  • Bathrooms

Let me give you a hypothetical.  Imagine you were fixing the sinks in two separate bathrooms at one time.  Imagine there were three guys fixing the one restroom with no instructions.  Imagine there were two women fixing the other bathroom and following the instructions.

Who would you suspect finish their bathroom first?

  • Geez, women of course!

  • How come the time on my comment is BEFORE the time on the post?

  • Based solely on the information you gave, I’d say the women.  But that’s NOT taking into consideration the circumstances of…have any of these people fixed a sink before?  Age, experience, etc.

  • the women of course lol

  • of course the women..they have instructions..and they’re only short a person.now let’s say..the men could build it with light..and the women had to build it in the dark.that might give the men a chance..

  • Do any of them have a background in plumbing?

  • Who has built a sink before?

    Otherwise, probably women.

  • Would you be mentioning this if the guys hadn’t finished first?

  • Though, upon thinking about it again, the women could be over analytical and meticulous. Meh.

  • I think the men might finish first, but it wouldn’t be correct and then the bathroom would flood.

  • It totally depends on the men and the women in question.  :Þ

  • The women. But the men would have a heck of a lot more fun doing it.

  • the women, duh, unless the men messed up the water/electrical and there was no proceding in either project by either party!  (and i added electrical because well, it would happen!)

  • it depends on whether or not the guys know how to fix the sink.

If all things were equal (as in they are all equally experienced), I would say the women, but then again like democraticbean said I can see fights breaking out.

  • I think the men might finish first, but it wouldn’t be correct and then the bathroom would flood.

    i totally agree!

  • It depends on the circumstances, but I’m leaning towards the women finishing first.

  • based soley on the information given, probably the women, but are these two “i dont want to break a nail” women or two “lets get our hands dirty” women? that would affect the outcome of the problem.

  • The women following the instructions. Not because they’re women, but because they’re following the instructions. I expect the men not following the instructions would blow it up, not because they’re men but because they’re not following the instructions. I wouldn’t finish, because I wouldn’t have a clue where to start.

  • the men would finish faster, but the women would finish correctly.

  • The guys, but it would be wrong and have to be done over anyway because they didn’t follow instructions.

  • the women, because the men would have to try it all 7 times. one for each man’s original idea (3), one for each man’s revised idea (3) then finally giving into the instructions OR just not having a sink at all.

  • We really do need more info, Dan. :P

  • a sink is not that complicated…a few pipes here, a knob there, and a bowl hopefully under the faucet….the guys obviously would win because the women would be reading directions that just aren’t necessary.

  • Depends on experience (for the men) vs. instruction-reading skills (for the women).

Example: when I was growing up, my mother was lousy at reading instructions. She doesn’t have the patience for them. So she’d throw them aside and start tinkering with whatever new thing we had. On the other hand, she had loads of experience with all sorts of things, being a plumber’s daughter.

So, whenever something in our house needed to be installed, if it was something old and classic, my mother usually knew how to do it. If it was something new, like a DVD player, I would be better at it, because I’m a good instruction-reader.

This only becomes a gender issue if your hypothetical situation is equal in actual skill and experience.

  • The women. Instructions are very helpful.

  • Probably the men. They ether have done it before or been with someone who did. Besides I have read those direction. They suck.

  • But if all things really were equal, the woman would do better

  • Probably the men. Just because women spend lots of time talking and laughing and all that fun stuff.
However, if it was a competition, I would bet on the Women. They love showing men up…

  • Depends on how fuckable the women are.

  • I’d have to go with the women, unless the men have experience and the women don’t or other such situations.

  • The men would finish first, but who said it would be done correctly?

  • MEN!!! but they’d screw it up ^.^

  • Finished according to who’s definition?

  • women, they’d call a plumber

  • “I think the men might finish first, but it wouldn’t be correct and then the bathroom would flood.” – yo_quiero_javsie
I agree. This is assuming the men have a little more experience though, since typically, TYPICALLY, men are the ones that tinker around with appliances in the home. (Don’t yell at me if you’re a girl and you fix things, you may be atypical, okay?)

  • Are we talking about doing it right and even passing a plumbing inspection and all?  The women, duh. They followed the directions.

  • The women with the instructions, of course!

  • They would finish at the same time.

I figure that the time women would waste by reading the instructions and talking about shopping would be matched by the time men use for drinking beer and telling crude jokes.

  • Women of course! =P

Why do I feel this isn’t a hypothetical but something that’s actually happening at the moment? LOL

  • I could do it myself before anything… other people just get in the way… (I am not a control freak!)

  • Unless there was a spider under the sink, then it is the men hands down.

  • The Guys since the women with instructions are high maintenance and have to follow everything by the letter. That take time, lot of it. Think of women that take forever putting makeup on their faces. The guys didnt need one because they knew what they were doing in the first place.

  • lmao that pretty sad if you really have to ask that.  women of course.

  • One woman with instructions versus one man without instructions: The woman would win.

However, two women will end up talking about something else and waste time. Men will have to stay on topic or seem lesser. They all want to one-up the others.

    My vote, men.

  • probably the women. though maybe, since men are instinctly competitive.. they’d actually would finish first, but you probably would not want to use it.

  • please. the women. they’d call the plumber before the men.

  • ha ha the ladys i mean come on lol

  • maybe the men.

but they probably wouldn’t install it correctly and then they’d have to do it again.

    muahahahahaha.

  • do either of the groups have any previous experience?

  • If neither group has ever done anything of that sort before the girls would probably finish before though the guys would think that they were done first even though it didn’t work.

If both groups had done that installation prior to this instance then it probably would be the guys and it would work only it would have a few left over screws that they would promptly throw away.

  • They would finish at the same time. Posted 4/30/2007 10:09 PM by funny_guydude

    That’s what she said.

  • Silly dan, three women wouldn’t be in the bathroom fixing sinks; the three women would be in the kitchen, making their husbands a brown bag lunch!

    (hit below the belt)

  • probably men just b/c theyre more handy and would probably have some sort of experience

  • Just depends on the guys really. What if the directions don’t cover something that the women are dealing with because the house is over 100 years old?

  • Actually I need to change my answer. The guys would because they’re the ones with the tools! Women don’t have propane torches and solder!

  • …Umm…I’m going to say the women, but that’s assuming that neither of the genders have a plumber or something in the group.

  • (1/3)^-1 > (1/2)^-1 assuming all finish in an hour

  • The women, duh.

  • the ones with actual experience would finish first. if you have experience, you wouldn’t need to follow instructions.

  • Probably the men, because there is no way that the men would let the woman use their tools.

  • Well, the women might mess something up, despite reading the instructions causing a burst pipe. Of course then the women, wearing white t-shirts and cotton white panties would play in the stream of water. One woman would get mad at another and there’d be a fight, the third woman would break it up, everyone would kiss and make up.

(The third woman was a UPS driver who happened to see the fight happening because the bathroom is by the side door, she was delivering sex toys, which everyone later enjoy’d)

  • The men would probably get it done first, but the women would get it done right.

  • 69th comment^^ lol

  • Depends were we already given time to check our faces in the mirror?

  • who cares about who finishes first?!  the people following the directions would get it done correctly, and correct is more important that first.  (people who comment on xanga should take this advice…)

  • The women, duh.

  • the men would finish first, but the women would do it right

  • how big is the bathroom?

  • The women…the guys would be too busy getting drunk to give a damm.

  • The women!! Cuz they don’t have to fight who is right or brag or discuss over 30 min per man to get the job done.. The men have to get puffed chest to boast who can do the job first and better.. End up who doing what?? They probably be so mad and get drunk before the bathroom is even done!!

  • Instructions are NOT user friendly but the women would get done first anyway.

  • the women

  • How tall are the men?  How tall are the women?  What kind of women are they?  I mean . . . we really DO need more info!

  • The guys. Fixing the sink is not that difficult a task. And it would require a) knowing the names of the tools, and where they are

    b) enough strength to use the tools on the sink

    c) If the guys don’t get it done before some sports game is on, then it is “fixed” regardless of its condition.

Also, small grammar check. You repair a sink. To “fix” something is technically to pin it in place so that it does not move.

  • I think I’d need more info (such as experience level, what tools they have, etc), but if I were to make a guess on those facts, I’d say the women.

ryc: That’s cool, I made the comment on a pic of yours from a little while back. You get so many comments it probably got lost in the swarm. I forgot that you asked the question already .

  • They’d probably finish about the same time.  Some guys are very handy with all fix-it jobs.  Get a bunch of metro-guys together, though, and the girls will definately finish first!

  • depends, is the man me and the woman my wife? even with instructions she wouldn’t know a flange nut without a picture….which is what they do now, they just give you pictures of everything….even then….it’s a crap shoot….i say i finish first if the other two guys will go get the beer….

  • The guys would probably dick around (excuse the pun) more than the women. Women can gossip *and* do manual labor at the same time. The guys would probably be popping a few beers back, and the women would just be bitching and moaning about the men.

    You know it’s true.

  • Hey, I’ve been in that situation!

    The guys.

  • That depends… who has the background in plumbing? And is this so simple that following the directions will be the easy way to fix it, or will it require a little more knowledge? And how many times have the guys stopped for a beer break so far?

  • The girls. Good instructions make everything go easier.
Not all men are handy either. My husband isnt.

  • i would say the women….

  • I think the men might finish first, but it wouldn’t be correct and then the bathroom would flood.

That’s so perfect. :)   I think alot of people have hit it on the head, the men may get done first, INITIALLY but they will have extra parts… and it won’t work properly. So they’ll have to take the time to re-do it or fix it.

The women may take a bit longer, but it will be done exactly to the letter of the instructions – and the first time will be the only time it will need to be done.

  • I think the men might finish first, but it wouldn’t be correct and then the bathroom would flood.

  • it depends, has the guy ever done it before? If none of them have ever done it then the women will finish first because they are following the directions. Thinking that because one is male or female makes them faster or just naturally better at some things is wrong and a sterotype (sometimes true, but not always).

    Daniel (doubledb)

  • The men would probably finish first, because the likelihood of at least one of them knowing what they were doing with plumbing (or something close to the problem at hand) is vastly higher than the women’s likelihood of knowing what they’re doing. Plus, there’s all the more basic knowledge; the men have a much greater probability (again with the probability) to know what they’re doing with their tools. Put another way, the women may not even be familiar with how to follow the instructions, while the men (almost certainly) are.

Plus, ‘fixing the sink’ doesn’t sound like a really tricky proposition. I’m not sure what kind of issue would be so complex as to give significant advantage to someone with instructions; seems like whatever the issue is ought to be fairly obvious.

    -(—-

  • This is just another loaded question with no “theology” in it at all.  Much like the Paris Hilton question posted before.

  • that many guys will likely argue with each other, but two women don’t necessarily get along. thus if the women have guidance, and the man don’t (not assuming that women don’t know anything about plumbing — an ignorant and arrogant assumption, at best, and certainly sexist) then I think with the instructions to guide them and keep them on track, the women will finish first. If only because there’s fewer of them to argue.

  • Well….tough call. I guess the women because they have the instructions. And based on all else being equal, that would be the deciding factor.

  • I would say if each had equal sink-fixing experience, the women would

  • All the men I know who have had the instructions…NEVER look at them anyway! They usually are more adept at anything to do with tools though. Since most men don’t use instructions…they usually put some part on backwards, or don’t put it on at all. Based on all of this….I say the women would finish first.

  • THE WOMEN, OF COURSE!!!
    -KRISTIN

  • I think it depends if the guys are experienced or not.

If the men have experience, it woudl probably be them, but based on the facts you provided. It would be the women.

  • I may just have had a bad sample of women in my experience, but the women who I have seen try and follow instructions generally take a very long time to do so…
Although, I cannot assume that the men have any intuition fixing the bathroom’s either, so I would have to say the women.

  • i’d imagine the people with instructions would finish first, reguardless of gender.
this is, of course, assuming the people on the other bathroom don’t ALREADY know exactly what they’re doing… and assuming the people with instructions aren’t idiots.

  • The women with intructions, instructions is the key.

  • Guys are more mechanically minded, so probably them.

  • The women. Durr.

  • OMG!!! the girls of course!!

  • definitely the men, but the sink would fall apart again in three days because they would not have been trying to fix the sink… they would have been trying to do something faster than a couple of girls…

  • It would depend on the people.

But yeah, um. The woman has instructions.

  • what a sexist comment. the women of course though.

  • The women! And my reason for saying that is I was once married to a carpenter who liked to ghetto rig his own house. The summer I moved out I got tired of the bathroom pipes being duct taped together and I repaired them.

  • I’d say the women.  they have the instructions.  Plus, the men are probably in the other bathroom talking about all the bathrooms they have fixed before and how they think it should be done.

  • Well actually there is only one woman.

I mean, who is going to make the strawberry daqueris?

  • …The women.  But I don’t really think it matters what gender these people are.  If the men were following the instructions instead of the women, they would probably get it done faster.  This is assuming that none of the people have experience with fixing sinks.  :/

  • Has anyone considered the severity of the problem? Some may say “oh, the women because they were following directions”. This response seems to be coming from people who seem to not have a lot of experience fixing things, becasue they are answering with the assumption that whats wrong is a complex problem.

A sink is a very bad example, as there are very few potentially complex problems that can occur with one. Now, I am not saying the sinks cannot have complex problems, only that it is unlikely. For instance, a common problem is leaky pipes. Without looking at directions I can say with COMPLETE confidence that somewhere between the drain of the sink and the pipe connection to the main line, there is a place where water is getting out. The next step is to find out where. If that place is a faulty pipe, replace the pipe (which anyone can do — without directions, its quite self-explanatory). If Its a faulty joint, replace the joint; again, not too hard to figure out. Area in between? Either replace the part in question, apply a strong sealant, or get a new sink.

This is just a short argument for the men, I mean, the ones without directions. I could say a lot of things, but I would have to agree with respectably_stranded and say that there are just WAY TOO MANY VARIABLES in this equation. Are these two women who have owned their own plumbing business for fifteen years vs. three men who have spent their entire line in the fashion industry? Did the person who wrote the directions pass technical writing (in college) with an A or a D-? Maybe the guys didnt follow directions in the first place because the solution was ‘pour drain-o down the sink’ — thats the direction in itself.

By responding with a definite answer to this question, Im pretty sure that a person would be subtly projecting their perception of the differences in the sexes. Thats really my opinion though, I could be brilliantly wrong.

  • This is a pretty sexist question.
Assuming they all have the same experience, the women would probably finish first. Because they have instructions.

  • It COULD be the women, as long as I was not involved.  I’m more than a little mechanically deficient.

  • Depends. ;D Are the men sitting their drinking booze or are the woman fixing their nails/hair/cloths/make up. jk

  • women. i could fix a sink right now, without instructions, and my dad would just break it. he wouldn’t look at instructions if he had them

  • Who knew what they were doing? They finish first.

  • If the dudes are into plumbing alot, then they don’t need instructions
Likewise, if they’ve never even seen a tube before, they will never finish.
It depends on if the dudes are ‘stereotypical’ dudes.

  • the women haha, men always think they dont’ need directions, my dad tries fixing stuff without directions all the time and 6 our of 10 times, it isn’t put together or fixed properly. Follow the directions. lol

  • lol i’ll pick women
