind “freedom of speech” as an excuse for stupidity.

  • Ultimately no, I don’t think so. But it would be nice. (if only because then I am absolved of need to do it myself)

  • SHOULD THEY?

Xanga has a terms of service. So does youtube?

Should they jump through hoops to keep content that drums up…

Oh god I don’t know. I’m about to quit my job. Reason?

    Terminal incompetence.

I wonder what will be new a week from now?

Homeless then jobless, but choice. Could I be one of those street nomads by New Years?

    Pure masochism.

    :P

  • I don’t think there is too much they can do. I mean, they can set filters and try and regulate it, but YouTube, Xanaga and all those other kinds of websites are so big and so open to the world, that I think it would be rather difficult to track down every single post that shouldn’t be up. I suppose they could try.

  • For some reason I couldn’t get to the link.  So – I don’t know.

  • Yes, hire enough people with all that money they are making to review the new content posted.  It would save me time having to filter through the porn.  When I’ve ever reported anything I had to badger them to death to get them to pay me any attention, but they finally took it off.  (myspace)

  • I think YouTube’s statement is fair.
Did someone say they saw rabbit’s in the spilt coffee? I see a bearded man with long hair!

  • They could take responsibility rather than shirking. They could attempt to control content rather than throwing their hands up and saying, oh well. I don’t really think they should, but that should be a stated position rather than trying to shift blame to the users.

  • The site should be held responsible for the material that is posted. So they need to hire admins to remove stuff like that.

  • Nope. There are just too many posts on those sites.

  • free spech anyone???

  • did anyone watch the law&order or csi or whatever it was that aired two nights ago, that dealt with a staged kidnapping aired over youtube?

  • doubleplus ungood crimespeak.

  • No. What’s the big deal? It isn’t (or shouldn’t be) such a problem.

  • Eh. Probably not unless they can find a team of people with nothing better to do than peruse constantly.

    I don’t know.

    Filters don’t always work, y’know?

    ~Victoria

  • Not much, I guess.

  • laws are always a bit behind technology. enjoy the freedom while you can people.

  • tag your it.

  • not without hiring a lot of drones to sit and pour over stuff…

program “spiders” would make mistakes and shut dwon sites with no problems…and then people would get sick of it and not visit the site

on the other hand, these videos teach people how to protect themselvs too in a reverse type of way…

  • Nope, not unless they take our free speech away. But come on though, how many criminals started their career because they saw a youtube on picking locks? Hey I should research that . . .

I have a friend who googled how to do something bad like one of those listed. (See? I’m being good and not saying what) He found it and actually did what the article said to see if it worked, but don’t worry, he didn’t actually steal anything.

People don’t need youtube to be criminals. Which is sad.

  • Google just bought youtube, I’m betting they’ll be taking down a lot of illegal content.

  • You would think so but who knows for sure.

  • Yes but it will cost them $ to do that (personnel and techs)

  •  > I don’t see how they could do very much about it other than block it and then there is the 1st amendment…. Damn!

    Peace

  • not really…just too many people and too may posts/items to look over….it would be impossible

  • When it comes to a site that big.. I don’t think so
