  • Facebook

Benjimon76 sent me this youtube link.  The video is so funny.  Here is the link:  Link

I have noticed that Facebook has taken off in popularity.

What do you think is the reason Facebook has been so popular?

  • Maybe because people were getting sick of MySpace?

  • People posting deep intellectual stuff about Paris Hilton’s boob-job.

  • I personally find MySpace easier to manage :)

  • I think its layout and design is very simple and easy to use. And its popularity leads to more popularity… it’s based on on social networking, and the more people that use it, the more people will join, and so forth. It feeds itself.

  • simplicity and community

  • facebook is more clean cut and more “professional” in a way … that is till they invited highschoolers. and the skit is HILARIOUS!

  • people turn to facebook more because it’s fun seeing people you haven’t seen in ages pop up via’s friend’s friend’s friend’s friends. Networking does it. Plus, unlimited picture updates.

  • gosh this video obviously :P

  • the constant updates of peoples lives. i’m addicted.

  • hah, thats pretty funny. ive personally never used facebook. so i dont know.

  • It’s a simple, clean layout. And it’s a really easy way for people from different schools and such to keep in touch. Plus it doesn’t have bugs like Myspace does.

  • all my college friends use it. none of them are on xanga or myspace anymore. people go where their friends are.

  • The video is funny. Probably because I am not on it, :(

  • I miss the days when it was just a college thing.

  • I was expecting something more original.

  • Very easy to connect with friends.

  • it’s easy to use. you can keep up with friends easily, and ‘stalk’ them, so to speak, with status updates, and updates telling you what events they’re going to attend. for every friend I have on facebook, I’ve found out that they’re friends with people I know. I like that I can keep up with everyone, without it being public, and that there isn’t an obligation to DO anything on there. no competition for who has the most friends.

  • Because it’s a simple way to keep in touch with people, and share pictures with everyone.

  • Backlash of the VT shootings? I don’t know. I just know that Facebook was talked a lot in the media after the shootings.

  • i like facebook because it’s easy to keep up with your friends and discover new friends in your area.  granted their news feed feature does make it easy to stalk people a little, but it only shows what the person wants to let others see, so it’s okay.  also, the photo albums, notes, posted items, and groups are really well organized…and the site has a really clean design.

  • I like Facebook. It helps me keep up with all of my school friends.

  • the pictures.
    it’s private.
    it’s not smutty.
there are no annoying pop up ads.
    it’s organized.
    its bandwidth doesn’t get clogged.
your page looks just like everyone else’s (streamline).
no annoying music like myspace and xanga.
    searchable.
    the discussions in the groups.
    everyone has it.
you can customize the hell out of it.
    etc
    etc
    etc

there’s no reason NOT to have fb.

  • I was happy with it being college exclusive. Everyone in college had one and everyone checked it. Its a great way to pass info on. And its simple, no fancy HTML.

I was really upset when they opened it up to everyone.

  • It started off as a popular site among college students before it was open to the general population. I think people like FB better because there is less of a chance that you will run into any weirdos or pervs that are so prevalent on MS.

  • I think it has something to do with the stalker factor. You can’t do anything on there without updating all your friends what you did. People are nosy… they like knowing what everyone else is doing.

  • It has great privacy settings, is clean and professional looking, and is very well organized with photos and news updates and such.

  • It’s sort of like a giant, digital high school year book that never ends. In that sense, as a networking tool, it fills a gap in the market. I don’t really think that it’s geared towards blogging though. It more so transforms people into sort of like what trading cards are to sports, pictures and a basic bio with little deeper meaning. That’s what appeals to a big segment of the population though. Facebook is sort of like a rolodex while Xanga is a notebook. Personally, I like Xanga better; it’s a more versatile format.

  • That video is extremely annoying. As far as facebook goes, I joined simply because a friend of mine told my it was awesome. I never could get into Myspace.

  • Can I be your stalker?

  • i can actually find friends from my schools & i guess it doesn’t really encourage you to add people you don’t even know.

  • =========
that video is hilarious… but also scary if you think about it..

i’m sure if people were dedicated enough, they could probably track their “prey”‘s every move..

its popular cuz it rocks.. it lets ppl get into touch w/ old friends/acquaintances through school networks.. so it one-ups other social networks in that sense..

    =========

  • facebook is the best layout and easy to use spread that i have come across to-date. i think the best part of the site is that you can keep updated on all of your friends even though they may go across the country to another college than you are

  • the delusion that somehow its “safer” than myspace and your pirate photos won’t be misconstrued in the future!

  • I suppose it’s because it seems professional but at the same time a little quirky. You can poke and send each other funny gifts, but everything is clean cut… you don’t get flashing, blaring sites like you get on Myspace or on… yes, I’m saying it, Xanga. (But before everyone throw eggs at me, I’ll tell you I prefer Xanga to FB any day.) Plus everyone’s names are actually their names (well, usually) which makes it easier to remember people and more personal but unfortunately also much more stalker-y, as the hilarious video suggests.

  • it’s more user-friendly :)

  • Because it’s fun! There’s not html schmutz so you don’t get crazy whacked-out pages covered in crap like on myspace, and people’s names are ACTUALLY their names so it’s easier to find them, the privacy settings are good, the status feature is nice (The “[your named] is …” box where you can fill in the blank), unlimited picture updates, finding out that a friend of a friend knows your friend from when you were 3 and then friending that friend and asking how they’ve been for the last decade or so….

    It’s earned its popularity.

  • Because it’s not myspace.

  • Don’t know don’t care… But that video was scary because although they were skitting I bet there are really people out there that are sick like that!!

But I still like online comunities.. It would be nice however if there was a way to verify identities before  profiles were clicked or something. Then you’d know you arent talking to a 60 year old man if you are some young college coed and vice versa.

  • -shrugs-
    I don’t like it.

  • FaceBook IS very easy to use, and is more practical as a social network… events are easier to use and more integrated into the main-page… it’s more private, I find (though I’m not really concerned about extreme privacy), and it doesn’t have the whole stigma of being MySpace.. there is that whole “MySpace sucks!” thing going around right now, but no one seems to talk badly of FaceBook, except those who claim people get “addicted” to it, which is the same thing they said about MySpace.

  • I don’t know… I always thought it was stupid! lol

  • First Myspace.com was evil, now this one?  But I like the idea of when I’m 40 she will be 34, actually I like when I’m 43 she will be 23!  Score

  • I personally think it’s a better site than MySpace overall. I’ve been on it for a while and I’m not overly surprised that it’s growing…

  • Cuz it’s awesome. Unlike MySpace.
Also, it’s not littered with ads.

  • It’s simple.

  • i have found a lot of my old friends through facebook. some i have not seen in 10 years, and never thought i would hear from them again.

  • I think facebook is popular because it plays into people’s desire to be nosey, and other people’s need for attention

  • it is more private, there are a lot more people on there, it’s easier to use. (sort of)

  • b/c you can stalk people so easily

  • unlimited picture and movie uploads…plus, you find people you knew back in kindergarten that moved to Azerbaijan and suddenly re-appear on your site with a “hi, how are ya!”

  • Facebook is convenient for tracking down old friends and classmates and staying in touch.

Xanga is still superior in design if not in popularity, because unlike MySpace or FaceBook it is content-driven. The others only have blogs as peripherals. With Xanga, the purpose is the blog.

  • “stalking

    HAHA … yeah pretty much

    I love my xanga more

  • I recently joined because a friend invited me, but I have never used it. I think it’s boring.

  • i like facebook because it seems more organized than all those other sites…

  • it’s very easy to share pictures and you can receive notices of new updates/pictures/comments without having to go searching for them…

  • Better than a Buttbook.

  • ha ha ha, that video was hilarious

it was because it was only for college..
but now highschoolers can get it too

    Daniel (doubledb)

  • b/c it allows you to connec to all your friends on diff. networks. kind of divides them up i suppose

  • maybe it seems more popular now b/c it’s become public and EVERYONE has access to an account now, versus in the past when it was open only to those w/i a school network…so it’s the easiest way to keep in contact with everyone once they go off into the world post-college (or post-high school)…now that anyone has access to it and they keep on making changes to FB, it’s becoming more and more like myspace…but i still feel like it’s more secure and organized, as well as easier to control as far as your purposes in using it.

  • that video is creepy >_>
but facebook is more like myspace for college kids. i see people in college abandon their myspace completely for facebook; kids in high school or people wayyy past college just don’t get it.

  • Facebook is more private than myspace. On facebook the default is for only people your network to be able to see your profile and you can restrict that down to the point where only select friends can see your full profile. Plus you can block people so that they cannot even see that you are on facebook.

  • That video was quite amusing. I loved the look of love on the one fellow’s face (which goes along with the first time “Facebook stalker” comes up).

I have a Facebook, but it’s not as nice as Xanga. I have one mostly for the novelty and to keep up with what’s going on with my teenage friends and children. Facebook has the best “rings” though: Hello, I’m Harry Potter. You killed my parents, prepare to die; Let’s blow up NJ and get PA a beach; No, I’ve not read that particular literary classic–but I’ve seen the Wishbone; and my personal favorite, AP English Language with Mrs. Sellers defined my childhood.

Why is it so popular? Perhaps because it is so easy to search and there is little commitment involved with it. It shows you everything that each friend has done and you don’t need to do anything except log on. It’s also to search since most people use their real names and can be found listed by high school, college, or town. Handy for those Facebook stalkers.

  • Facebook is popular because of the security and popularity of Facebook’s servers. Since they put so much effort into tailored privacy controls, people can open themselves up to people they might know while blocking out unknown people. MySpace requires either a block all or tell all, while a Facebook profile can have different levels of privacy depending on which data the owner feels like sharing.

Facebook offers unlimited picture storage and blog-like capabilities. It is completely free and efficiently written from a programing sense. Xanga is generally efficient and MySpace is free, but neither quite get the other’s qualities. To be fair, Xanga has some excellent privacy controls in place, but there is little verification of identity. But part of Facebook’s popularity is completely circular.

It is popular. If I want to say hi to that guy who helped me on my Physics homework, he’s almost certainly on Facebook. New people get Facebook profiles so that they can have that ease of contact along with the security associated with Facebook. So Facebook is popular because Facebook is popular.

  • Yep. Facebook got a lot of facetime during the VT media blitz.

  • It has a more mature appeal to it compared to myspace.

  • because it’s pretty!

  • because there aren’t idiots around every corner.

and it’s layout is so simple, it’s almost complicated.

  • It’s amazing…. I love facebook. The layout is amazing; there aren’t too many ads; the creators just knew what they were doing. It reminds me of google.

  • Facebook is easy to setup, maintain, and the layout is simple to follow. Plus its fun to look up people at your college and friends at other colleges. Yah I wish it was just for college students… more personal

  • college kids use it. my daughter has one and most of her friends do too, along with myspace.

  • Because it doesn’t have a ‘reputation’ like myspace does.

  • I just seems so much cleaner

  • Oh, how I love the Facebook skit.

    I reiterate what on_bleecker_street said.

  • its organized

  • Myspace is old and facebook is more appealing visually, as well as easier to use.

  • penn masala are greattttttt!

and facebook is just safer. plus, no annoying pop-ups. no 60 yr olds tht leave you comments. facebook is just MAD RAD.

  • simple layout…good way of knowing and connecting with people from school and college

  • Why facebook and not myspace?

    Those match.com ads offend me.

    Facebook is bling free.

    Plain and simple.

    Keep it simple.

  • Dan, if you like this video you should check this one out too!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSnXE2791yg

    The Facebook Song.lol

    Livin’ free,
    Heath

  • It’s just very organized and whatnot. And it’s not totally obstuctive of my xanga-ing because I can import notes from xanga to my facebook blog. So it all works out. Xanga’s still the best in my books though.

How I wish everyone would just use xanga.

  • I think people are just bored and Facebook is turning into another Myspace.  Just something to entertain the masses.  Poor masses…

  • I dont know. I have it & I dont like it as much.

  • i think it’s a way for college and highschool kids to keep in touch and see who’s attending what school and what they are doing

  • It might have a more exclusive feel than other networking sites, like myspace or friendster before that. Who knows, people like to socialize, especially those college brats : ) (I’m an ex-college brat and have myspace, go figure).

  • I don’t know – but reading the comments have been interesting.

  • STALKER!

I have never heard of Facebook before now. o-o

  • I don’t know much about Face book.
But it has to be better than My Space

  • It appears to be for people who seek attention, but can never attain it. They’re very in your face, hence the website name.
This might apply to me alone though – it’s my network of ‘friends’ :)

  • OH MY GOD.

    …I’m actually in a group on Facebook…

“I don’t need to stalk you, Facebook does it for me!”

  • The poking. The only reason I do Facebook at all is because my friends do it more than Xanga. I still think Xanga is way better.

  • 1. It’s simple and clean
    2. The ads aren’t nearly as bad as Myspace’s
    3. It functions like MySpace, but still has a taste of the xanga we all know and love
    4. Did I mention you’re not allowed to edit the layout code? This forces a clean consistency
    5. I haven’t seen any spam in the year or so I’ve had one

  • …I don’t know.

    I use MySpace.

Facebook seems more..”clean cut”- but all the people I know who use it are in college..I’m not. My highschool friends are all on MySpace.

    SOOOOO!O!!!!! I use Myspace

  • haha I loved the video and they have a pretty good voice singing..great lyrics too..btw I’m on facebook..its kind of the same as myspace to kit with friends
