  • Amputee

A lady went into the hospital to have a baby.

The doctors had to perform surgery on her and she is now a multiple amputee.  She wants an explanation from the doctors of why she had all of her limbs amputated.  They are basically telling her that her only option to find out is to sue them.  Here is the link:  Link

  • oh that’s horrible!

  • Wow…. Yup, definitely a HUGE lawsuit coming for that one.

  • i hate myself for being the person who says first. :-p

  • Dang, missed first by about 5 seconds….. *sigh*

  • …wish her luch…doesn’t look like she has a leg to stand on…

  • Wow…
    This scares me…

  • WTFFFFFFFFF ARE YOU KIDDING?!?!?! that’s insane!

  • That’s horrible!  I can’t imagine.  She can never run her fingers through her little ones hair or touch that beautiful baby skin with her fingers…as most mothers love to gently tickle their little one’s face.  That is just tragic.  I hope she sues…and I don’t recommend that option lightly.

  • OMG. WOW. She should definitely sue the damned doctors!

  • oh my golly.
my husband is NOT allowed to leave my side when i give birth…

  • You can’t even pull the trigger to kill yourself.

  • That is so friggin’ unbelievable.

    I smell a cover-up going on in that hospital….

  • Why wouldn’t they just tell her, and lower their risk of getting sued? Thats really weird. They could just tell her, and she could accept it, and not sue them. Most likely, she won’t accept anything because we don’t do that these days. WE TAKE PEOPLE’S MONEY TO SOLVE OUR PROBLEMSS.

  • that’s insanity.  it’s an illustration of how our “rights” can actually hit us in the face later.

  • that is so bizarre.

  • wait. this was forever ago. like a year. what happeneD?

  • Wow … I don’t think that was necessary. I mean, I’m not a medical person or anything but gees…

  • ummm…dude…im even more traumatized of the doctor now….

  • That’s terrible. I mean, it is entirely possible that she got a particular streptococci that is a flesh-eating and causes TSS… however, it is SO wrong that the hospital won’t tell her any more than that. How does it violate a patient’s rights to tell them about their own health? Not telling them violates their rights IMO. Grrrrrr I hate HIPAA and all this crap… and it’s especially a pain when you’re working in a healthcare profession.

  • That is the craziest thing I’ve ever heard. . .Not only that they won’t tell her, but that they didn’t tell her or her husband BEFORE surgery.  What the crap?!?

  • I’m not sure I believe this story Dan… =P

  • This is weird beyond belief. What did happen?

  • she’s just now getting around to a lawsuit?? I woulda had papers started within weeks!

  • I’m sure they just had the wrong patient or something, and they are too ashamed to tell, because it is just going to get so much crap in the media, because thats what the media does.

  • Obviously they went strait from the operating room the their lawyers. She needs her own lawyers, they are scum but lawyers run the world.

  • that is so awful!  Why would they do that to someone?  She will never be able to hold her baby or touch him or her with her hands, and that is so terrible.

  • that’s ridiculous
i mean, if they had to do it to save her life, thats one thing

but they should at least tell her WHY it was necessary

She knows why she got her limbs cut off — she contracted an infection. What the hospital won’t tell her is how she got the infection.

  • oh my goodness, that’s horrible!  I mean I guess they did tell her about the streptococcus, but not how she got it?  Sheesh.  Then again, more people die from secondary infection from gram negative bacteria and  what not then what they were originally hospitalized for…you’d think they’d get some Lysol.

  • That’s unbelievable… i’m speechless.

  • i’m speechless. makes me rethink going to a hospital for anything.

  • WHAT?!!  That’s the craziest, scariest thing I’ve ever heard!!!

  • what the heck! thats inSANE!

  • that’s frickin ridiculous!  i’m gonna read the story now…

  • She’ll be rich.

  • Oddness..and unfair. I’d sue the hell out of them

  • that’s… bizarre

  • that is so sad…that poor woman

  • Wow.  That’s sad.

As for the hospital, perhaps they are hoping the ‘you’ll have to sue us’ / ‘the judge made us do it’ routine will help them avoid at least one lawsuit.

If people weren’t so sue-happy, she’d probably know by now what happened.

  • I’m not a fan of medical malpractice lawsuits, cause I think most of them are crap, but this one?  Yeah, BIG lawsuit.  BIG!

  • thats weird man, how could you go those 7 years without filing a lawsuit.

and also i dunno about you guys, but I’d be really pissed if i woke up with no arms or legs. That completely robs you of the ability to be independent!

  • I’d sue every freaking doctor in that freaking hospital. They can’t do crap like that.

  • i bet the doctors got patients mixed up and amputated her limbs for no reason.

  • I was first once. I answered the question and went on with my day. I was very pleased with myself. Another time the post requested NO comments. I gave no comment, nor eprops. Again, I was immensely pleased with myself.

    What was the question?

  • Wha…?! “I’m sorry ma’am, you caught a flesh-eating disease and we had to put you under the hacksaw. That’s all we can tell you.” I can understand the hospital’s stand if they have told her everything aside from the other patient’s name, but that didn’t seem to be the case from the article. OI!

  • wow. that is SO messed up. i would totally sue the hospital.

  • WHAT the hell.

  • thats so fucking sad.

  • that’s horrible! can doctor’s actually do that? i thought it was considered battery to do anything to a patient’s body without their consent, and if they are unable to give consent get it from their “next of kin”?  i hope this women gets gennnnnnnnnneroussss compensation…

  • Just kidding…

    :P

Now onto this. Has anyone ever read “Death of Common Sense: How Law is Suffocating America”?

You can get it for $5.99 from Amazon.com BRAND NEW. It might shed light on this issue. It was a toilet read as I visited family. Notice in the link the woman makes no reference of a damages lawsuit, but rather wants to know the sequence of events leading up to her being a quadraplegic. She is suing, at the hospital’s instruction, for the release of information.

Health insurance, litigation, laws laws laws. Did we have enough lawas in 1976? How about 1986? Ok, 1996, something still aint working, 10 years, 2006!

What do we need? New laws! Miners die in tragic accident, Anderon Cooper makes a sad mistake on his newsertainment show in CNN…

Bush passes new legislation to make mining safer.

This is NOT a lawsuit. It is a tragedy, and a shambles. I think we should be condensing laws, not passing new ones. How about that?

  • I can’t imagine what it would be like to think you’re just going in to deliver your baby and come out a quadruple amputee with no answers.

  • no question??? that sucks!! though………..

  • OMG. I am so upset about this!

  • My guess is that the lady caught streptococcal gangrene. This is a disease that is spread by direct contact, and can lead to death due to toxins. It’s possible that the doctors had to amputate her limbs to save her life. I agree that the doctors and hospital should have told her more, but doctors are obligated to save lives, and that means that immediate action must be taken at certain times. The woman’s loss is tragic, but the hospital may not be able to provide the lady with all the reasons for her contraction of the bacteria. Because it is spread through direct contact, the hospital isn’t allowed to tell whom she got the bacteria from due to doctor patient privlages. Her loss sucks, but unfortuently it happens.

  • WHAT?!?!?! thats crazy

  • Look, even if it WAS necessary, she still has a bloody right to know WHY! Geez. . .

  • very bizarre!

  • wtf…

    that is so horrible

    makes me want to cry.

those doctors are messed up… i think i just might want to know why my arms and legs got CHOPPED OFF when i went to have my baby…

    makes me sick

  • What the fuck??? That’s absurd

  • Not only does this completely disrupt motherhood, but I’m sure the romantic aspects of her life have really gone down hill. She’s so young, too…

  • that’s horrible

  • i’m willing to bet she got necrotizing fasciitis, a form of the bacteria that causes strept throat. it’s commonly caused the flesh eating bacteria. i’m willing to bet the hospital fucked up and gave it to her in surgery, and so they won’t tell her. assholes.

  • oh man, that’s horrible

  • That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard! (On the hospitals part)

  • thats definetly alittle jacked up! gotta feel bad for her

  • OMG, what’s with the plane crash vid??

  • Wow. That doesn’t make much sense at all.

  • It seems as if she caught streptococcus from another patient because they are saying that “if they release that to her, that would be a violation of other patients’ rights.”  So if it involves another patient, then perhaps she caught it from another patient.  Or maybe there was a mixup.

What a horrible thing to happen.

  • Pardon my language, but what the fuck?

“‘Yeah, I want to pick him up. He wants me to pick him up. I can’t. I want to, but I can’t,’ she said. ‘Woke up from surgery and I had no arms and no legs. No one told me anything. My arms and legs were just gone.’”

  • thats freaky

  • How horrible…..

  • that’s fucked up to say the least.  Legally, I can see the hospital’s point of view, but it still doesn’t make it right for the other person.  Hospitals can’t release information on other patients.  They can’t tell you if somebody else on the ward had a streptococcus infection.  However, it is obvious that somebody else did.  I would sue as hospital acquired staph and strep infections are easily prevented with good aspetic practices by hospital staff.  I wouldn’t let a doctor or nurse touch me w/o seeing them watch their hands before putting on gloves.

  • that is just insane..unbelivable…

    hospitals make me sick…

when my son was born, he was born with pneumonia…they accidentally gave him 2 adult doses of genomyosin before they realized what had happened…told me about it, told me it cause liver and hearing damage later in his life, but they would never admit to doing it to anyone other then me and it was never on his record…so in other words, *oh we almost killed your son, but too bad, you can’t do anything aobut it”….i should have seen a lawyer about it…(that was almost 11 years ago)

  • …..

     what?

  • Oh My God.  I would die if that happened to me.  I go in for what should be a joyous occasion and come home with no arms and legs.

And the hospital.  Can they say in any other terms that they are responsible for her infection.  I find that when they close ranks…someone screwed up really bad.  The least they could do is hand over her medical records.  If they fail to document something in them they can have their medical license revoked.

As to the hospital…they should be investigated.

I hope the story if followed up on.

  • This is  terrible.I can’t imagine the changes she had to make in her life to deal with the loss.

  • I had to go read the story b/cit seemed something had to be amiss. I can’t believe this. It seems cruel for the hospital to outright tell her she’ll have to sue them to find out why her limbs were all cut off. That’s just not right.

  • thats F^K;d ^

  • Those bastards! That is so awful.

  • Outrageous! No explanation without a lawsuit? There shouldn’t be a shortage of lawyers willing to take THAT case! But there can be no compensation for the mom that’s worth all four limbs.

Did you ever see the movie “Boxing Helena”? I wonder if the Doctors did. Oh, sick!

  • Woah. I had to stop myself from flinging a long list of profanities.

  • HeLovesMe32: That’s exactly what I thought…this story smells fishy.

  • Whoooooa…. they won’t tell her??? Damn! That’s freakin’ lame!!!!

  • HOLY CRAP THAT IS THE SADDEST THING I HAVE EVER READ. That poor woman…. I respect her faithful husband though. That was sweet.

    I still can’t believe it…

  • That’s absolutely awful and it makes me sick to think about it.

  • WTF.
I use that phrase sparingly, for situations like this.
She should have sued LONG before now.  Coming out of pregnancy with no arms or legs is not normal.

  • WTH?!?!?!?! how the hell would without the conesnt of the patient and how is it that she didnt fiel this sooner..

WOW that’s pretty messed up! i wish that would never happen to anyone.. poor kid and poor mom~

  • Never heard such a bizarre story!  Awful!

  • OH my God that is sooo effing wrong

You know jokingly in my Birth Plan for my first daughter, we put in “Try to avoid amputation of left leg” I never thought it would actually happen to someone

  • i bet it was that classified disease; and she got it.

the one that makes your arms and legs turn green and developes maggots and all kindof gross stuff.

kindof like a leamer or leaper?

    its rather gross.

  • My mind is blown on this one.  I think I feel physically sick.  If it was up to me, the hospital would no longer be in business and EVERYONE who participated in any decision or care of this woman would be sued.  I know we are not suppose to sue, but we are talking about FOUR limbs!?  Someone had to tell someone something…right?! Grief!

  • I have a feeling that one of the nurses or doctors or otherwise hospital staff gave this streptococcus to her and that is why they aren’t releasing any information. They’ve got more guns in the holsters than she does so she’s going to have to pay to make them to draw.

  • WHaaaat? that is craziness!!

  • Whoever performed that surgery without getting consent from the patient ought to end up in jail, unless they have a really good excuse the hospital isn’t releasing.

  • –A side note: That is the most poorly written article I have ever read in my entire life. What are these reports in Florida being taught? Egad!

  • thats absurd, that poor woman!! freaking hospital nonsense

  • I see no possible way that being told how you got streptococcus would violate other patients rights. The most amazing thing to me though is that the hospital and doctors are actually telling her to sue. The hospital is violating the state’s constitution with their refusal to tell which seems to be like the hospital wants to have their liscense revoked so that they cannot even operate anymore.

  • “It would violate the privacy of other patients”
Well WHAT THE FUCK did they steal her limbs and give them to other patients? That’s the only shit I can think of … seriously, the hospital should be SHUT DOWN , no matter what it ends up being…

  • WHAT. THE. FUCK. that’s…lame.

  • damn. i remember hearing about that.

  • holy crap. That’s messed up. Have the not heard of informed consent there? *shakes head* that’s just not right.

  • wtf man

  • that’s terrible and makes no sense. how does her arms & legs affect another patients condition? that poor woman, i hope she does sue them for tens of millions. it won’t get her limbs back, however it will prevent them from ever doing such a thing again.

  • That’s absolutely horrible. How could anyone do that?! I bet they just fucked up really badly — thought she was someone else, file mix up, something like that. But god, that’s absolutey terrible.

  • WHOA, what the HELL?!

  • Man I would be getting a lawyer right now!!

  • so i read the article, and all i have to say is “what?”.  seriously, i think ms. mejia could come to terms with the fact that she is an amputee if the hospital would just explain the procedures and reasoning they had, but since they won’t explain that to anyone, without legal measures, it draws out their family’s pain even longer.  doesn’t she have a right to know exactly what was being done to her, and why?  i would expect that if i were to be in a life threatening situation.

  • Read the link. So strange. Didn’t they contact husband, etc? Article says he doesn’t know either. SO very strange. I am scared to go to hospital!

  • What the fuck?!

  • I wonder if that’s real.

  • Well, crap. Now I have to read the news.

    That is extreamly depressing.
    Poor woman.

  • … … that…  that is one of the worst things I’ve ever read….

I’ve got nothing sarcastic or snide to say at this… it’s just too bad.

  •  That is just horrible… The sad part is, no matter what happens, She will never get her arms & legs back. How can U put a price on that?

  • What the….Wow, and I’m due to give birth in 6 weeks.

  • You don’t “catch” strep.  You are “given” strep.  Usually by poor sanitary procedures.  Place needs a kick in the butt.

  • Pamilvr’s response was way the best.

I would think they’d have to have a pretty good reason to amputate all your limbs.  If they did, I figure they’d be more than willing to share it.

  • OMG, that is horrible. Can you imagine waking up from a surgery you dont know about to find all of your limbs gone?!

  • It’s got to be PRETTY fucking bad when everyone agrees on Theologian’s that something is fucked up.

We know she got the infection in the hospital. They told her the why but they never explained the how. Usually, when you come in the hospital you know how shit happened (crashed the car, ate some bad food, shot).

Sue them not for their money, but for the information. That’s all I’d want in this case.

  • I wondered if there was a mixup too when I read this. Why on earth would a birthing mother be on a ward with a person who had a Strep A infection? That doesn’t even make sense. Man, sure glad you guys down there pay for your health care. I’d hate to see what would happen to people if they didn’t!

  • That has got to be a complete and total violation of medical rights and patient confidentiality…. sue the pants off them!

  • OMG!!! Sue their asses off!!

  • What the hell?!

  • This is such a violation of everything..

  • Did you hear about the lady in Kansas City who was pulled over by cops when she was rushing to the hospital? She was 3 months pregnant and was having complications. They took her to the jail, even though she told them she was having baby problems (they have it on the cop car video). She stayed at the jail for twelve hours with no medical assistance. They kept giving her new pairs of pants because of all the bleeding. She lost the baby.

  • You know what sucks? She can only get $500,000 according to a FL law that was passed a year or two ago. So she won’t even be able to pay for healthcare and for childcare. Its absurd.

  • “She wears her wedding ring on a chain around her neck.” Aww!

    BIG LAWSUIT!! HUGE!

I feel so bad for her. and from the pictures, she looks like a gorgeous lady. I want to give her a hug and tell her it will all be ok.

  • How can they not tell her?  This is just… weird.

  • I can’t even begin to imagine what that woman is going through. Somebody screwed up big time, otherwise why wouldn’t they tell her what happened. She has every right to know, HIPPA or not, and she shouldn’t have to sue them to get an explanation. Of course I think she should sue and take them for everything and put the doctors and anyone else involved out of practice. Absolutely unbelievable!!

  • I saw this article a few days ago…it made me almost feel sick, it’s so terrible.

  • Holy crap!! That’s frightening!

  • Wow, Dan cant you have less depressing things to inform us of….

  • Doctors have their heads up their ass.

  • that’s awful. how can they just cut off her limbs and not tell her what really happened? i wouldn’t have waited eight and a half months to sue the hospital.

  • That’s strange. Doesn’t someone have to sign for permission  before having surgery done? Suspicious.

  • WTF?

  • Sensationalism and exploitation at it’s best.

The medical side is straight forward (and of course tragic for the patient and family)…  These fairly rare but well known infections, AKA ‘flesh eating bacteria”, unfortunately do essentially necroses human tissue (Toxic Shock Syndrome), and the only way one would have survived would be to emergently amputate the infected areas.  Sometimes it’s these multiple amputations or death.

Think about it… it’s one side of the story told through an entity in business dependent on viewership (the TV program).  Come on.  Moreover, per the article, they didn’t even say “sue us!”, they said “legal resolution”… only a judge could decide which law (Federal patient confidentiality laws - regarding the index case of her strep infection) VERSES the FLA law regarding patient’s rights to records.

It does bring up the important matters of the overuse of antimicrobials, increasing resistance in the microscopic world to our armamentarium because we treat colds with amoxicillin, and the dangers of healthcare acquired infections.

  • wtf? this world is messed up.

  • What ever happened to the Hippocratic Oath–first do no harm??

  • omg… i can’t imagine what i would have done. that poor woman!

  • That is so weird.

Why wont they tell her? Yeesh.

  • what? she went to deliver her baby and they just cut her arms and legs off for no reason? That’s so strange

  • give us updates!!

  • That’s awful.  She has a right to know how she got the flesh-eating bacteria, because those things don’t just spontaneously generate.  In a hospital you’d think they’d be more careful to contain patients who had them. It just seems really fishy because in addition to having to be exposed to the bacteria in the first place, you have to have some kind of open wound (can be very small though)…did she really have such a cut on every single one of her limbs?  Seriously.

  • I feel so sorry for her…she deserves an explanation at LEAST.

  • Sue sue sue sue sue sue sue sue sue sue and bleed that hospital dry !

  • that makes me not want to  get pregnant….. shit
and the doctors are supposed to tell you when you get ur limbs cut off …
