Your Friend and Your Xanga
It is interesting to me how many people on xanga are upset when friends from real life find their xanga site. Some people avoid linking their xanga site to facebook.
Do you care if your real life friends read your xanga site?

YES. Xanga is my place…I have Xanga friends on Facebook, but my IRL friends on Facebook are not allowed on my Xanga. I would feel I have to censor if I were to have IRL people here….

This is a big fear of mine. Xanga is my outlet, my diary….I would definitely not want someone that I know IRL reading my xanga.
I sorta worry about my doctor finding my Xanga stuff cause I know he closes the door and it’s all hush-hush what we talk about, and then I go write it all up in my blog anyways.

Yes… I feel I can be fully myself here. I dont have to fit into some box if I dont want to, nor have people bug me about stuff. I can just block them if they do, ha ha.. cant do that as easily with family or people from church. But it really wasn’t until I became a youth minister that I saw the benefit and perhaps necessity of having a place where I had some anonymity. When you are someone like a preacher or minister, there are a lot of expectation on you, some ok, but a lot are not… it is nice to have a place where I dont feel that weight nor worry something I said will be taken way out of proportion and bite me in the butt in real life, especially when applying for jobs and stuff can be found online.
For most people, Xanga is a place to bitch about those friends.
When I first got on xanga I wanted them to,I begged them too.I linked it to my Facebook when I got Facebook then came the crap from my family talking to people I didn’t even know and me being shy pretty much in real life that didn’t get it.I posted stuff mostly about my faith on my first xanga then as I met people and get to know them I loosened up and started being goofy like I can be in real life only here I could be goofy and not get looks like I need to grow up,it was fun here.I have come and gone from xanga over and over and its beeen mostly due to how certain family take me being on here.I finally settled on Goofy fishing for my profile pic because it describes me best.I’m goofy and I love to fish.I will still talk about my faith and I get too frustrated talking about politics here so I mostly keeep it to kidding around and trying to geta laugh out of people now….SURELY I can’t get into trouble doing that?

i don’t do fb and i don’t think my rl friends do either although i’ve never asked any of them. some might. i don’t know.
yes. back in the day, i came here because my friends were here. now they’re all gone and i’m left and I don’t tell anyone new about it.
I prefer they not. I’m a fairly private person..hence no more facebook. Like a lot of people said, this is my outlet to express myself without being condemned and judged on versus in real life you feel like you need to censor yourself a little..
I’d really rather not. I feel like I have to exude a certain image to most / all of my real-life friends whenever I can, and if they were allowed to peek inside the world that is my xanga, all of that would be for naught.
I blog anonymously. None of my real life friends know about this.
Oh yeah. Xanga is free from real life things. Which is why I am free to openly call my coworker “Clueless One” and have no fear of anyone finding out. I like the fact that I don’t have to censor myself or be nice when talking about people I don’t really like.
Xanga is my place and if you have a problem with it, you’ll just have to get over it. I blog, and I don’t blog in a way that is meant to be personal. I blog because I want to reach people. I prefer not to discuss it in person, because thats what comments are for, but people will just have to get over it.
I have some irl ppl that I wouldn’t want to see my xanga, and some xanga ppl I wouldn’t want irl. So I usually don’t mesh the two

Yes, simply because I tend to write about a lot of personal stuff and also it feels nice to know I can write what i want and not worry about any awkward conversations about my personal business. My xanga friends are a lot different than my normal facebook friends. If anything they’re more closer since they know the real me that i’m still afraid to show to the outside world.
My mom used to religiously read my xanga at breakfast and at night before going to bed. I saved up enough credits to change my username. She figured I just deleted my Xanga.
My best friend from High School is subscribed to me, though he doesn’t do Xanga. My family though, umm no.

I like the idea of someone knowing me so well, to have the priviledge of knowing my xanga linker.
One old good friend of mine has the link, but nobody else. Unfortunately we aren’t friends anymore but, I like knowing we can check up on eachother every now and again…
Xanga’s strongest trait is also what hurts it the most. Most of us post very personal stuff that we don’t wanna share with the people in our daily lives. Advertising the site by word of mouth is almost impossible. For most of us.
I actively want my real life friends to read my Xanga site, lmao!! I hate Facebook with a passion, but because all my old friends and colleagues back in England have Facebook pages (even though they all thought I’d lost the plot when I first started blogging and becoming connected with people I didn’t even “know” on Y360), I started a Facebook page expressly because when I moved from Y360 to Multiply.com, and now to here, I can cross-link my posts straight to Facebook so the guys back home can keep up with what I’m doing. I don’t use Facebook in itself very much – to me it’s like glorified texting – but my blogs are almost an online journal, so they can read at length (and I do tend to go on a bit) about my life here in America. I’d be GUTTED if my real life peeps didn;t read my blogs, lmao!!

Yes I’d care. I have a career that means a lot to me, and I’d close my Xanga before I’d put it at risk.
My friends and family know I blog on here now and then. They’ve never wanted to get on Xanga so it’s all good. Plus, if I wanna bitch about any of them, I will do it on Facebook where they can read it lol. I don’t care anyway and no one cares what I do.
I think this just a general problem that will always limit Xanga. It’s an online diary, albeit one shared with strangers. People generally don’t want to share that with everyone they know in real life. Facebook and twitter are vastly different–people want to interact with people they know in real life on those sites.

I feel more comfortable posting on Xanga because facebook is full of weird people I used to know. And they don’t say anything at all when I post. Alot of them are from high school 20 years ago and I don’t have anything to say to them. I don’t really know them anymore. My closest friends irl don’t use facebook or Xanga. Just play games and skype.

I used to. I used to hide behind aliases – on Xanga, and elsewhere. Then I decided that if I believe in something, I am willing to take a stand for it. My Xanga is linked to my FB. If my real life friends think less of me for it – then they were never real friends to begin with.
back in 2004 this was THE thing to have for high school kids, so back then i had most of my RL friends on here. now i don’t know a single person who still uses it. i wouldn’t care if my RL friends found my xanga again because the public view of my profile is old stuff pre 2010 most of it pre 2007….so it’s not like anything i wrote back then is going to have any effect on anyone. now i just use xanga as a private blog, and to write (mostly) shitty comments on other people’s posts.

Xanga in a way keeps me sane and writing savvy. It keeps my thoughts organized and my memories intact.
Although, I do tend to realize I have gaps and holes and I have to rely on friends to bring those memories back to me. I just feel insecure about my true feelings and I’m not so sure anyone on FB would really care other than my mother.

I don’t let anyone from my “real life” (with maybe two exceptions) see it, there’s nothing I’m trying to hide, but I choose not to share what’s going on in my head to people I know. It’s easier here because people may or may not read anything I have to say, and probably never think twice about it, but it’s okay. I don’t have any expectations that go along with writing about what I’m thinking or feeling on a nearly-anonymous blog. I would much rather keep to myself with regards to people I know, they don’t have any business knowing these things about me if I did not openly tell them.

Well anything you post online, you kind of have to assume that anyone can have access to it, unless you take special measures to ensure that it doesn’t happen, such as using privacy settings (friends lock etc.). If you don’t and just leave it open for everyone to read, then you don’t really have any right to get upset when specific people read your site.
I actually would be okay if someone from school read my beauty blog. It’s on the internet after all,anyone is bound to see it. Plus,that’s more views for you! Real life friends even tend to check out your blog more.
If it was a personal blog though,i wouldn’t really like it that much though. But hey,what can you do about it?

Like most of the other posters here I would prefer that my facebook friends just stay there and not wander over to Xanga. Xanga is my journal, where I write what I want not weird little snippets of nonsense. I have gone back over my old entries and really reflected about that time in my life. Never do that on facebook. Xanga is me.

Yes, because I write & complain about people in my real life on xanga. One friend found it and I was mortified to learn she read that I compared her and her boyfriend at the time to Miss Piggy & Kermit. Now that I know she reads it, I hardly mention her anymore. I once tried pseudonyms, but ended up confusing myself. I don’t know anyone who uses xanga anyway. Only like a two or three and they hardly write in it anymore.
Depends on who it is. Some of my real friends are subscribed to my xanga – they are never really on anymore, though.
